Chapter Summary

Stung by the Devi's reply, Shumbha sends the demon-general Dhumralochana with sixty thousand asuras to seize her by force. When he threatens to drag her by the hair, the Goddess reduces him to ashes with a single syllable 'hum'. Her lion then falls upon his huge army and annihilates it in a moment, tearing the asuras apart with claw and fang. Hearing of Dhumralochana's death and the destruction of his host, the enraged Shumbha dispatches the great asuras Chanda and Munda to capture or kill her.

Dhyāna — Opening Meditation

I meditate on the supreme Padmavati, seated upon the king of serpents, her creeper-like body gleaming with the rows of gems on the great serpent-hoods, radiant as the sun and lit by her three eyes, bearing in her hands a garland, a pitcher, a skull and a lotus, crowned with the half-moon, who dwells in the body of Bhairava, the lord of the all-knowing.
