Important Tips

💡

The constant chant is "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" — total surrender ("saranam") is the heart of Ayyappa bhakti.

💡

The 41-day Mandala vratham: wear black/blue and a rudraksha/tulsi mala, take cold baths, eat simple satvik food, observe celibacy and treat everyone as "Ayyappa" (Swami).

💡

The pilgrim carries the irumudi (offering bundle, with the ghee-filled coconut) on the head to Sabarimala — without it one cannot climb the 18 holy steps.

💡

Sing the Harivarasanam (the lullaby) as the closing prayer — it is sung nightly to put the Lord to rest at Sabarimala.
