Complete Translation

Bowing with love at the lotus-feet of Shri Ganapati and the Guru, I recite the Navgrah Chalisa; may Sharada (Saraswati) come to my aid. Victory to Ravi (Sun), Shashi (Moon), Budh (Mercury); victory to Guru (Jupiter), Bhrigu (Venus) and King Shani (Saturn); victory to Rahu and Ketu — may all the planets show their grace today. First I bow my head to Ravi, the Sun — show grace, knowing me as helpless. O Aditya, Divakar, Bhanu — I am dull of mind and deeply ignorant; now remove your devotee's afflictions, O Dinkar of twelve forms, lord of day. Salutations to Bhaskar, Surya, Prabhakar, Arka, Mitra — forgiver who destroys sin. O Moon — Shashi, Mayank, lord of the night, master; Chandra, ocean of digits — I bow again and again. Lord of the full moon, Himanshu, Rakesha — at your devotee's prayer remove his body's afflictions. Soma, Indu, Vidhu, giver of peace and nectar, of cool rays, herb-lord, the night-maker; you adorn the fair brow of Mahesha — I take refuge, remove your devotee's afflictions. Victory, victory to Mangal (Mars), giver of joy, the red one renowned as Bhauma; Angarak, Kuja, remover of disease and debt — show this mercy, this is our prayer. O son of the Earth, treasure of joy, red-limbed, victory — destroyer of the devotee's sins; now remove the gravest misfortune and fulfil every wish. Victory to Budh (Mercury), the Moon's son, great king — accomplish auspicious works for all. Grant intellect, strength, fine discernment and wisdom; remove hard suffering and bring welfare. O son of Tara, delight of Rohini, child of the Moon, destroyer of the pairs of sorrow — your servants worship in hope; O protector of the humble, salutations. Victory, victory to Shri Gurudeva (Jupiter) — ever may I serve you, O Lord. Preceptor of the gods, the wise Devaguru, Indra's priest, giver of knowledge; Vachaspati, lord of speech, generous one — Jiva and Brihaspati are your names. Ocean of learning, named Angira — fulfil my every aim in full. The devotee ever meditates on the nectar at the soles of Shukra Dev's (Venus's) feet. O Ushanas, Bhargava, son of Bhrigu, priest of the daityas, destroyer of the wicked; ornament of the Bhrigu line, remover of faults — quell the malefic planets and bring joy. You are the crown of the twice-born and of astrologers; you alone are king over the human body. Victory to Shri Shani Dev, son of Ravi; victory to the dark Sauri, adored by the world. Pingala, Manda, Raudra, Yama by name; foremost, corner-dwelling, the adorned. Of crooked gaze and peepal-form — in an instant you make a pauper, in an instant a king; worship at your golden feet brings bliss — O son of Chhaya, remove my calamity. Victory, victory to Rahu, who pervades the sky; you are the seizer of the Moon and the Sun. Foe of Sun and Moon, Svarbhanu, Shikhi and many names are yours. Saimhikeya, king of the night-rangers, of half a body — keep the honour of the world; when you come into your period in time, ever bring forth peace and happiness. Victory to Shri Ketu, remover of hard sorrow — do good and bring auspiciousness to the virtuous. Banner-bearing, of fearsome headless form, dark of dread fierce body; Shikhi, the strong star-planet, of measureless might and splendour. Your mount is the fish, most auspicious — grant peace, holding mercy in your heart. At holy Prayag dwells a fair servant of Rama — in the village of Kakra-pure, of the Tiwari family, at the hermitage of Durvasa, remover of people's sorrow. He has written this Navgrah Shanti for the welfare of all, a bridge to lift the afflictions of body and mind. Whoever recites it daily with a focused heart enjoys every happiness and attains the supreme state. Blessed are the nine planetary gods, O Lord — boundless and unfathomable is their glory; ever-new auspiciousness and joy in the home, the door of happiness for the people of the world. This Navgrah Chalisa was composed by Sundardas; reciting it with love, joy increases and all-bliss and delight arise.

Origin & History

Source: Traditional Hindi devotional chalisa

Author: Sundardas

Period: Devotional era

In Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) the nine grahas — the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — govern the fortunes of every life, and their malefic placements bring the trials known as graha dosha. The Navgrah Chalisa, composed by the poet Sundardas, praises each of the nine planets in turn with their names and powers, and prays for graha shanti — the peace and grace of all nine at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Navgrah Chalisa?
The Navgrah Chalisa is a Hindi devotional hymn that praises all nine planetary deities (Navagraha) — Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu — in turn, and prays for graha shanti, the pacification of malefic planetary influence in one's horoscope.
What are the benefits of reciting the Navgrah Chalisa?
It is recited as a single, complete remedy for planetary afflictions — Sade Sati, Shani dosha, Rahu-Ketu and Mangal dosha, and weak benefics — to remove obstacles, debts, disease and the hardships of an adverse dasha, and to bring peace, success and steady fortune.
When should the Navgrah Chalisa be recited?
It may be recited daily, and is especially powerful on Saturdays and Amavasya, during Navagraha puja, or through a difficult planetary period (dasha/antardasha). Lighting nine lamps before a Navagraha shrine enhances the worship.
Who are the Navagraha (nine planets)?
The nine grahas are Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Brihaspati/Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu and Ketu (the two lunar nodes). In Vedic astrology their placement governs the fortunes of a person's life.
