Gudi Padwa & Ugadi Mantras — Hindu New Year Prayers

Gudi Padwa (गुड़ी पड़वा), known as Ugadi in the South, is the Hindu New Year (Hindu Nav Varsh), falling on the first day of Chaitra Shukla Paksha — the same day Brahma is said to have created the universe and the day Chaitra Navratri begins. Families raise the Gudi (a festive flag) for victory and prosperity. These are the mantras for the New Year.

Ganesh & Brahma Vandana

Begin the New Year with the Ganesh Mantra and a prayer to Brahma, the creator, on the day creation is said to have begun.

Ganesh Mantra

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः

Gayatri Mantra — Light for the Year

Chant the Gayatri Mantra at sunrise on Gudi Padwa to invoke the light of wisdom and an auspicious start to the new year.

Gayatri Mantra

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः

Durga Chalisa — Chaitra Navratri Begins

Gudi Padwa is the first day of Chaitra Navratri. Recite the Durga Chalisa to begin the nine days of the Mother's worship.

Durga Chalisa

नमो नमो दुर्गे सुख करनी । नमो नमो दुर्गे दुःख हरनी ॥

Ram & Vishnu Prayers

The Chaitra Navratri that begins on this day culminates in Ram Navami. Recite the Ram Chalisa and Vishnu Chalisa for a year of dharma and prosperity.

Ram Chalisa

श्री रघुबीर भक्त हितकारी।

Vishnu Chalisa

विष्णु सुनिए विनय, सेवक की चितलाय।

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Gudi Padwa / Ugadi 2026?
Gudi Padwa and Ugadi in 2026 fall in late March, on the first day (Pratipada) of Chaitra Shukla Paksha — the start of the Hindu lunar New Year and of Chaitra Navratri.
Which mantra to chant on Hindu New Year?
Begin with the Ganesh Mantra, chant the Gayatri Mantra at sunrise, and recite the Durga Chalisa (as Chaitra Navratri begins). Many also recite the Ram Chalisa and Vishnu Chalisa and read the new year's panchang (Panchang Shravan).
How is Gudi Padwa celebrated?
Homes are cleaned and decorated with rangoli and a Gudi — a bright cloth tied to a bamboo with a garland and an inverted pot — is raised at the doorway for victory and prosperity. Families take an oil bath, worship the deities, eat neem-jaggery (symbolising life's bitter and sweet), read the new panchang, and begin new ventures.
Why is Gudi Padwa considered auspicious for new beginnings?
It is the Hindu New Year and, by tradition, the day Brahma created the universe and Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya. It is one of the three-and-a-half most auspicious muhurats of the year, so new homes, businesses and ventures are begun on this day for lasting success.
