Krishna Puja Vidhi at Home

श्रीकृष्ण पूजा विधि

Deity: Lord KrishnaBest Day: Janmashtami, Wednesdays, Ekadashi

Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, is worshipped as the playful Bal Gopal and the divine teacher of the Gita. This is the complete step-by-step guide for performing Krishna Puja at home — for daily worship, Janmashtami (his midnight birth), or Ekadashi. Follow this vidhi for the Lord's love, joy and grace.

Puja Samagri (Materials Required)

Krishna / Bal Gopal idol or photo
A small jhula (cradle) for Janmashtami
Yellow/peacock-coloured cloth
Tulsi leaves (essential)
Makhan-mishri (butter and sugar)
Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar)
Yellow flowers and garland (vaijayanti)
Peacock feather and a small flute
Kumkum, chandan, akshata
Incense, camphor and ghee diya
Fruits, kheer and panjiri

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Purification

Bathe and wear clean clothes (yellow is dear to Krishna). Clean the altar and sprinkle Ganga Jal. Face East or North.

2

Invoke Ganesha

Begin with "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" to remove obstacles before the puja.

3

Krishna Sthapana

Place Bal Gopal / Krishna on a yellow cloth. Apply chandan and kumkum tilak, place a peacock feather and a small flute beside him.

4

Panchamrit Abhishek

Bathe the idol with Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar) — especially on Janmashtami — then rinse with water and dry gently.

5

Shringar

Dress Krishna in fresh yellow clothes, offer the vaijayanti garland, and place a tulsi leaf on him. On Janmashtami, lay Bal Gopal in the decorated jhula (cradle).

6

Naivedya (Bhog)

Offer makhan-mishri (Krishna's favourite), kheer, panjiri and fruits — each with a tulsi leaf on top, for Krishna does not accept bhog without tulsi.

7

Mantra Japa

Chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" 108 times, and the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra in kirtan. Recite the Krishna Chalisa and Madhurashtakam.

8

Krishna Aarti

Perform the Krishna Aarti — "Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki" — with camphor, rotating the lamp clockwise. On Janmashtami this is done at midnight, his birth hour.

9

Jhulan & Prarthana

On Janmashtami, gently rock the cradle and sing lullabies to baby Krishna. Pray for love, joy and devotion, and distribute the makhan-mishri prasad.

Important Tips

💡

Tulsi is essential — Krishna accepts no bhog without a tulsi leaf on it. Keep a Tulsi plant at home.

💡

Makhan-mishri (butter and sugar) is Krishna's most beloved offering — never skip it.

💡

On Janmashtami, the main puja and aarti are at midnight (12 AM), Krishna's birth hour.

💡

Chant "Radhe Radhe" — the name of Radha is dearest to Krishna and pleases him most.
