Chapter Summary

After the fall of Mahishasura, Indra and the gods extol the Goddess in the great Shakradi Stuti — one of the most beloved hymns of the Devi Mahatmyam. They praise her as the power pervading the universe, the Prakriti behind the three gunas, Svaha and Svadha of every sacrifice, the supreme Vidya of the seekers of liberation, the Trayi (three Vedas), and as Shri in the virtuous, intelligence in the wise and modesty in the noble. They marvel that her face is at once tender as the full moon and terrible to her foes, that she shows compassion even to the enemies she slays, and they beg her protection on every side. Pleased, the Goddess offers a boon; the gods ask that she destroy their calamities whenever remembered, and that she grant prosperity to whoever praises her with these hymns. Granting it, Bhadrakali vanishes — and the sage foretells her next advent from Gauri to slay Shumbha and Nishumbha.

ध्यायेयं रत्नपीठे शुककलपठितं श‍ृण्वतीं श्यामलाङ्गीं न्यस्तैकांघ्रिं सरोजे शशिशकलधरां वल्लकीं वादयन्तीम् कल्हाराबद्धमालां नियमितविलसच्चोलिकां रत्नवस्त्रां मातङ्गी शङ्कपात्रां मधुरमधुमदां चित्रकोद्भासिभालाम्

oṃ dhyāyeyaṃ ratnapīṭhe śukakalapaṭhitaṃ śa‍ṛṇvatīṃ śyāmalāṅgīṃ nyastaikāṃghriṃ saroje śaśiśakaladharāṃ vallakīṃ vādayantīm kalhārābaddhamālāṃ niyamitavilasaccolikāṃ ratnavastrāṃ mātaṅgī śaṅkapātrāṃ madhuramadhumadāṃ citrakodbhāsibhālām

I meditate on Matangi (Mahasaraswati), dark-hued, seated on a jewelled throne, listening to the sweet notes recited by her parrot, one foot set upon a lotus, bearing a digit of the moon and playing the vallaki (vina); wearing a garland of white water-lilies, a well-fitted shining bodice and jewelled garments, holding a conch-cup, gently flushed with sweet wine, her brow resplendent with a painted mark.

4.1

ऋषिरुवाच शक्रादयः सुरगणा निहतेऽतिवीर्ये तस्मिन्दुरात्मनि सुरारिबले देव्या तां तुष्टुवुः प्रणतिनम्रशिरोधरांसा वाग्भिः प्रहर्षपुलकोद्गमचारुदेहाः

oṃ ṛṣiruvāca śakrādayaḥ suragaṇā nihate'tivīrye tasmindurātmani surāribale ca devyā tāṃ tuṣṭuvuḥ praṇatinamraśirodharāṃsā vāgbhiḥ praharṣapulakodgamacārudehāḥ

Meaning(Om. The Rishi said:) When that most valiant, evil-souled (Mahishasura) and the army of the foes of the gods had been destroyed by the Devi, the gods led by Indra extolled her, their necks and shoulders bowed in reverence, their bodies thrilled and beautiful with rising joy:

4.2

देव्या यया ततमिदं जगदात्मशक्त्या निःशेषदेवगणशक्तिसमूहमूर्त्या तामम्बिकामखिलदेवमहर्षिपूज्यां भक्त्या नताः स्म विदधातु शुभानि सा नः

devyā yayā tatamidaṃ jagadātmaśaktyā niḥśeṣadevagaṇaśaktisamūhamūrtyā tāmambikāmakhiladevamaharṣipūjyāṃ bhaktyā natāḥ sma vidadhātu śubhāni sā naḥ

Meaning'To that Ambika, who pervades this world by her own power, who is the embodied sum of the powers of all the hosts of gods, and who is worthy of worship by every god and great sage — to her we bow in devotion; may she ordain blessings for us.

4.3

यस्याः प्रभावमतुलं भगवाननन्तो ब्रह्मा हरश्च हि वक्तुमलं बलं सा चण्डिकाखिलजगत्परिपालनाय नाशाय चाशुभभयस्य मतिं करोतु

yasyāḥ prabhāvamatulaṃ bhagavānananto brahmā haraśca na hi vaktumalaṃ balaṃ ca sā caṇḍikākhilajagatparipālanāya nāśāya cāśubhabhayasya matiṃ karotu

MeaningMay that Chandika — whose peerless majesty and might the blessed Ananta (Vishnu), Brahma and Hara are unable to describe — set her mind upon the protection of the whole world and upon destroying the fear of all evil.

