रक्षा बंधन मंत्र — पवित्र राखी

Raksha Bandhan (रक्षा बंधन) celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, when a sister ties a rakhi (sacred thread) on her brother's wrist and he vows to protect her. The thread of "raksha" (protection) is rooted in stories of Draupadi and Krishna, and of Lakshmi and King Bali. These are the mantras for Raksha Bandhan.

The Rakhi-Tying Mantra

As the rakhi is tied, the traditional mantra is chanted: "Yena Baddho Bali Raja Danavendro Mahabalah, Tena Tvam Anubadhnami Rakshe Maa Chala Maa Chala" — "I bind you with the same thread that bound the mighty King Bali; O Raksha, never waver."

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Raksha Bandhan 2026?
Raksha Bandhan in 2026 falls in August, on the full moon (Purnima) of the month of Shravana. The rakhi is tied during the auspicious time, avoiding any Bhadra period in the morning.
Which mantra to chant while tying rakhi?
The traditional mantra is "Yena Baddho Bali Raja Danavendro Mahabalah, Tena Tvam Anubadhnami Rakshe Maa Chala Maa Chala" — invoking the protective thread that bound King Bali. Begin with the Ganesh Mantra, and recite the Hanuman Chalisa for protection.
What is the story behind Raksha Bandhan?
Several stories: Draupadi tore her sari to bandage Krishna's wrist, and he vowed to protect her, repaying it during her disrobing; Goddess Lakshmi tied a rakhi on King Bali to win freedom for Vishnu; and Indrani tied a protective thread on Indra before battle. The common thread is raksha — protection through a sacred bond.
How is Raksha Bandhan celebrated with prayers?
The sister performs aarti of the brother, applies a tilak, ties the rakhi while chanting the raksha mantra, and offers sweets; the brother gives a gift and vows protection. Many begin with a Ganesh prayer and offer the first rakhi to the family deity or Lord Krishna/Hanuman.
