The Moon moves ~1 nakshatra/day, so give the birth time as accurately as you can.

What is your Janma Nakshatra?

In Vedic astrology the sky is divided into 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions). The nakshatra the Moon occupies at your birth is your Janma Nakshatra — the basis of temperament, naming, muhurta and kundli matching. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet and a presiding deity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Janma Nakshatra?

Your Janma Nakshatra is the nakshatra (one of the 27 lunar mansions) that the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. It is the foundation of Vedic astrology — it shapes your deep temperament and is used for naming, muhurta and kundli matching.

How accurate is this, and do I need the birth time?

The Moon travels through about one nakshatra per day, so the birth time matters — especially near a boundary. This calculator uses the Moon's sidereal (Lahiri) position, the same engine that powers our panchang. Give the time as accurately as you can; if unknown, noon is used as an estimate.

What is the difference between Rashi and Nakshatra?

Your Rashi (Moon sign) is one of 12 zodiac signs the Moon was in; your Nakshatra is one of 27 finer lunar mansions. Each sign contains about 2¼ nakshatras. Both are based on the Moon's position at birth, not the Sun.
