Chapter Summary
Chanda and Munda march against the Goddess with a fourfold army. As they move to seize her, Ambika's face turns black as ink with wrath, and from her knit brow springs Kali — terrible of countenance, sword and noose in hand, garlanded with skulls, clad in a tiger-skin. She devours the asura host whole, flinging elephants, chariots and warriors into her mouth and crunching their weapons in her teeth. When Chanda buries her in arrows and Munda in a thousand discuses, she laughs a fearful laugh, mounts her lion, and beheads Chanda, then Munda. Bearing their two heads to Chandika, Kali offers them as the sacrifice of battle — and the Goddess, pleased, declares that henceforth she shall be famed in the world as Chamunda.

ಓಂ ಧ್ಯಾಯೇಯಂ ರತ್ನಪೀಠೇ ಶುಕಕಲಪಠಿತಂ ಶೃಣ್ವತೀಂ ಶ್ಯಾಮಲಾಙ್ಗೀಂ ನ್ಯಸ್ತೈಕಾಂಘ್ರಿಂ ಸರೋಜೇ ಶಶಿಶಕಲಧರಾಂ ವಲ್ಲಕೀಂ ವಾದಯನ್ತೀಮ್ । ಕಲ್ಹಾರಾಬದ್ಧಮಾಲಾಂ ನಿಯಮಿತವಿಲಸಚ್ಚೋಲಿಕಾಂ ರತ್ನವಸ್ತ್ರಾಂ ಮಾತಙ್ಗೀ ಶಙ್ಕಪಾತ್ರಾಂ ಮಧುರಮಧುಮದಾಂ ಚಿತ್ರಕೋದ್ಭಾಸಿಭಾಲಾಮ್ ॥

ಓಂ ಋಷಿರುವಾಚ ಆಜ್ಞಪ್ತಾಸ್ತೇ ತತೋ ದೈತ್ಯಾಶ್ಚಣ್ಡಮುಣ್ಡಪುರೋಗಮಾಃ । ಚತುರಙ್ಗಬಲೋಪೇತಾ ಯಯುರಭ್ಯುದ್ಯತಾಯುಧಾಃ ॥
oṃ ṛṣiruvāca ājñaptāste tato daityāścaṇḍamuṇḍapurogamāḥ caturaṅgabalopetā yayurabhyudyatāyudhāḥ
Meaning(Om. The Rishi said:) Thus commanded, those daityas, with Chanda and Munda at their head, marched forth with weapons uplifted, equipped with the fourfold army.
ದದೃಶುಸ್ತೇ ತತೋ ದೇವೀಮೀಷದ್ಧಾಸಾಂ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತಾಮ್ । ಸಿಂಹಸ್ಯೋಪರಿ ಶೈಲೇನ್ದ್ರಶೃಙ್ಗೇ ಮಹತಿ ಕಾಞ್ಚನೇ ॥
dadṛśuste tato devīmīṣaddhāsāṃ vyavasthitām siṃhasyopari śailendraśaṛṅge mahati kāñcane
MeaningThey then saw the Devi, slightly smiling, seated upon her lion on a great golden peak of the lord of mountains.
ತೇ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಾಂ ಸಮಾದಾತುಮುದ್ಯಮಂ ಚಕ್ರುರುದ್ಯತಾಃ । ಆಕೃಷ್ಟಚಾಪಾಸಿಧರಾಸ್ತಥಾನ್ಯೇ ತತ್ಸಮೀಪಗಾಃ ॥
te dṛṣṭvā tāṃ samādātumudyamaṃ cakrurudyatāḥ ākṛṣṭacāpāsidharāstathānye tatsamīpagāḥ
MeaningOn seeing her, some of them, exerting themselves, strove to seize her, while others, bows and swords drawn, drew near her.
ತತಃ ಕೋಪಂ ಚಕಾರೋಚ್ಚೈರಮ್ಬಿಕಾ ತಾನರೀನ್ಪ್ರತಿ । ಕೋಪೇನ ಚಾಸ್ಯಾ ವದನಂ ಮಷೀವರ್ಣಮಭೂತ್ತದಾ ॥
tataḥ kopaṃ cakāroccairambikā tānarīnprati kopena cāsyā vadanaṃ maṣīvarṇamabhūttadā
MeaningThereupon Ambika became fiercely angry with those foes; and out of anger her face then became black as ink.
