Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Purification & Time

Kali puja is best done at night (Nishita Kaal). Bathe, wear clean clothes, clean the altar and sprinkle Ganga Jal. Face North or East. Approach with a calm, fearless and devoted mind.

2

Invoke Ganesha

Begin with "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" to clear obstacles before invoking the fierce Mother.

3

Kali Sthapana

Place Maa Kali on a red/black cloth. Apply sindoor and kajal, and offer a garland of red hibiscus — her most beloved flower.

4

Light the Lamp & Dhoop

Light a mustard-oil or ghee lamp and dhoop before the Goddess. The lamp is central to the night worship of Kali.

5

Offerings (Naivedya)

Offer red hibiscus, raw rice, sweets and fruits. (Where a symbolic bali is traditional, a coconut is offered instead of any living thing.)

6

Mantra Japa

Chant the Kali Beej Mantra "Om Kreem Kalikayai Namah" 108 times, and "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche". Recite the Kali Chalisa and the Durga Kavach for protection.

7

Aarti & Prarthana

Perform the Kali Aarti with the lamp, rotating it clockwise. Pray to the Mother for protection from fear, enemies and negativity, and for courage. Conclude with "Jai Maa Kali".
