1

Purification

Bathe and wear clean clothes. Clean the altar and sprinkle Ganga Jal. Face East or North. Begin with a remembrance of Krishna, whose name Shyam bears.

Place Khatu Shyam Ji on a blue/yellow cloth. Apply chandan and kumkum tilak, place a peacock feather, and raise a small nishan (flag) beside him.

3

Itar & Shringar

Offer itar (perfume) — dear to Shyam Baba — chandan, and a garland of blue and white flowers. Adorn the deity lovingly.

4

Bhog (Naivedya)

Offer kheer-churma (Shyam Baba's beloved bhog), panchamrit and fruits, each with a tulsi leaf, since Shyam is Krishna.

5

Light the Lamp & Mantra

Light the ghee diya and incense. Chant "Om Shyam Devaya Namah" and "Hare ka Sahara Baba Shyam Hamara" 108 times, and recite the Khatu Shyam Chalisa.

6

Khatu Shyam Aarti

Perform the Khatu Shyam Aarti with camphor, rotating the lamp clockwise, singing "Om Jai Shri Shyam Hare".

7

Prarthana & Nishan

Pray to Shyam Baba for refuge and the fulfilment of wishes — he is the support of the helpless. Many vow a padyatra to Khatu carrying the nishan. Conclude with "Khatu Shyam Maharaj ki Jai" and distribute the churma prasad.