ಭ್ರುಕುಟೀಕುಟಿಲಾತ್ತಸ್ಯಾ ಲಲಾಟಫಲಕಾದ್ದ್ರುತಮ್ । ಕಾಲೀ ಕರಾಲವದನಾ ವಿನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಾನ್ತಾಸಿಪಾಶಿನೀ ॥
bhrukuṭīkuṭilāttasyā lalāṭaphalakāddrutam kālī karālavadanā viniṣkrāntāsipāśinī
MeaningFrom the knit brow of her forehead there suddenly sprang forth Kali, of terrible countenance, armed with sword and noose,
ವಿಚಿತ್ರಖಟ್ವಾಙ್ಗಧರಾ ನರಮಾಲಾವಿಭೂಷಣಾ । ದ್ವೀಪಿಚರ್ಮಪರೀಧಾನಾ ಶುಷ್ಕಮಾಂಸಾತಿಭೈರವಾ ॥
vicitrakhaṭvāṅgadharā naramālāvibhūṣaṇā dvīpicarmaparīdhānā śuṣkamāṃsātibhairavā
Meaningbearing a strange skull-topped staff (khatvanga), adorned with a garland of human heads, clad in a tiger's skin, gruesome with her shrivelled flesh,
ಅತಿವಿಸ್ತಾರವದನಾ ಜಿಹ್ವಾಲಲನಭೀಷಣಾ । ನಿಮಗ್ನಾರಕ್ತನಯನಾ ನಾದಾಪೂರಿತದಿಙ್ಮುಖಾ ॥
ativistāravadanā jihvālalanabhīṣaṇā nimagnāraktanayanā nādāpūritadiṅmukhā
Meaningher mouth gaping wide, terrifying with her lolling tongue, with deep-sunken reddened eyes, filling the quarters of the sky with her roar.
ಸಾ ವೇಗೇನಾಭಿಪತಿತಾ ಘಾತಯನ್ತೀ ಮಹಾಸುರಾನ್ । ಸೈನ್ಯೇ ತತ್ರ ಸುರಾರೀಣಾಮಭಕ್ಷಯತ ತದ್ಬಲಮ್ ॥
sā vegenābhipatitā ghātayantī mahāsurān sainye tatra surārīṇāmabhakṣayata tadbalam
MeaningShe fell upon the great asuras with speed, slaying them, and devoured that army of the foes of the gods.
ಪಾರ್ಷ್ಣಿಗ್ರಾಹಾಙ್ಕುಶಗ್ರಾಹಯೋಧಘಣ್ಟಾಸಮನ್ವಿತಾನ್ । ಸಮಾದಾಯೈಕಹಸ್ತೇನ ಮುಖೇ ಚಿಕ್ಷೇಪ ವಾರಣಾನ್ ॥
pārṣṇigrāhāṅkuśagrāhayodhaghaṇṭāsamanvitān samādāyaikahastena mukhe cikṣepa vāraṇān
MeaningSeizing in one hand the elephants — with their rear-guards, drivers, warriors and bells — she flung them into her mouth.
ತಥೈವ ಯೋಧಂ ತುರಗೈ ರಥಂ ಸಾರಥಿನಾ ಸಹ । ನಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ಯ ವಕ್ತ್ರೇ ದಶನೈಶ್ಚರ್ವಯನ್ತ್ಯತಿಭೈರವಮ್ ॥
tathaiva yodhaṃ turagai rathaṃ sārathinā saha nikṣipya vaktre daśanaiścarvayantyatibhairavam
MeaningLikewise, hurling the warrior with his horses, the chariot and the charioteer, into her mouth, she ground them most horribly with her teeth.
ಏಕಂ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಕೇಶೇಷು ಗ್ರೀವಾಯಾಮಥ ಚಾಪರಮ್ । ಪಾದೇನಾಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ಚೈವಾನ್ಯಮುರಸಾನ್ಯಮಪೋಥಯತ್ ॥
ekaṃ jagrāha keśeṣu grīvāyāmatha cāparam pādenākramya caivānyamurasānyamapothayat
MeaningOne she seized by the hair, and another by the neck; another she crushed by trampling with her foot, and yet another against her breast.
