Lord Surya (the Sun God) is the visible deity, the source of life, health and vitality. This is the complete step-by-step guide for performing Surya Puja and offering Arghya at home — for Sunday worship, Chhath, Makar Sankranti, or daily Surya Namaskar. Follow this vidhi for health, energy and success.

Puja Samagri (Materials Required)

A copper vessel (lota) for Arghya
Clean water + red flowers, akshata and roli
Red flowers (especially hibiscus / red lotus)
Roli (red), kumkum, akshata
Jaggery and wheat (for offerings)
Copper Surya idol or photo (optional)
Ghee or sesame-oil diya
Incense and camphor
Fruits and sweets

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1

Wake before sunrise & bathe

Surya puja is done at sunrise. Wake during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Face East, toward the rising Sun.

2

Fill the Arghya vessel

Fill a copper lota with clean water and add red flowers, a little roli (red powder) and akshata (rice). Copper and red are sacred to Surya.

3

Offer Arghya to the Sun

Stand facing the rising Sun, raise the lota with both hands to forehead height, and pour the water in a thin stream so the sunlight passes through it. Look at the Sun through the falling water.

4

Chant the Surya Mantra

While offering Arghya, chant "Om Suryaya Namah", "Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah", and the Gayatri Mantra (which is addressed to Savitr, the Sun).

5

Surya Namaskar

Perform Surya Namaskar (sun salutations), chanting the twelve names of the Sun — "Om Mitraya Namah", "Om Ravaye Namah" … — one with each round.

6

Path & Stotra

Recite the Aditya Hridaya Stotra (the hymn by which Rama won), the Surya Chalisa, and sing the Surya Aarti.

7

Offerings & Prarthana

Offer red flowers, jaggery, wheat and fruits. Light a diya and incense. Pray to Surya for health, vitality, confidence and success, and donate wheat and jaggery.
