Verse 1
ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचन्द्रावतंसं रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम् । पद्मासीनं समन्तात् स्तुतममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृत्तिं वसानं विश्वाद्यं विश्ववन्द्यं निखिलभयहरं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिनेत्रम् ॥
Dhyayennityam mahesham rajatagirinibham charuchandravatamsam Ratnakalpojjvalangam parashumrigavarabhitihastam prasannam Padmasinam samantat stutamamaraganairvyaghrakrittim vasanam Vishvadyam vishvavandyam nikhilabhayaharam panchavaktram trinetram
Ever meditate on Mahesha — radiant as a silver mountain, crowned with the lovely crescent moon, His limbs ablaze with jewelled ornaments, His hands bearing the axe, the deer, the boon-gesture and the gesture of fearlessness, serene; seated in the lotus posture, praised on every side by the host of immortals, clad in a tiger-skin; the origin of the universe, adored by the universe, remover of every fear, five-faced and three-eyed.
Verse 2
उपमन्युरुवाच — ब्रह्मप्रोक्तैरृषिप्रोक्तैर्वेदवेदाङ्गसम्भवैः । सर्वलोकेषु विख्यातं स्तुत्यं स्तोष्यामि नामभिः ॥ महद्भिर्विहितैः सत्यैः सिद्धैः सर्वार्थसाधकैः । ऋषिणा तण्डिना भक्त्या कृतैर्वेदकृतात्मना ॥
Upamanyuruvacha — Brahmaproktairrishiproktairvedavedangasambhavaih Sarvalokeshu vikhyatam stutyam stoshyami namabhih Mahadbhirvihitaih satyaih siddhaih sarvarthasadhakaih Rishina tandina bhaktya kritairvedakritatmana
Upamanyu said: With the names spoken by Brahma and by the sages, arising from the Vedas and their limbs, renowned in all the worlds and worthy of praise, I shall praise Him — names ordained by the great, true and perfect, fulfilling every aim, composed in devotion by the sage Tandi whose very Self was shaped by the Veda.
Verse 3
॥ अथ शिवसहस्रनामस्तोत्रम् ॥
Atha shivasahasranamastotram
Now begins the recitation of the thousand names of Shiva.
Verse 4
स्थिरः स्थाणुः प्रभुर्भीमः प्रवरो वरदो वरः । सर्वात्मा सर्वविख्यातः सर्वः सर्वकरो भवः ॥ १॥
Sthirah sthanuh prabhurbhimah pravaro varado varah Sarvatma sarvavikhyatah sarvah sarvakaro bhavah
The firm and steadfast (Sthira), the immovable pillar (Sthanu), the Lord, the terrible Bhima, the foremost and best, the giver of boons; the Self of all, renowned everywhere, the All (Sarva), the doer of all, Bhava the source of existence.
Verse 5
जटी चर्मी शिखी खड्गी सर्वाङ्गः सर्वभावनः । हरश्च हरिणाक्षश्च सर्वभूतहरः प्रभुः ॥ २॥
Jati charmi shikhi khadgi sarvangah sarvabhavanah Harashcha harinakshashcha sarvabhutaharah prabhuh
Bearing matted hair, deer-skin and crest, holding the sword; whole of limb, the creator of all states of being; Hara the dissolver, the deer-eyed, who withdraws all beings, the Lord.
Verse 6
प्रवृत्तिश्च निवृत्तिश्च नियतः शाश्वतो ध्रुवः । श्मशानवासी भगवान्खचरो गोचरोऽर्दनः ॥ ३॥
Pravrittishcha nivrittishcha niyatah shashvato dhruvah Shmashanavasi bhagavankhacharo gocharordanah
He who is engagement (pravritti) and withdrawal (nivritti), the regulated, the eternal, the ever-fixed; dweller in the cremation ground, the Lord, moving in the sky, moving on earth, the destroyer of foes.
Verse 7
अभिवाद्यो महाकर्मा तपस्वी भूतभावनः । उन्मत्तवेषप्रच्छन्नः सर्वलोकप्रजापतिः ॥ ४॥
Abhivadyo mahakarma tapasvi bhutabhavanah Unmattaveshaprachchhannah sarvalokaprajapatih
Worthy of salutation, of mighty deeds, the great ascetic, the source of beings; concealed in a mad guise (avadhuta), the lord of all the worlds' creatures.
Verse 8
महारूपो महाकायो वृषरूपो महायशाः । महात्मा सर्वभूतात्मा विश्वरूपो महाहनुः ॥ ५॥
Maharupo mahakayo vrisharupo mahayashah Mahatma sarvabhutatma vishvarupo mahahanuh
Of vast form and vast body, bull-formed, of great fame; the great Self, the soul of all beings, of universal form, of mighty jaw.
Verse 9
लोकपालोऽन्तर्हितात्मा प्रसादो हयगर्दभिः । पवित्रं च महांश्चैव नियमो नियमाश्रितः ॥ ६॥
Lokapalontarhitatma prasado hayagardabhih Pavitram cha mahamshchaiva niyamo niyamashritah
Guardian of the worlds, the hidden indwelling Self, grace itself, drawn by horse and mule; the purifier, the great one, restraint itself, abiding in discipline.
