जगन्नाथ पूजा विधि

Deity: Lord Jagannath (with Balabhadra & Subhadra)Best Day: Rath Yatra, Ekadashi, Wednesday & Thursday

Lord Jagannath — the "Lord of the Universe" — is the most beloved form of Sri Krishna (Vishnu), worshipped at Puri with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. He is the deity of universal love who accepts everyone without distinction. This is the complete step-by-step Jagannath puja vidhi for the home altar, in the simple, joyful spirit of Puri.

Puja Samagri (Materials Required)

Images/idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra
Tulsi leaves and a tulsi garland
Yellow cloth and yellow/lotus flowers
Chandan (sandalwood), kumkum and akshata
Ghee lamp, incense and camphor
Naivedya — khichdi, rice, fruit and sweets (bhog)
Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar)
Betel leaves, betel nut and a coconut
Gangajal / clean water in a kalash

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Snan & Shuddhi

Bathe and wear clean clothes. Clean the altar, sprinkle Gangajal for purification, and sit facing East or North.

2

Sthapana

Place Jagannath in the centre with Balabhadra and Subhadra on a yellow cloth. Light the ghee lamp and incense.

3

Dhyana & Avahana

Meditate on the large-eyed Lord of Puri and invite him with "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" and "Jai Jagannath", offering akshata.

4

Shringar & Tulsi

Apply chandan and kumkum, offer tulsi leaves (dear to the Lord) and yellow flowers and a garland.

5

Bhog (Offering)

Offer the naivedya — khichdi, rice, fruit and sweets. At Puri, the Mahaprasad is cooked with devotion and shared by all; offer with that spirit of equality.

6

Naam Sankirtan

Chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra and "Jai Jagannath" with joy; recite the Krishna Chalisa or Achyutam Keshavam.

7

Aarti

Light camphor and perform the aarti — "Om Jai Jagdish Hare" — circling the flame clockwise. Distribute the bhog as Mahaprasad.

Important Tips

💡

Jagannath is the Lord of all — offer and share his Mahaprasad without any distinction of caste, creed or status.

💡

Tulsi is his dearest offering; place a tulsi leaf on every bhog before offering.

💡

The Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) in Ashadha is his greatest festival — when even those who cannot enter the temple receive his darshan on the streets.

💡

Keep the worship simple and full of love — "Jai Jagannath" sung from the heart is the highest puja.
