Origin & Story

Vinaya Patrika of Goswami Tulsidas · Goswami Tulsidas · 16th century CE

This stuti is drawn from the Vinaya Patrika ('Petition of Humility') of Goswami Tulsidas, the great devotee-poet of Rama. In a handful of luminous verses he beholds Rama as the lotus-eyed Lord, the son of Dasharatha and slayer of demons, and makes the humble prayer that the Lord come to dwell in the lotus of his heart and destroy the inner foes of desire. It has become one of the most-sung praises of Rama in the Hindi-speaking world.

✦ As told in scripture

Devotees hold that this stuti, ending in the prayer 'make your dwelling in the lotus of my heart', steadies the mind and removes fear at once; the rendition by Lata Mangeshkar is cherished as itself a form of darshan of the lotus-eyed Lord.
