Monday Somvar Vrat (Shiva Fast)
सोमवार व्रत (शिव व्रत)
Somvar Vrat (सोमवार व्रत) is the most popular weekly vrat dedicated to Lord Shiva. Observed every Monday, it is especially powerful during the months of Shravan (July-August) when Shravan Somvar is celebrated. The Solah Somvar Vrat (16 Monday fast) is observed for marriage, marital bliss, and fulfillment of desires. Monday is Lord Shiva's day — the word "Somvar" comes from "Soma" (Moon), which adorns Shiva's head.
Fasting Rules & Vidhi
Wake up early, take bath, and wear clean clothes. Visit a Shiva temple if possible.
Fast the entire day. One meal is permitted in the evening after puja.
Offer Bilva (Bael) leaves, milk, water, and white flowers to Shiva Lingam.
Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
Recite Shiv Chalisa and perform Shiva Aarti (Om Jai Shiv Omkara).
For Solah Somvar Vrat: observe 16 consecutive Mondays. Read the Solah Somvar Katha each Monday.
Significance & Story
Monday is ruled by the Moon, which sits on Lord Shiva's head. Shiva controls the mind (represented by the Moon), and fasting on Monday brings mental peace and emotional stability. In Shravan month, when the Sun enters Cancer, the Moon's influence is strongest, making Shravan Mondays extremely sacred for Shiva worship. The Solah Somvar Katha tells the story of how even Lord Shiva himself observed this vrat.