4.4

या श्रीः स्वयं सुकृतिनां भवनेष्वलक्ष्मीः पापात्मनां कृतधियां हृदयेषु बुद्धिः श्रद्धा सतां कुलजनप्रभवस्य लज्जा तां त्वां नताः स्म परिपालय देवि विश्वम्

yā śrīḥ svayaṃ sukṛtināṃ bhavaneṣvalakṣmīḥ pāpātmanāṃ kṛtadhiyāṃ hṛdayeṣu buddhiḥ śraddhā satāṃ kulajanaprabhavasya lajjā tāṃ tvāṃ natāḥ sma paripālaya devi viśvam

MeaningShe who is Shri (Lakshmi) herself in the homes of the virtuous and Alakshmi (ill-fortune) in the homes of the sinful, who is intelligence in the hearts of the wise, faith in the good and modesty in the high-born — to you, that very Goddess, we bow; protect the universe, O Devi.

4.5

किं वर्णयाम तव रूपमचिन्त्यमेतत् किञ्चातिवीर्यमसुरक्षयकारि भूरि किं चाहवेषु चरितानि तवाति यानि सर्वेषु देव्यसुरदेवगणादिकेषु

kiṃ varṇayāma tava rūpamacintyametat kiñcātivīryamasurakṣayakāri bhūri kiṃ cāhaveṣu caritāni tavāti yāni sarveṣu devyasuradevagaṇādikeṣu

MeaningHow can we describe this your inconceivable form, or your abundant surpassing valour that destroys the asuras, or your exploits in the battles among all — among gods, asuras and the rest, O Devi?

4.6

हेतुः समस्तजगतां त्रिगुणापि दोषै- र्न ज्ञायसे हरिहरादिभिरप्यपारा सर्वाश्रयाखिलमिदं जगदंशभूत- मव्याकृता हि परमा प्रकृतिस्त्वमाद्या

hetuḥ samastajagatāṃ triguṇāpi doṣai- rna jñāyase hariharādibhirapyapārā sarvāśrayākhilamidaṃ jagadaṃśabhūta- mavyākṛtā hi paramā prakṛtistvamādyā

MeaningThough the cause of all the worlds and endowed with the three gunas, you are not known to be touched by faults; you are unfathomable even to Hari, Hara and the rest. You are the refuge of all; this whole world is but a portion of you, for you are the supreme, unmanifest, primordial Prakriti.

4.7

यस्याः समस्तसुरता समुदीरणेन तृप्तिं प्रयाति सकलेषु मखेषु देवि स्वाहासि वै पितृगणस्य तृप्तिहेतु- रुच्चार्यसे त्वमत एव जनैः स्वधा

yasyāḥ samastasuratā samudīraṇena tṛptiṃ prayāti sakaleṣu makheṣu devi svāhāsi vai pitṛgaṇasya ca tṛptihetu- ruccāryase tvamata eva janaiḥ svadhā ca

MeaningO Devi, by whose utterance all the gods attain satisfaction in every sacrifice, you are verily Svaha and the cause of satisfaction to the hosts of the Pitris (ancestors); therefore people utter you also as Svadha.

4.8

या मुक्तिहेतुरविचिन्त्यमहाव्रता त्वं अभ्यस्यसे सुनियतेन्द्रियतत्त्वसारैः मोक्षार्थिभिर्मुनिभिरस्तसमस्तदोषै- र्विद्यासि सा भगवती परमा हि देवि

yā muktiheturavicintyamahāvratā tvaṃ abhyasyase suniyatendriyatattvasāraiḥ mokṣārthibhirmunibhirastasamastadoṣai- rvidyāsi sā bhagavatī paramā hi devi

MeaningYou who are the cause of liberation, of inconceivable great vow (mahavrata), are meditated upon by liberation-seeking sages of well-controlled senses, who have grasped the essence of truth and shed all faults; you are that supreme Vidya, the Bhagavati, O Devi.

