Griha Pravesh Puja Vidhi

गृह प्रवेश पूजा विधि

Deity: Ganesha, Lakshmi & Vastu PurushBest Day: An auspicious muhurat (Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha months; avoid Chaturmas)

Griha Pravesh is the sacred housewarming ceremony performed before entering a new home for the first time. It purifies the house, pacifies the Vastu Purush and the nine planets, and invites Lakshmi (prosperity) and Ganesha (auspicious beginnings) to reside there. This is the complete step-by-step Griha Pravesh puja vidhi — perform it on an auspicious muhurat for a happy, prosperous home.

Puja Samagri (Materials Required)

Ganesh & Lakshmi idols/photos
Kalash (copper/brass) with water, mango leaves & coconut
Navadhanya (nine grains) and haldi-kumkum
Fresh milk to boil (doodh) and rice for the kheer
Gangajal, raw turmeric, betel leaves & nuts
Red cloth, flowers, garland and rangoli colours
Hawan kund, samagri, ghee, mango wood & camphor
Navagraha samidha and a Vastu yantra (optional)
Diyas, incense, and sweets/fruits for naivedya
A coconut to break at the threshold

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Threshold & Rangoli

Decorate the main door with a toran (mango/marigold leaves), draw rangoli, and place a swastika and Shubh-Labh. Break a coconut at the threshold before first entry.

2

First Entry

The couple/owner enters first with the right foot, the lady carrying the Kalash filled with water and topped with a coconut. Enter chanting "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah."

3

Ganesh & Kalash Sthapana

In the North-East (Ishaan) corner or puja room, install Ganesha and the Kalash. Worship Ganesha first to remove all obstacles.

4

Navagraha & Vastu Shanti

Invoke the nine planets (Navagraha) and perform Vastu Shanti puja to pacify the Vastu Purush, seeking forgiveness for any flaw in the construction.

5

Boiling Milk (Doodh Ubaalna)

On the new stove, boil milk and let it overflow towards the East — the rising, overflowing milk symbolises abundance and prosperity entering the home. Make kheer/payasam from it as the first prasad.

6

Hawan

Perform a Havan with offerings of ghee and samagri while chanting the Gayatri Mantra and Navagraha mantras, purifying the home with sacred fire and smoke.

7

Lakshmi Puja & Aarti

Worship Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity, offer the kheer and sweets as naivedya, and perform the aarti. Many also read the Satyanarayan Katha on this day.

8

Bhojan (Feeding)

Feed Brahmins, elders, relatives and the needy. The first meal cooked and shared in the new home invites lasting happiness and plenty.

Important Tips

💡

Always enter the new home for the first time on an auspicious muhurat — consult a panchang; avoid Chaturmas (the four monsoon months) for Griha Pravesh.

💡

Do not leave the new house empty on the first night after Griha Pravesh — the family should sleep there.

💡

The milk-boiling-over (doodh ubaalna) ritual is essential; the overflow towards the East signifies growing prosperity.

💡

Keep the Kalash water and use it to sprinkle in every room and corner to purify the entire house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which day is best for Griha Pravesh?
Choose an auspicious muhurat from the panchang. The months of Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are considered favourable, while Chaturmas (Ashadha to Kartik, the four monsoon months) is generally avoided. Thursday, Friday and Monday are good weekdays.
How to do Griha Pravesh puja at home?
Decorate and purify the entrance, enter first with the Kalash and right foot, install and worship Ganesha and the Kalash, perform Navagraha and Vastu Shanti puja, boil milk on the new stove, do a Havan with the Gayatri Mantra, worship Lakshmi, and feed Brahmins and family. Reading the Satyanarayan Katha completes it.
What is the milk boiling ritual in Griha Pravesh?
On the new kitchen stove, fresh milk is boiled and allowed to rise and overflow (usually towards the East). The overflowing milk is a symbol of abundance and prosperity filling the home. The milk is then used to make kheer offered as the first prasad.