ತೈರ್ಮುಕ್ತಾನಿ ಚ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ಮಹಾಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ತಥಾಸುರೈಃ । ಮುಖೇನ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ರುಷಾ ದಶನೈರ್ಮಥಿತಾನ್ಯಪಿ ॥
tairmuktāni ca śastrāṇi mahāstrāṇi tathāsuraiḥ mukhena jagrāha ruṣā daśanairmathitānyapi
MeaningAnd the weapons and great missiles loosed by those asuras she caught in her mouth, and in her rage crunched them with her teeth.
ಬಲಿನಾಂ ತದ್ಬಲಂ ಸರ್ವಮಸುರಾಣಾಂ ದುರಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್ । ಮಮರ್ದಾಭಕ್ಷಯಚ್ಚಾನ್ಯಾನನ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚಾತಾಡಯತ್ತದಾ ॥
balināṃ tadbalaṃ sarvamasurāṇāṃ durātmanām mamardābhakṣayaccānyānanyāṃścātāḍayattadā
MeaningShe crushed the whole army of those mighty, evil-souled asuras; some she devoured, and others she battered down.
ಅಸಿನಾ ನಿಹತಾಃ ಕೇಚಿತ್ಕೇಚಿತ್ಖಟ್ವಾಙ್ಗತಾಡಿತಾಃ । ಜಗ್ಮುರ್ವಿನಾಶಮಸುರಾ ದನ್ತಾಗ್ರಾಭಿಹತಾಸ್ತಥಾ ॥
asinā nihatāḥ kecitkecitkhaṭvāṅgatāḍitāḥ jagmurvināśamasurā dantāgrābhihatāstathā
MeaningSome were slain by her sword, some smitten by her skull-staff; and other asuras met destruction, struck by the points of her teeth.
ಕ್ಷಣೇನ ತದ್ಬಲಂ ಸರ್ವಮಸುರಾಣಾಂ ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್ । ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚಣ್ಡೋಽಭಿದುದ್ರಾವ ತಾಂ ಕಾಲೀಮತಿಭೀಷಣಾಮ್ ॥
kṣaṇena tadbalaṃ sarvamasurāṇāṃ nipātitam dṛṣṭvā caṇḍo'bhidudrāva tāṃ kālīmatibhīṣaṇām
MeaningIn a moment all that army of the asuras was laid low. Seeing this, Chanda rushed at that most terrible Kali.
ಶರವರ್ಷೈರ್ಮಹಾಭೀಮೈರ್ಭೀಮಾಕ್ಷೀಂ ತಾಂ ಮಹಾಸುರಃ । ಛಾದಯಾಮಾಸ ಚಕ್ರೈಶ್ಚ ಮುಣ್ಡಃ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತೈಃ ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ ॥
śaravarṣairmahābhīmairbhīmākṣīṃ tāṃ mahāsuraḥ chādayāmāsa cakraiśca muṇḍaḥ kṣiptaiḥ sahasraśaḥ
MeaningThe great asura Chanda covered that terrible-eyed Devi with showers of dreadful arrows, and Munda (covered her) with discuses hurled by the thousand.
ತಾನಿ ಚಕ್ರಾಣ್ಯನೇಕಾನಿ ವಿಶಮಾನಾನಿ ತನ್ಮುಖಮ್ । ಬಭುರ್ಯಥಾರ್ಕಬಿಮ್ಬಾನಿ ಸುಬಹೂನಿ ಘನೋದರಮ್ ॥
tāni cakrāṇyanekāni viśamānāni tanmukham babhuryathārkabimbāni subahūni ghanodaram
MeaningThose many discuses, entering her mouth, shone like numerous solar orbs vanishing into the midst of a cloud.
ತತೋ ಜಹಾಸಾತಿರುಷಾ ಭೀಮಂ ಭೈರವನಾದಿನೀ । ಕಾಲೀ ಕರಾಲವದನಾ ದುರ್ದರ್ಶದಶನೋಜ್ಜ್ವಲಾ ॥
tato jahāsātiruṣā bhīmaṃ bhairavanādinī kālī karālavadanā durdarśadaśanojjvalā
MeaningThen Kali — of terrible face, of fearful roar, ablaze with her dreadful-to-behold teeth — laughed aloud in great fury, a terrifying laugh.
