Vaishno Devi Puja Vidhi at Home

वैष्णो देवी पूजा विधि

Deity: Mata Vaishno DeviBest Day: Navratri, Fridays & Tuesdays, Ashtami

Mata Vaishno Devi, enshrined as three sacred pindis (Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati) in the Trikuta hills of Katra, is one of the most beloved forms of the Mother Goddess. While millions undertake the yatra to her Bhawan, her puja can be done at home with devotion — especially during Navratri. This is the complete step-by-step Vaishno Devi puja vidhi for the home altar.

Puja Samagri (Materials Required)

Mata Vaishno Devi photo or the three-pindi image
Red chunri (sacred cloth) and red flowers
Akhand Jyot — a ghee lamp kept continuously lit (in Navratri)
Kumkum, roli, akshata (rice) and mauli (sacred thread)
Coconut wrapped in red cloth (shrifal)
Silver/steel kalash with water, mango leaves
Incense, dhoop and camphor
Naivedya — sweets, fruit, halwa-puri and kheer
Red bangles, sindoor and a small mirror-comb (shringar) for the Mata
Sweets/Mishri and chana-halwa for kanya prasad

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Shuddhi (Purification)

Bathe and wear clean clothes (red or yellow are auspicious). Clean the altar and sprinkle Gangajal on the place and yourself. Face East or North.

2

Chowki & Sthapana

Spread a red cloth on a wooden chowki. Place the Vaishno Devi photo/pindis. During Navratri, also do Kalash (Ghat) sthapana with the coconut on top to invoke the Goddess.

3

Akhand Jyot

Light an akhand jyot (unbroken ghee lamp) — kept burning through the Navratri or puja period. Light incense and dhoop.

4

Avahana (Invocation)

With folded hands chant "Jai Mata Di" and invite the Mother — "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche" — offering akshata.

5

Shringar & Offerings

Offer the red chunri, sindoor, bangles, red flowers and kumkum to the Mata. Offer the coconut and naivedya (halwa, puri, kheer, fruit).

6

Path & Mantra

Recite the Vaishno Devi Chalisa and Durga Chalisa; during Navratri, read the Durga Saptashati / Durga Kavach. Chant the Navarna mantra 108 times.

7

Aarti

Light camphor and perform the Vaishno Devi Aarti — "Jai Vaishno Mata" — and the Durga Aarti "Ambe Tu Hai Jagdambe Kali." Rotate the lamp clockwise.

8

Kanya Pujan & Prasad

During Navratri Ashtami/Navami, worship young girls (Kanya/Kanjak) as forms of the Devi — wash their feet, feed halwa-puri-chana, and give gifts. Distribute prasad.

Important Tips

💡

Always begin and end with "Jai Mata Di" — the Mother responds to a heart full of faith more than to elaborate ritual.

💡

Keep the akhand jyot safe and continuously lit through Navratri; never let it go out — appoint someone to watch it.

💡

A yatra to the Bhawan at Katra (Trikuta hills) is the ultimate Vaishno Devi pilgrimage; many vow it after a wish is granted.

💡

Keep the puja and food strictly vegetarian (no onion-garlic) during Navratri; observe the fast with fruits and sabudana.
