Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi
सत्यनारायण पूजा विधि
Satyanarayan Puja is one of the most commonly performed Hindu pujas at home. Lord Satyanarayan is a form of Lord Vishnu who represents truth (Satya). This puja is performed on Purnima (Full Moon), after good news (new house, job promotion, wedding, childbirth), or as a regular monthly worship. The puja includes the reading of the Satyanarayan Katha (5 chapters) and distributing Sheera/Panchamrit prasad.
Puja Samagri (Materials Required)
Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi
Sankalp (Resolution)
State your intention and the reason for performing the puja. Hold water, flowers, and rice in your right hand and make the Sankalp — "I am performing Satyanarayan Puja for [your purpose]." Pour the water on the ground.
Ganesh Puja
Invoke Lord Ganesha first. Offer durva grass, modak, and chant Ganesh Mantra 11 times. This removes obstacles from the puja.
Kalash Sthapana
Fill a copper/brass Kalash with water, mango leaves, supari, and a coconut on top. Tie yellow thread around it. Place it on rice grains drawn in a swastika pattern.
Satyanarayan Avahana
Invoke Lord Satyanarayan by chanting "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya." Offer flowers, kumkum, and Tulsi leaves to the deity.
Katha Reading (5 Chapters)
Read the Satyanarayan Katha aloud. There are 5 chapters — each followed by offering naivedya. All family members should listen attentively. The katha describes 5 stories of devotees who gained blessings through Satyanarayan worship.
Sheera Naivedya
Prepare Sheera (suji halwa) with ghee, sugar, and dry fruits. Offer to the Lord after each chapter. This is the main prasad of Satyanarayan Puja.
Aarti
Perform "Om Jai Jagdish Hare" aarti with camphor. All family members should participate in the aarti. Ring the bell continuously during aarti.
Prasad Distribution
Distribute the Sheera and Panchamrit prasad to all present. Everyone must accept and eat the prasad — refusing Satyanarayan prasad is said to bring misfortune (as told in Chapter 5 of the Katha).

Important Tips
Never refuse Satyanarayan Prasad — the 5th chapter of the Katha warns about the consequences of disrespecting the prasad.
Invite family, friends, and neighbors — Satyanarayan Puja is most powerful when performed with community.
The puja can be performed by anyone regardless of caste, gender, or financial status. Lord Satyanarayan blesses all equally.
Banana is considered essential — place banana leaves under the puja setup and offer bananas as fruit offering.
