Makar Sankranti is celebrated on 14 January 2026 (occasionally 15 January), the day the Sun enters Makar (Capricorn) and begins Uttarayan, its northward journey. Unlike most Hindu festivals, it follows the solar calendar, so the date is nearly fixed.
Which mantra to chant on Makar Sankranti?
Chant the Surya Mantra "Om Suryaya Namah" and "Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah" while offering arghya to the Sun, and the Gayatri Mantra. Recite the Aditya Hridaya Stotra and Surya Chalisa, and chant the twelve Surya Namaskar mantras.
What to do on Makar Sankranti?
Take a holy bath at sunrise (ideally in the Ganga or a sacred river), offer arghya to the Sun with the Surya mantra, and perform daan (charity) of til (sesame), gud (jaggery), khichdi, blankets and food. Eat til-gud sweets, fly kites, and worship Surya. It is one of the most meritorious days for charity and holy bathing.
Why is Makar Sankranti auspicious?
It marks Uttarayan — the Sun's northward journey — considered the bright, auspicious half of the year, the time the scriptures call the path of the gods. Bhishma himself waited for Uttarayan to leave his body. Charity and worship done on this day are believed to bring manifold merit.