4.9

शब्दात्मिका सुविमलर्ग्यजुषां निधान- मुद्गीथरम्यपदपाठवतां साम्नाम् देवि त्रयी भगवती भवभावनाय वार्तासि सर्वजगतां परमार्तिहन्त्री

śabdātmikā suvimalargyajuṣāṃ nidhāna- mudgītharamyapadapāṭhavatāṃ ca sāmnām devi trayī bhagavatī bhavabhāvanāya vārtāsi sarvajagatāṃ paramārtihantrī

MeaningYou are of the nature of sound, the treasure-house of the pure Rig and Yajus mantras and of the Sama-hymns with their lovely Udgitha recitation; O Devi, you are the Trayi (three Vedas), the Bhagavati, the sustenance for the being of all the worlds, and the supreme remover of their afflictions.

4.10

मेधासि देवि विदिताखिलशास्त्रसारा दुर्गासि दुर्गभवसागरनौरसङ्गा श्रीः कैटभारिहृदयैककृताधिवासा गौरी त्वमेव शशिमौलिकृतप्रतिष्ठा

medhāsi devi viditākhilaśāstrasārā durgāsi durgabhavasāgaranaurasaṅgā śrīḥ kaiṭabhārihṛdayaikakṛtādhivāsā gaurī tvameva śaśimaulikṛtapratiṣṭhā

MeaningYou are Medha (intelligence), O Devi, knowing the essence of all scriptures; you are Durga, the unattached boat that ferries one across the difficult ocean of existence; you are Shri, dwelling solely in the heart of the slayer of Kaitabha (Vishnu); you alone are Gauri, established in the moon-crested Shiva.

4.11

ईषत्सहासममलं परिपूर्णचन्द्र- बिम्बानुकारि कनकोत्तमकान्तिकान्तम् अत्यद्भुतं प्रहृतमात्तरुषा तथापि वक्त्रं विलोक्य सहसा महिषासुरेण

īṣatsahāsamamalaṃ paripūrṇacandra- bimbānukāri kanakottamakāntikāntam atyadbhutaṃ prahṛtamāttaruṣā tathāpi vaktraṃ vilokya sahasā mahiṣāsureṇa

MeaningSlightly smiling, spotless, resembling the orb of the full moon, lovely as the finest gold in lustre was your face — and yet, how very strange, that Mahishasura, his fury roused, on suddenly beholding it, struck at it!

4.12

दृष्ट्वा तु देवि कुपितं भ्रुकुटीकराल- मुद्यच्छशाङ्कसदृशच्छवि यन्न सद्यः प्राणान् मुमोच महिषस्तदतीव चित्रं कैर्जीव्यते हि कुपितान्तकदर्शनेन

dṛṣṭvā tu devi kupitaṃ bhrukuṭīkarāla- mudyacchaśāṅkasadṛśacchavi yanna sadyaḥ prāṇān mumoca mahiṣastadatīva citraṃ kairjīvyate hi kupitāntakadarśanena

MeaningBut that Mahisha, O Devi, on seeing your wrathful face — terrible with frowns and red like the rising moon — did not at once give up his life: that is most wondrous! For who can live after beholding angered Death (Antaka)?

4.13

देवि प्रसीद परमा भवती भवाय सद्यो विनाशयसि कोपवती कुलानि विज्ञातमेतदधुनैव यदस्तमेत- न्नीतं बलं सुविपुलं महिषासुरस्य

devi prasīda paramā bhavatī bhavāya sadyo vināśayasi kopavatī kulāni vijñātametadadhunaiva yadastameta- nnītaṃ balaṃ suvipulaṃ mahiṣāsurasya

MeaningBe gracious, O supreme Devi, for our welfare; when angered you destroy whole families in a moment. This was known this very instant, in that the vast army of Mahishasura has been brought to its end.

4.14

ते सम्मता जनपदेषु धनानि तेषां तेषां यशांसि सीदति बन्धुवर्गः धन्यास्त एव निभृतात्मजभृत्यदारा येषां सदाभ्युदयदा भवती प्रसन्ना

te sammatā janapadeṣu dhanāni teṣāṃ teṣāṃ yaśāṃsi na ca sīdati bandhuvargaḥ dhanyāsta eva nibhṛtātmajabhṛtyadārā yeṣāṃ sadābhyudayadā bhavatī prasannā

MeaningHonoured are they in the lands, theirs are riches and theirs the glory, and their kinsfolk do not sink into misery; blessed indeed are they whose sons, servants and wives are devoted, and on whom you, ever the giver of prosperity, are well pleased.