ಉತ್ಥಾಯ ಚ ಮಹಾಸಿಂಹಂ ದೇವೀ ಚಣ್ಡಮಧಾವತ । ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಚಾಸ್ಯ ಕೇಶೇಷು ಶಿರಸ್ತೇನಾಸಿನಾಚ್ಛಿನತ್ ॥
utthāya ca mahāsiṃhaṃ devī caṇḍamadhāvata gṛhītvā cāsya keśeṣu śirastenāsinācchinat
MeaningAnd rising upon her great lion, the Devi rushed at Chanda; seizing him by the hair, she severed his head with her sword.
ಅಥ ಮುಣ್ಡೋಽಭ್ಯಧಾವತ್ತಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚಣ್ಡಂ ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್ । ತಮಪ್ಯಪಾತಯದ್ಭೂಮೌ ಸಾ ಖಡ್ಗಾಭಿಹತಂ ರುಷಾ ॥
atha muṇḍo'bhyadhāvattāṃ dṛṣṭvā caṇḍaṃ nipātitam tamapyapātayadbhūmau sā khaḍgābhihataṃ ruṣā
MeaningThen Munda rushed at her, seeing Chanda felled; him too, struck with her sword in fury, she laid low upon the ground.
ಹತಶೇಷಂ ತತಃ ಸೈನ್ಯಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚಣ್ಡಂ ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್ । ಮುಣ್ಡಂ ಚ ಸುಮಹಾವೀರ್ಯಂ ದಿಶೋ ಭೇಜೇ ಭಯಾತುರಮ್ ॥
hataśeṣaṃ tataḥ sainyaṃ dṛṣṭvā caṇḍaṃ nipātitam muṇḍaṃ ca sumahāvīryaṃ diśo bheje bhayāturam
MeaningThen the remnant of the army, seeing Chanda fallen and the most valiant Munda (slain), fled in all directions, stricken with terror.
ಶಿರಶ್ಚಣ್ಡಸ್ಯ ಕಾಲೀ ಚ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಮುಣ್ಡಮೇವ ಚ । ಪ್ರಾಹ ಪ್ರಚಣ್ಡಾಟ್ಟಹಾಸಮಿಶ್ರಮಭ್ಯೇತ್ಯ ಚಣ್ಡಿಕಾಮ್ ॥
śiraścaṇḍasya kālī ca gṛhītvā muṇḍameva ca prāha pracaṇḍāṭṭahāsamiśramabhyetya caṇḍikām
MeaningAnd Kali, taking up the head of Chanda and Munda as well, approached Chandika and said, mingling her words with a fierce, loud laugh:
ಮಯಾ ತವಾತ್ರೋಪಹೃತೌ ಚಣ್ಡಮುಣ್ಡೌ ಮಹಾಪಶೂ । ಯುದ್ಧಯಜ್ಞೇ ಸ್ವಯಂ ಶುಮ್ಭಂ ನಿಶುಮ್ಭಂ ಚ ಹನಿಷ್ಯಸಿ ॥
mayā tavātropahṛtau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāpaśū yuddhayajñe svayaṃ śumbhaṃ niśumbhaṃ ca haniṣyasi
Meaning'Here I have brought you Chanda and Munda, the two great beasts, as offerings in this sacrifice of battle; Shumbha and Nishumbha you shall slay yourself.'
ಋಷಿರುವಾಚ ತಾವಾನೀತೌ ತತೋ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚಣ್ಡಮುಣ್ಡೌ ಮಹಾಸುರೌ । ಉವಾಚ ಕಾಲೀಂ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣೀ ಲಲಿತಂ ಚಣ್ಡಿಕಾ ವಚಃ ॥
ṛṣiruvāca tāvānītau tato dṛṣṭvā caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau uvāca kālīṃ kalyāṇī lalitaṃ caṇḍikā vacaḥ
Meaning(The Rishi said:) Then, seeing those two great asuras Chanda and Munda brought before her, the auspicious Chandika spoke this graceful word to Kali:
ಯಸ್ಮಾಚ್ಚಣ್ಡಂ ಚ ಮುಣ್ಡಂ ಚ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ತ್ವಮುಪಾಗತಾ । ಚಾಮುಣ್ಡೇತಿ ತತೋ ಲೋಕೇ ಖ್ಯಾತಾ ದೇವೀ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ ॥
yasmāccaṇḍaṃ ca muṇḍaṃ ca gṛhītvā tvamupāgatā cāmuṇḍeti tato loke khyātā devī bhaviṣyasi
Meaning'Because you have come having seized Chanda (Chanda) and Munda, you, O Devi, shall therefore be renowned in the world as Chamunda.'
