Frequently Asked Questions

When is Maha Shivaratri 2026?
Maha Shivaratri falls on the 14th day of the dark half of Phalguna month (February-March). The exact date varies each year based on the Hindu lunar calendar.
How to observe Maha Shivaratri?
Fast the entire day (Nirjala or with fruits/milk). Visit a Shiva temple and perform Abhishekam (bathing the Lingam with milk, water, honey, curd, and ghee). Stay awake all night chanting Shiva mantras. Perform puja in four Prahars of the night. Break the fast next morning after the final puja.
Why stay awake on Shivaratri?
The legend says Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married on this night. Also, a hunter unknowingly stayed awake all night under a Bilva tree, and the leaves fell on a Shiva Lingam below. Lord Shiva was so pleased with this accidental worship that he granted the hunter salvation. Staying awake symbolizes spiritual vigilance.
