The Dakshinamurti Ashtakam is traditionally ascribed to Vrishabhadeva. Eight verses to Dakshinamurti — Shiva as the supreme silent Guru, the youthful teacher who imparts the highest knowledge of the Self through silence to the aged sages at His feet.

அகணிதகுணகணமப்ரமேமாத்யம் ஸகலஜகத்ஸ்திதிஸம்யமாதிஹேதும் । உபரதமநோயோகிஹ்ரு'ந்மந்திரம்தம் ஸததமஹம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்திமீடே ॥ ௧॥ நிரவதிஸுகமிஷ்டதாதாரமீட்யம் நதஜநமநஸ்தாபபேதைகதக்ஷம் । பவவிபிநதவாக்நிநாமதேயம் ஸததமஹம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்திமீடே ॥ ௨॥ த்ரிபுவநகுருமாகமைகப்ரமாணம் த்ரிஜகத்காரணஸூத்ரயோகமாயம் । ரவிஶதபாஸ்வரமீஹிதப்ரதாநம் ஸததமஹம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்திமீடே ॥ ௩॥ அவிரதபவபாவநாதிதூரம் பதபத்மத்வயபாவிநாமதூரம் । பவஜலதிஸுதாரணமங்க்ரிபோதம் ஸததமஹம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்திமீடே ॥ ௪॥ க்ரு'தநிலயமநிஶம் வடாகமூலே நிகமஶிகாவ்ராதபோதிதைகரூபம் । த்ரு'தமுத்ராங்குளிகம்யசாருரூபம் ஸததமஹம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்திமீடே ॥ ௫॥ த்ருஹிணஸுதபூஜிதாங்க்ரிபத்மம் பதபத்மாநதமோக்ஷதாநதக்ஷம் । க்ரு'தகுருகுலவாஸயோகிமித்ரம் ஸததமஹம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்திமீடே ॥ ௬॥ யதிவரஹ்ரு'தயே ஸதா விபாந்தம் ரதிபதிஶதகோடிஸுந்தராங்கமாத்யம் । பரஹிதநிரதாத்மநம் ஸுஸேவ்யம் ஸததமஹம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்திமீடே ॥ ௭॥ ஸ்மிததவளவிகாஸிதாநநாப்ஜம் ஶ்ருதிஸுலபம் வ்ரு'ஷபாதிரூடகாத்ரம் । ஸிதஜலஜஸுஶோபிதேஹகாந்திம் ஸததமஹம் தக்ஷிணாமூர்திமீடே ॥ ௮॥ வ்ரு'ஷபக்ரு'தமிதமிஷ்டஸித்திதம் குருவரதேவஸந்நிதௌ படேத்யஃ । ஸகலதுரிததுஃகவர்கஹாநிம் வ்ரஜதி சிரம் ஜ்ஞாநவாந் ஶம்புலோகம் ॥ ௯॥ இதி ஶ்ரீவ்ற்^ஷபதேவவிரசிதம் ஶ்ரீதக்ஷிணாமூர்த்யஷ்டகம் ஸம்பூர்ணம் ।
agaṇitaguṇagaṇamapramemādyaṃ sakalajagatsthitisamyamādihetum | uparatamanoyogihṛnmandiramtaṃ satatamahaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe || 1|| niravadhisukhamiṣṭadātāramīḍyaṃ natajanamanastāpabhedaikadakṣam | bhavavipinadavāgnināmadheyaṃ satatamahaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe || 2|| tribhuvanagurumāgamaikapramāṇaṃ trijagatkāraṇasūtrayogamāyam | raviśatabhāsvaramīhitapradhānaṃ satatamahaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe || 3|| aviratabhavabhāvanādidūraṃ padapadmadvayabhāvināmadūram | bhavajaladhisutāraṇamaṅghripotaṃ satatamahaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe || 4|| kṛtanilayamaniśaṃ vaṭākamūle nigamaśikhāvrātabodhitaikarūpam | dhṛtamudrāṅgul̤igamyacārurūpaṃ satatamahaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe || 5|| druhiṇasutapūjitāṅghripadmaṃ padapadmānatamokṣadānadakṣam | kṛtagurukulavāsayogimitraṃ satatamahaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe || 6|| yativarahṛdaye sadā vibhāntaṃ ratipatiśatakoṭisundarāṅgamādyam | parahitaniratātmanaṃ susevyaṃ satatamahaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe || 7|| smitadhaval̤avikāsitānanābjaṃ śrutisulabhaṃ vṛṣabhādhirūḍhagātram | sitajalajasuśobhidehakāntiṃ satatamahaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe || 8|| vṛṣabhakṛtamidamiṣṭasiddhidaṃ guruvaradevasannidhau paṭhedyaḥ | sakaladuritaduḥkhavargahāniṃ vrajati ciraṃ jñānavān śambhulokam || 9|| iti śrīvṟ^ṣabhadevaviracitaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtyaṣṭakaṃ sampūrṇam |

Dakshinamurti Ashtakam பாராயண முறை
Bathe and sit facing east or north before an image of the deity. Light a lamp and recite the Dakshinamurti Ashtakam slowly and with devotion. It may be chanted daily, or especially during Maha Shivaratri, Pradosh and the month of Shravan. Conclude with a prayer for grace and protection.
