Saturday Shanivar Vrat (Shani Dev Fast)
शनिवार व्रत (शनि देव व्रत)
Shanivar Vrat (शनिवार व्रत) is dedicated to Shani Dev (Saturn), the most feared yet most rewarding planet in Vedic astrology. Saturday fasting is essential during Sade Sati (7.5-year Saturn transit), Shani Dhaiya, and Shani Mahadasha. Shani Dev is the lord of karma — he rewards the righteous and punishes wrongdoers. Regular Saturday vrat pacifies Saturn and converts obstacles into opportunities.
Fasting Rules & Vidhi
Wake early, bathe, and wear black or dark blue clothes.
Fast the entire day. One meal of food made with mustard oil (sarson ka tel) in the evening.
Visit a Shani temple or worship under a Peepal tree.
Offer mustard oil, black sesame seeds (til), black urad dal, and iron items to Shani.
Recite Shani Chalisa and Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra.
Donate black items — black cloth, black sesame, mustard oil, or iron utensils to the needy.
Significance & Story
Shani Dev is the son of Surya (Sun) and Chhaya (Shadow). He is the strict judge of karma who ensures everyone receives the results of their actions. Sade Sati — the 7.5-year transit of Saturn over your Moon sign — is the most challenging period but also the most transformative. Saturday vrat during Sade Sati reduces suffering and accelerates karmic lessons. Hanuman Chalisa is also powerful for Shani relief, as Hanuman freed Shani from Ravana's prison.