4.15

धर्म्याणि देवि सकलानि सदैव कर्मा- ण्यत्यादृतः प्रतिदिनं सुकृती करोति स्वर्गं प्रयाति ततो भवती प्रसादा- ल्लोकत्रयेऽपि फलदा ननु देवि तेन

dharmyāṇi devi sakalāni sadaiva karmā- ṇyatyādṛtaḥ pratidinaṃ sukṛtī karoti svargaṃ prayāti ca tato bhavatī prasādā- llokatraye'pi phaladā nanu devi tena

MeaningBy your grace, O Devi, the virtuous man performs daily, with deep reverence, all righteous deeds, and thereby goes to heaven; are you not therefore the bestower of rewards throughout the three worlds, O Devi?

4.16

दुर्गे स्मृता हरसि भीतिमशेषजन्तोः स्वस्थैः स्मृता मतिमतीव शुभां ददासि दारिद्र्यदुःखभयहारिणि का त्वदन्या सर्वोपकारकरणाय सदार्द्रचित्ता

durge smṛtā harasi bhītimaśeṣajantoḥ svasthaiḥ smṛtā matimatīva śubhāṃ dadāsi dāridryaduḥkhabhayahāriṇi kā tvadanyā sarvopakārakaraṇāya sadārdracittā

MeaningO Durga, remembered, you remove the fear of every creature; remembered by those in well-being, you bestow a most auspicious mind. O remover of poverty, pain and fear, who but you has a heart ever tender to do good to all?

4.17

एभिर्हतैर्जगदुपैति सुखं तथैते कुर्वन्तु नाम नरकाय चिराय पापम् सङ्ग्राममृत्युमधिगम्य दिवं प्रयान्तु मत्वेति नूनमहितान्विनिहंसि देवि

ebhirhatairjagadupaiti sukhaṃ tathaite kurvantu nāma narakāya cirāya pāpam saṅgrāmamṛtyumadhigamya divaṃ prayāntu matveti nūnamahitānvinihaṃsi devi

MeaningBy the slaying of these (foes) the world attains happiness; and though these have long done sin deserving hell, (you think) 'let them, by meeting death in battle, go to heaven' — thinking thus, surely, you slay the enemies, O Devi.

4.18

दृष्ट्वैव किं भवती प्रकरोति भस्म सर्वासुरानरिषु यत्प्रहिणोषि शस्त्रम् लोकान्प्रयान्तु रिपवोऽपि हि शस्त्रपूता इत्थं मतिर्भवति तेष्वहितेषुसाध्वी

dṛṣṭvaiva kiṃ na bhavatī prakaroti bhasma sarvāsurānariṣu yatprahiṇoṣi śastram lokānprayāntu ripavo'pi hi śastrapūtā itthaṃ matirbhavati teṣvahiteṣusādhvī

MeaningDo you not reduce all the asuras to ashes by your mere glance? Yet you turn your weapon upon the foes so that, purified by your weapon, even your enemies may attain the higher worlds — such is your benign intent towards them.

4.19

खड्गप्रभानिकरविस्फुरणैस्तथोग्रैः शूलाग्रकान्तिनिवहेन दृशोऽसुराणाम् यन्नागता विलयमंशुमदिन्दुखण्ड- योग्याननं तव विलोकयतां तदेतत्

khaḍgaprabhānikaravisphuraṇaistathograiḥ śūlāgrakāntinivahena dṛśo'surāṇām yannāgatā vilayamaṃśumadindukhaṇḍa- yogyānanaṃ tava vilokayatāṃ tadetat

MeaningIf the eyes of the asuras were not destroyed by the fierce flashing masses of light from your sword and the multitude of rays from your spear-point, it was because they were gazing upon your face, resembling a portion of the cool-rayed moon.

