Traditional Tirumala (TTD) devotional chant — Sri Venkateswara Govinda Namavali · Traditional · Devotional / traditional

The cry of "Govinda! Govinda!" is the eternal call of the pilgrims of Tirumala. This litany of 108 names gathers the glories of Lord Venkateswara — His incarnations, His weapons and ornaments, His abode on the seven hills, and His tender care for devotees — into a single rolling chant answered by the refrain "Govinda, Hari Govinda." It is sung as devotees climb the hills and stand before the Lord, and is recited daily at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam.

✦ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ

It is said on the hills of Tirumala that the Lord answers to no sound more readily than the cry of "Govinda!" — that to call His name even once with love is to be heard, and to chant these 108 names is to be drawn into His unfailing protection.

ಅರ್ಥ:Glory to Govinda! Sri Srinivasa, Lord of Venkata hill; loving to His devotees and dear to the Bhagavatas; ever-pure, dark as a rain-cloud, the ancient Being, the lotus-eyed. Govinda, Hari Govinda; Gokula-nandana Govinda! The son of Nanda, the butter-thief, the cowherd Lord, the liberator from sin, the destroyer of the wicked and the remover of sorrows; the protector of the good. Through 108 names the chant calls upon Him across all His forms — Rama and Krishna, the ten incarnations, the lifter of Govardhana, the slayer of Ravana, the Lord of the seven hills, the rescuer of Gajendra, the consort of Lakshmi and Padmavati, the dweller of Tirumala who reclines on Shesha — ending as it began, with Sri Srinivasa, Sri Venkatesa. Sing each name aloud and answer with the refrain "Govinda! Hari Govinda! Gokula-nandana Govinda!" after every group of names, as devotees do on the hills of Tirumala. It may be chanted alone or in a group, while walking, or before an image of Lord Venkateswara (Balaji). Begin and end with "Sri Srinivasa Govinda, Sri Venkatesa Govinda," and close with Om Shanti. No special qualification is needed — only love for the Lord.

Govinda Namalu (also called Govinda Namavali) is a devotional litany of 108 names of Lord Venkateswara, the Govinda of Tirumala (Tirupati Balaji). Each name praises one of His qualities or incarnations and is followed by the joyful refrain "Govinda! Hari Govinda!" It is the chant heard everywhere on the seven hills of Tirumala.
There are 108 names. They begin and end with "Sri Srinivasa Govinda, Sri Venkatesa Govinda," and after every eight names the refrain "Govinda Hari Govinda, Gokula Nandana Govinda" is sung. The chant closes with "Om Shanti Shanti Shantih."
It is chanted by pilgrims during the darshan of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala and in TTD, while climbing the seven hills, and in daily worship. It is believed to remove sins and troubles and to bring the Lord’s grace, and is loved because anyone can sing it with devotion, without any special qualification.
