Ayyappa Puja Vidhi & 41-Day Vratham
अय्यप्पा पूजा विधि
Lord Ayyappa — Hariharaputra — is the son of Shiva (Hara) and Vishnu in the form of Mohini (Hari), enshrined at Sabarimala in Kerala. A celibate warrior-yogi seated in meditation, he is famed for the great 41-day vratham his devotees observe before the pilgrimage. This is the step-by-step Ayyappa puja vidhi and an outline of the Mandala vratham.

Sthapana & Deepam
Place the Ayyappa idol/photo and light a ghee lamp (deepam) — the central act of Ayyappa worship. Light incense.
Dhyana & Saranam
Meditate on Ayyappa seated in yoga and chant the Saranam — "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" — offering yourself at his feet.
Shringar & Offerings
Apply vibhuti and chandan, offer flowers and a garland, then coconut, jaggery, fruit and rice as naivedya.
Mantra & Path
Chant "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" continuously; honour his fathers with "Om Namah Shivaya" (Hara) and the Vishnu Sahasranama (Hari). Devotees sing the Harivarasanam at the end.
Deeparadhana (Aarti)
Perform the lamp aarti with the bell, calling "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa". Distribute vibhuti and prasad.

Important Tips
The constant chant is "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" — total surrender ("saranam") is the heart of Ayyappa bhakti.
The 41-day Mandala vratham: wear black/blue and a rudraksha/tulsi mala, take cold baths, eat simple satvik food, observe celibacy and treat everyone as "Ayyappa" (Swami).
The pilgrim carries the irumudi (offering bundle, with the ghee-filled coconut) on the head to Sabarimala — without it one cannot climb the 18 holy steps.
Sing the Harivarasanam (the lullaby) as the closing prayer — it is sung nightly to put the Lord to rest at Sabarimala.