4.20

दुर्वृत्तवृत्तशमनं तव देवि शीलं रूपं तथैतदविचिन्त्यमतुल्यमन्यैः वीर्यं हन्तृ हृतदेवपराक्रमाणां वैरिष्वपि प्रकटितैव दया त्वयेत्थम्

durvṛttavṛttaśamanaṃ tava devi śīlaṃ rūpaṃ tathaitadavicintyamatulyamanyaiḥ vīryaṃ ca hantṛ hṛtadevaparākramāṇāṃ vairiṣvapi prakaṭitaiva dayā tvayettham

MeaningYour nature, O Devi, is the quelling of the conduct of the wicked; this your form is inconceivable and matched by none other; your valour is the destroyer of those who robbed the gods of their might — and thus you have shown compassion even towards your foes.

4.21

केनोपमा भवतु तेऽस्य पराक्रमस्य रूपं शत्रुभयकार्यतिहारि कुत्र चित्ते कृपा समरनिष्ठुरता दृष्टा त्वय्येव देवि वरदे भुवनत्रयेऽपि

kenopamā bhavatu te'sya parākramasya rūpaṃ ca śatrubhayakāryatihāri kutra citte kṛpā samaraniṣṭhuratā ca dṛṣṭā tvayyeva devi varade bhuvanatraye'pi

MeaningWith what may this your valour be compared? And where is a form so charming yet striking terror into foes? Compassion in the heart and relentlessness in battle — both, O boon-giving Devi, are seen in you alone, in all the three worlds!

4.22

त्रैलोक्यमेतदखिलं रिपुनाशनेन त्रातं त्वया समरमूर्धनि तेऽपि हत्वा नीता दिवं रिपुगणा भयमप्यपास्तम् अस्माकमुन्मदसुरारिभवं नमस्ते

trailokyametadakhilaṃ ripunāśanena trātaṃ tvayā samaramūrdhani te'pi hatvā nītā divaṃ ripugaṇā bhayamapyapāstam asmākamunmadasurāribhavaṃ namaste

MeaningThis entire three worlds has been saved by you through the destruction of the foes; having slain them on the front of battle you have led the enemy hosts to heaven, and dispelled too our fear born of the frenzied foes of the gods — salutation to you!

4.23

शूलेन पाहि नो देवि पाहि खड्गेन चाम्बिके घण्टास्वनेन नः पाहि चापज्यानिःस्वनेन

śūlena pāhi no devi pāhi khaḍgena cāmbike ghaṇṭāsvanena naḥ pāhi cāpajyāniḥsvanena ca

MeaningProtect us with your spear, O Devi; protect us, O Ambika, with your sword; protect us by the sound of your bell and by the twang of your bowstring.

4.24

प्राच्यां रक्ष प्रतीच्यां चण्डिके रक्ष दक्षिणे भ्रामणेनात्मशूलस्य उत्तरस्यां तथेश्वरि

prācyāṃ rakṣa pratīcyāṃ ca caṇḍike rakṣa dakṣiṇe bhrāmaṇenātmaśūlasya uttarasyāṃ tatheśvari

MeaningGuard us in the east and the west, O Chandika; guard us in the south, and in the north too, O Ishwari, by the whirling of your spear.

4.25

सौम्यानि यानि रूपाणि त्रैलोक्ये विचरन्ति ते यानि चात्यन्तघोराणि तै रक्षास्मांस्तथा भुवम्

saumyāni yāni rūpāṇi trailokye vicaranti te yāni cātyantaghorāṇi tai rakṣāsmāṃstathā bhuvam

MeaningWith those gentle forms of yours that roam the three worlds, and with those exceedingly terrible forms, guard us and the earth.

4.26

खड्गशूलगदादीनि यानि चास्त्रानि तेऽम्बिके करपल्लवसङ्गीनि तैरस्मान्रक्ष सर्वतः

khaḍgaśūlagadādīni yāni cāstrāni te'mbike karapallavasaṅgīni tairasmānrakṣa sarvataḥ

MeaningO Ambika, with the sword, spear, mace and the other weapons that rest in your tender, sprout-like hands, guard us on every side.

