Deity: Lord GaneshaBest Day: Wednesday, Ganesh Chaturthi, Sankashti Chaturthi

Lord Ganesha is worshipped first before any Hindu ritual or new beginning. This is the complete step-by-step guide for performing Ganesh Puja at home — whether for daily worship, Ganesh Chaturthi, Sankashti Chaturthi, or before starting a new venture. Follow this vidhi (method) for an authentic and spiritually powerful Ganesh puja.

Red flowers and garland
Sindoor (vermillion)
Kumkum and haldi (turmeric)
Rice (akshata)
Coconut with husk
Betel leaves and betel nut (paan-supari)
Incense sticks and camphor
Ghee diya (lamp)
Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar)
Fruits — especially banana and guava

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Purification (Shuddhikaran)

Take a bath and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja area. Sprinkle Ganga Jal (holy water) on the altar and yourself. Face East or North during puja.

2

Kalash Sthapana

Place a small Kalash (water pot) filled with water, with mango leaves and a coconut on top. This represents the universe and invites divine energy.

3

Ganesh Sthapana

Place the Ganesh idol on a red cloth. Apply kumkum tilak on the idol's forehead. Offer a garland of red flowers.

4

Avahana (Invocation)

Chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" three times while offering akshata (rice grains) to invite Ganesha's presence into the idol.

5

Panchamrit Snan

Bathe the idol with Panchamrit — first milk, then curd, then honey, then ghee, then sugar water. Finally rinse with plain water.

6

Shringar (Decoration)

Dry the idol gently. Apply sindoor and kumkum. Offer fresh clothes (red cloth), durva grass on the head, and flowers at the feet.

7

Offerings (Naivedya)

Offer modak, ladoo, fruits, and coconut. Place 21 durva grass blades on Ganesha's head. Offer betel leaves and betel nut.

8

Mantra Japa

Chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" 108 times using a mala (rosary). Then recite the Ganesh Chalisa.

9

Aarti

Light the camphor and perform Ganesh Aarti — "Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva, Mata Jaki Parvati Pita Mahadeva." Rotate the aarti plate clockwise three times.

10

Prarthana & Visarjan

Fold your hands and pray for your specific wishes. If performing for Ganesh Chaturthi, do Visarjan (immersion) on the prescribed day. For daily puja, conclude with Shanti Mantra.

Important Tips

💡

Always start Ganesh puja before any other deity's puja — Ganesha is the "Vighnaharta" (remover of obstacles).

💡

Use fresh durva grass if possible — it is Ganesha's most beloved offering, even more than modak.

💡

The best time for Ganesh puja is during Madhyahna (midday, 12-1:30 PM) or Sandhya Kaal (dusk).

💡

Avoid Tulsi (holy basil) leaves in Ganesh puja — it is the one offering Ganesha does not accept.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction to face during Ganesh puja?
Face East or North during Ganesh puja. The Ganesh idol should face West (towards you) so that you face East while worshipping.
Can we do Ganesh puja daily at home?
Yes! Daily Ganesh puja is highly recommended. A simple daily puja takes just 10-15 minutes — offer a flower, light a diya, chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" 11 times, and do aarti.
Why are 21 durva grass blades offered to Ganesha?
Durva grass represents immortality as it regrows when cut. The number 21 represents the 5 organs of action, 5 organs of perception, 5 Pranas, 5 elements, and the soul. Offering 21 blades symbolizes offering your complete self to Ganesha.
