Shiva Puja Vidhi at Home

शिव पूजा विधि

Deity: Lord ShivaBest Day: Monday, Pradosh, Maha Shivaratri, Shravan month

Lord Shiva is the simplest God to please — he is called "Ashutosh" (easily pleased) and "Bholenath" (innocent lord). Shiva puja can be performed with just water, Bilva leaves, and sincere devotion. This guide covers the complete step-by-step Shiva puja vidhi including Shivling Abhishekam (ritual bathing), mantra chanting, and aarti.

Puja Samagri (Materials Required)

Shivling (stone or metal)
Bilva (Bael) leaves — 3-leafed
Milk, water, honey, curd, ghee (for Abhishekam)
White flowers (madar/aak flowers are best)
Dhatura flowers and fruit (if available)
Bhasma (sacred ash) or vibhuti
Chandan (sandalwood paste)
Incense sticks (dhoop)
Ghee diya
Camphor for aarti
White cloth
Gangajal (holy water)

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Preparation

Take bath, wear clean clothes (preferably white). Clean the puja area. Place the Shivling on a clean plate or Yoni base facing North.

2

Dhyana (Meditation)

Close your eyes and meditate on Lord Shiva sitting in meditation on Mount Kailash. Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" slowly three times to calm the mind.

3

Jal Abhishekam (Water)

Pour Gangajal or clean water on the Shivling slowly. The water should flow continuously while you chant mantras. Never use hot water.

4

Dugdh Abhishekam (Milk)

Pour raw (unboiled) milk on the Shivling. Milk represents purity and nurturing. Let it flow completely over the Lingam.

5

Dahi Abhishekam (Curd)

Pour fresh curd on the Shivling. Curd represents prosperity and the removal of ignorance.

6

Madhu Abhishekam (Honey)

Pour honey on the Shivling. Honey represents sweet speech and the sweetness of devotion.

7

Ghee Abhishekam

Pour ghee (clarified butter) on the Shivling. Ghee represents the essence of life and spiritual nourishment.

8

Shringar (Decoration)

Apply chandan (sandalwood paste) and bhasma. Offer Bilva leaves (3-leaf clusters) on top of the Lingam. Offer white flowers around the base.

9

Mantra Japa

Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times (one mala). Then chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra 108 times. Recite Shiv Chalisa.

10

Aarti

Light camphor and perform Shiva Aarti — "Om Jai Shiv Omkara, Swami Jai Shiv Omkara." End with "Karpur Gauram Karunavataram."

Important Tips

💡

Bilva (Bael) leaves are Shiva's most sacred offering — even a single Bilva leaf offered with devotion pleases Mahadev more than gold.

💡

During Abhishekam, the water/milk should drain away (not collect). Place a collection plate to channel it away or use a self-draining base.

💡

Never offer Tulsi (basil) or Ketaki flower to Shiva — these are the only two forbidden offerings.

💡

The best time for Shiva puja is during Brahma Muhurta (4-6 AM) or Pradosh Kaal (dusk).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we keep Shivling at home?
Yes, you can keep a Narmadeshwar Shivling (from the Narmada river), crystal (Sphatik) Shivling, or Parad (mercury) Shivling at home. Small Shivlings (under 6 inches) are ideal for home puja. Once established, daily worship is required.
Can women do Shiva puja?
Absolutely yes. There is no restriction on women worshipping Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati herself is the greatest Shiva devotee. Women can do Abhishekam, touch the Shivling, and perform all rituals.
Why pour water on Shivling?
When Shiva consumed the Halahala poison during Samudra Manthan, the poison heated his body tremendously. Pouring water cools the Shivling and symbolically soothes Lord Shiva. Continuous water flow also represents the unbroken stream of devotion.