4.27

ऋषिरुवाच एवं स्तुता सुरैर्दिव्यैः कुसुमैर्नन्दनोद्भवैः अर्चिता जगतां धात्री तथा गन्धानुलेपनैः

ṛṣiruvāca evaṃ stutā surairdivyaiḥ kusumairnandanodbhavaiḥ arcitā jagatāṃ dhātrī tathā gandhānulepanaiḥ

Meaning(The Rishi said:) Thus extolled by the gods, and worshipped with celestial flowers grown in Nandana and with fragrant unguents, the Supporter of the worlds,

4.28

भक्त्या समस्तैस्त्रिदशैर्दिव्यैर्धूपैः सुधूपिता प्राह प्रसादसुमुखी समस्तान् प्रणतान् सुरान्

bhaktyā samastaistridaśairdivyairdhūpaiḥ sudhūpitā prāha prasādasumukhī samastān praṇatān surān

Meaningcensed with divine incense by all the gods in devotion, with gracious countenance spoke to all the prostrate gods:

4.29

देव्युवाच व्रियतां त्रिदशाः सर्वे यदस्मत्तोऽभिवाञ्छितम्

devyuvāca vriyatāṃ tridaśāḥ sarve yadasmatto'bhivāñchitam

Meaning(The Devi said:) 'Choose, O gods, all of you, whatever is desired by you from me.'

4.30

देवा ऊचुः भगवत्या कृतं सर्वं किञ्चिदवशिष्यते

devā ūcuḥ bhagavatyā kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ na kiñcidavaśiṣyate

Meaning(The gods said:) 'Everything has been accomplished by you, O Bhagavati; nothing remains to be done,

4.31

यदयं निहतः शत्रुरस्माकं महिषासुरः यदि चापि वरो देयस्त्वयास्माकं महेश्वरि

yadayaṃ nihataḥ śatrurasmākaṃ mahiṣāsuraḥ yadi cāpi varo deyastvayāsmākaṃ maheśvari

Meaningin that this enemy of ours, Mahishasura, has been slain. And yet, O Maheshwari, if a boon is to be granted to us by you,

4.32

संस्मृता संस्मृता त्वं नो हिंसेथाः परमापदः यश्च मर्त्यः स्तवैरेभिस्त्वां स्तोष्यत्यमलानने

saṃsmṛtā saṃsmṛtā tvaṃ no hiṃsethāḥ paramāpadaḥ yaśca martyaḥ stavairebhistvāṃ stoṣyatyamalānane

Meaning(then this:) whenever we call you to mind, may you destroy our greatest calamities. And, O you of spotless face, whatever mortal shall praise you with these hymns,

4.33

तस्य वित्तर्द्धिविभवैर्धनदारादिसम्पदाम् वृद्धयेऽस्मत्प्रसन्ना त्वं भवेथाः सर्वदाम्बिके

tasya vittarddhivibhavairdhanadārādisampadām vṛddhaye'smatprasannā tvaṃ bhavethāḥ sarvadāmbike

Meaningon him, well pleased, may you ever bestow the increase of wealth and prosperity — of riches, wife and every blessing, O Ambika.'

4.34

ऋषिरुवाच इति प्रसादिता देवैर्जगतोऽर्थे तथात्मनः तथेत्युक्त्वा भद्रकाली बभूवान्तर्हिता नृप

ṛṣiruvāca iti prasāditā devairjagato'rthe tathātmanaḥ tathetyuktvā bhadrakālī babhūvāntarhitā nṛpa

Meaning(The Rishi said:) Thus propitiated by the gods for the sake of the world and of themselves, Bhadrakali, saying 'So be it', vanished from sight, O King.

4.35

इत्येतत्कथितं भूप सम्भूता सा यथा पुरा देवी देवशरीरेभ्यो जगत्त्रयहितैषिणी

ityetatkathitaṃ bhūpa sambhūtā sā yathā purā devī devaśarīrebhyo jagattrayahitaiṣiṇī

MeaningThus has it been told, O King, how the Devi, desiring the good of the three worlds, arose of old from the bodies of the gods.

4.36

पुनश्च गौरीदेहात्सा समुद्भूता यथाभवत् वधाय दुष्टदैत्यानां तथा शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः

punaśca gaurīdehātsā samudbhūtā yathābhavat vadhāya duṣṭadaityānāṃ tathā śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ

MeaningAnd hear again how she arose from the body of Gauri, for the slaying of the wicked daityas and of Shumbha and Nishumbha,

4.37

रक्षणाय लोकानां देवानामुपकारिणी तच्छृणुष्व मयाख्यातं यथावत्कथयामि ते

rakṣaṇāya ca lokānāṃ devānāmupakāriṇī tacchṛṇuṣva mayākhyātaṃ yathāvatkathayāmi te
