माँ गंगा Mantras

The sacred river goddess, purifier of all sins.

Maa Ganga — the sacred river goddess — is the holiest of rivers, descended from the heavens through the matted locks of Lord Shiva to purify the earth. A single drop of her water, or even the utterance of her name, is said to wash away sins and grant liberation. She is worshipped at the ghats of Haridwar, Rishikesh, Prayagraj and Kashi with the famous Ganga Aarti. Her aarti and chalisa follow.

Maa Ganga (Goddess Ganga) Mantras — Frequently Asked Questions

The simple mantra is "Om Namo Gangayai Namah" or "Har Har Gange". Devotees also recite the Ganga Chalisa and sing the Ganga Aarti ("Om Jai Gange Mata") at the river ghats, and chant "Gange cha Yamune chaiva..." while bathing to invoke all the sacred rivers.
The Ganga is believed to flow from the feet of Lord Vishnu and to descend through Shiva's locks; she purifies the sins of all who bathe in her or remember her. Performing the last rites and immersing ashes in the Ganga is held to grant the departed liberation (moksha).
Ganga Dussehra (the day of her descent to earth) and Kartik Purnima are her greatest days, along with Ganga Saptami and Makar Sankranti at Prayagraj. Bathing in the Ganga on these days, and offering the evening aarti, is considered especially purifying.
