Khatu Shyam Ji Puja Vidhi at Home
खाटू श्याम जी पूजा विधि
Khatu Shyam Ji — Shyam Baba — is the Kali Yuga form of Barbarika, blessed by Krishna with his own name and worshipped as the "Haare ka Sahara" (support of the defeated). This is the complete step-by-step guide for performing Khatu Shyam puja at home — for daily worship, Ekadashi, or during the Phalgun Mela. Follow this vidhi for the refuge and grace of Shyam Baba.
Puja Samagri (Materials Required)
Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi
Purification
Bathe and wear clean clothes. Clean the altar and sprinkle Ganga Jal. Face East or North. Begin with a remembrance of Krishna, whose name Shyam bears.
Shyam Sthapana
Place Khatu Shyam Ji on a blue/yellow cloth. Apply chandan and kumkum tilak, place a peacock feather, and raise a small nishan (flag) beside him.
Itar & Shringar
Offer itar (perfume) — dear to Shyam Baba — chandan, and a garland of blue and white flowers. Adorn the deity lovingly.
Bhog (Naivedya)
Offer kheer-churma (Shyam Baba's beloved bhog), panchamrit and fruits, each with a tulsi leaf, since Shyam is Krishna.
Light the Lamp & Mantra
Light the ghee diya and incense. Chant "Om Shyam Devaya Namah" and "Hare ka Sahara Baba Shyam Hamara" 108 times, and recite the Khatu Shyam Chalisa.
Khatu Shyam Aarti
Perform the Khatu Shyam Aarti with camphor, rotating the lamp clockwise, singing "Om Jai Shri Shyam Hare".
Prarthana & Nishan
Pray to Shyam Baba for refuge and the fulfilment of wishes — he is the support of the helpless. Many vow a padyatra to Khatu carrying the nishan. Conclude with "Khatu Shyam Maharaj ki Jai" and distribute the churma prasad.

Important Tips
Itar (perfume) and kheer-churma are especially dear to Shyam Baba — never skip them.
Offer blue and white flowers and a peacock feather — the colours and symbol of Shyam (Krishna).
Ekadashi and Shukla Dwadashi are Shyam Baba's days; the Phalgun Mela (Feb–March) at Khatu is the grandest occasion.
Since Shyam is Krishna, keep a Tulsi plant and offer a tulsi leaf on every bhog.
