नारायणीस्तुति
Nārāyaṇī Stuti
The Hymn to Narayani · 51 verses
▶ Listen to recitationChapter Summary
With Shumbha slain, Indra and the gods pour out the Narayani Stuti — among the most beloved hymns of the Devi Mahatmyam. They adore her as the support of the world, the Vaishnavi power and seed of the universe, the essence of all knowledge and all women, and salute her 'Narayani namostute' in each of her cosmic forms — Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasimhi, Aindri, Shivaduti and Chamunda — and as Lakshmi, Sarasvati, Shraddha, Durga and more (including the supreme verse 'Sarva-mangala-mangalye'). Pleased, the Goddess offers a boon; the gods ask that she ever quell the world's calamities. She then foretells her future advents — as Vindhyavasini (born of Yashoda) to slay Shumbha and Nishumbha reborn, as Raktadantika, as Shatakshi and Shakambhari in a great drought, as Durga (slaying Durgama), as Bhima, and as Bhramari (slaying Aruna) — promising to descend whenever danava-born trouble arises.

I worship Bhuvaneshwari, Mistress of the worlds, radiant as the morning sun, the moon for her diadem, full-bosomed, three-eyed and smiling-faced, who bears in her hands the boon-giving gesture, the goad, the noose and the gesture of fearlessness.
