Rudrabhishek Puja Vidhi

रुद्राभिषेक पूजा विधि

Deity: Lord Shiva (Rudra)Best Day: Monday, Pradosh, Shravan month & Maha Shivaratri

Rudrabhishek is the most powerful form of Shiva worship — the ceremonial abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the Shivling with sacred substances while chanting the Rudra mantras. It is believed to wash away sins, remove diseases and doshas, and grant health, peace and fulfilment of desires. This is the step-by-step Rudrabhishek vidhi you can perform at home, especially during the holy month of Shravan.

Puja Samagri (Materials Required)

Shivling (Parad, Narmadeshwar or metal)
Gangajal and clean water
Raw milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar (Panchamrit)
Coconut water and sugarcane juice (optional dravyas)
Bilva (Bael) leaves — 3-leafed clusters
Bhasma (sacred ash), chandan and white flowers
Dhatura, aak flowers and a few drops of attar
Ghee lamp, dhoop and camphor
A self-draining base/plate to channel the abhishek water
The Rudri / Rudrashtadhyayi text or Mahamrityunjaya mantra

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Sankalp & Purification

Bathe, wear clean clothes, and clean the puja space. Take a Sankalp (resolve) stating your purpose. Place the Shivling on a draining base facing North.

2

Ganesh & Kalash Puja

Worship Ganesha and establish a Kalash. Invoke Lord Shiva as Rudra into the Shivling with "Om Namah Shivaya" and offer akshata.

3

Jal & Panchamrit Abhishekam

Bathe the Shivling continuously — first Gangajal, then milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar (Panchamrit), then optional coconut water/sugarcane juice — chanting the Rudri (Namakam-Chamakam) or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra throughout.

4

Final Jal & Drying

Finish with a pure water rinse so the dravyas drain away (never let them collect). Gently wipe the Lingam.

5

Shringar (Decoration)

Apply bhasma and chandan in three lines, offer Bilva leaves on top of the Lingam, and place white flowers, dhatura and aak around the base.

6

Mantra Japa

Chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra 108 times for health and longevity, then "Om Namah Shivaya" and the Rudrashtakam.

7

Aarti & Prarthana

Light camphor and perform the Shiva Aarti "Om Jai Shiv Omkara." Distribute the abhishek jal (charanamrit) and bhasma as prasad, and pray with devotion.

Important Tips

💡

Shravan month (especially Mondays) and Maha Shivaratri are the most powerful times for Rudrabhishek; Pradosh Kaal is also ideal.

💡

If you cannot recite the Rudri (Namakam-Chamakam), simply chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra or "Om Namah Shivaya" continuously during the abhishekam — devotion matters most.

💡

A single Bilva leaf offered on the Shivling after abhishekam pleases Mahadev more than any costly offering.

💡

Choose the abhishek dravya for your goal — water for peace, milk for health and progeny, honey for wealth, ghee for strength, sugarcane juice for happiness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rudrabhishek and its benefits?
Rudrabhishek is the ritual bathing (abhishekam) of the Shivling with sacred substances while chanting Rudra mantras. It is believed to destroy sins and negative karma, cure illness, remove planetary doshas (especially Kaal Sarp and health afflictions), and grant peace, prosperity and fulfilment of wishes.
Which day is best for Rudrabhishek?
Mondays (Somvar), Pradosh days, the entire month of Shravan and Maha Shivaratri are the most auspicious for Rudrabhishek. Performing it during Pradosh Kaal (dusk) multiplies its power.
What is Rudrabhishek done with?
The Shivling is bathed with a series of dravyas — Gangajal, raw milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar (Panchamrit), and sometimes coconut water and sugarcane juice — followed by Bilva leaves and bhasma. Each substance is offered for a specific blessing while the Mahamrityunjaya or Rudri mantra is chanted.
