Understanding the Panchang
Tithi — the lunar day, based on the angle between the Moon and the Sun — there are 30 in a lunar month.
Vara — the weekday, each ruled by a planet.
Nakshatra — the lunar mansion — which of the 27 segments of the sky the Moon occupies.
Yoga — one of 27 combinations based on the joint motion of the Sun and Moon.
Karana — half of a tithi; each tithi contains two karanas.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Panchang?
The Panchang is the Hindu daily almanac. It records the five limbs (panch-anga) of the day — Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga and Karana. Auspicious timings, vrats and festivals are all determined from it.
What is Rahu Kaal and why avoid it?
Rahu Kaal is a period of the day considered inauspicious — one of the eight equal parts between sunrise and sunset, varying by weekday. New or important undertakings are traditionally avoided during it.
What is Abhijit Muhurat?
Abhijit Muhurat is the most auspicious window of the day, falling around local solar noon. It is considered excellent for starting new work, when no other muhurat is available.
What is Choghadiya?
Choghadiya is a simple muhurat system that divides the day and the night into eight parts each. Amrit, Shubh and Labh choghadiyas are best for auspicious work; Char is neutral (good for travel); while Rog, Kaal and Udveg are considered inauspicious and are avoided.
Which location is this Panchang for?
It is computed for the sunrise at New Delhi, India, in Indian Standard Time (IST). The tithi and nakshatra are nearly the same across India, while sunrise and the muhurat timings shift slightly by location.