Verse 10
सर्वकर्मा स्वयम्भूत आदिरादिकरो निधिः । सहस्राक्षो विशालाक्षः सोमो नक्षत्रसाधकः ॥ ७॥
Sarvakarma svayambhuta adiradikaro nidhih Sahasraksho vishalakshah somo nakshatrasadhakah
Doer of all deeds, self-existent, the first, the first cause, the treasure; the thousand-eyed, wide-eyed, the moon (Soma), the perfecter of the constellations.
Verse 11
चन्द्रः सूर्यः शनिः केतुर्ग्रहो ग्रहपतिर्वरः । अत्रिरत्र्यानमस्कर्ता मृगबाणार्पणोऽनघः ॥ ८॥
Chandrah suryah shanih keturgraho grahapatirvarah Atriratryanamaskarta mrigabanarpanonaghah
The moon, the sun, Saturn, Ketu, the planet and the lord of planets, the boon-giver; the sage Atri and the one saluted by Atri's wife, who took the deer-mark, the sinless one.
Verse 12
महातपा घोरतपा अदीनो दीनसाधकः । संवत्सरकरो मन्त्रः प्रमाणं परमं तपः ॥ ९॥
Mahatapa ghoratapa adino dinasadhakah Samvatsarakaro mantrah pramanam paramam tapah
Of great austerity and fierce austerity, the un-depressed who uplifts the lowly; maker of the year, the sacred Mantra, the measure of all, the supreme penance.
Verse 13
योगी योज्यो महाबीजो महारेता महाबलः । सुवर्णरेताः सर्वज्ञः सुबीजो बीजवाहनः ॥ १०॥
Yogi yojyo mahabijo mahareta mahabalah Suvarnaretah sarvajnah subijo bijavahanah
The yogi, the goal of union, of mighty seed and mighty virility, of great strength; of golden seed, the all-knowing, of auspicious seed, the bearer of the seed.
Verse 14
दशबाहुस्त्वनिमिषो नीलकण्ठ उमापतिः । विश्वरूपः स्वयंश्रेष्ठो बलवीरो बलो गणः ॥ ११॥
Dashabahustvanimisho nilakantha umapatih Vishvarupah svayamshreshtho balaviro balo ganah
Ten-armed, unwinking, the blue-throated (Nilakantha), the Lord of Uma; of universal form, supreme of His own accord, mighty and heroic, strength itself, the lord of hosts (Gana).
Verse 15
गणकर्ता गणपतिर्दिग्वासाः काम एव च । मन्त्रवित्परमो मन्त्रः सर्वभावकरो हरः ॥ १२॥
Ganakarta ganapatirdigvasah kama eva cha Mantravitparamo mantrah sarvabhavakaro harah
Maker and lord of the Ganas, sky-clad (Digvasa), and Desire (Kama) itself; the knower of mantra, the supreme Mantra, maker of every state of being, Hara.
Verse 16
कमण्डलुधरो धन्वी बाणहस्तः कपालवान् । अशनी शतघ्नी खड्गी पट्टिशी चायुधी महान् ॥ १३॥
Kamandaludharo dhanvi banahastah kapalavan Ashani shataghni khadgi pattishi chayudhi mahan
Bearing the water-pot, the bow, arrows in hand, and the skull; armed with thunderbolt, the Shataghni, sword and spear — the great wielder of weapons.
Verse 17
स्रुवहस्तः सुरूपश्च तेजस्तेजस्करो निधिः । उष्णीषी च सुवक्त्रश्च उदग्रो विनतस्तथा ॥ १४॥
Sruvahastah surupashcha tejastejaskaro nidhih Ushnishi cha suvaktrashcha udagro vinatastatha
Holding the sacrificial ladle, of beautiful form, radiance and maker of radiance, the treasure; turbaned, of fair face, lofty and humble alike.
Verse 18
दीर्घश्च हरिकेशश्च सुतीर्थः कृष्ण एव च । शृगालरूपः सिद्धार्थो मुण्डः सर्वशुभङ्करः ॥ १५॥
Dirghashcha harikeshashcha sutirthah krishna eva cha Shrigalarupah siddhartho mundah sarvashubhankarah
The tall, the tawny-haired, of holy fords, and Krishna (the dark); of jackal-form, of accomplished aim, shaven-headed, the doer of all good (Sarva-shubhankara).
Verse 19
अजश्च बहुरूपश्च गन्धधारी कपर्द्यपि । ऊर्ध्वरेता ऊर्ध्वलिङ्ग ऊर्ध्वशायी नभःस्थलः ॥ १६॥
Ajashcha bahurupashcha gandhadhari kapardyapi Urdhvareta urdhvalinga urdhvashayi nabhahsthalah
The unborn, of manifold forms, fragrance-bearing, of the matted lock (Kapardi); of upward-drawn seed, the upward emblem, sleeping upward, dwelling in the sky.
Verse 20
त्रिजटी चीरवासाश्च रुद्रः सेनापतिर्विभुः । अहश्चरो नक्तञ्चरस्तिग्ममन्युः सुवर्चसः ॥ १७॥
Trijati chiravasashcha rudrah senapatirvibhuh Ahashcharo naktancharastigmamanyuh suvarchasah
Of three matted locks, clad in rags, Rudra, the commander of armies, the all-pervading; ranging by day and by night, of fierce wrath yet of brilliant splendour.
Verse 21
गजहा दैत्यहा कालो लोकधाता गुणाकरः । सिंहशार्दूलरूपश्च आर्द्रचर्माम्बरावृतः ॥ १८॥
Gajaha daityaha kalo lokadhata gunakarah Simhashardularupashcha ardracharmambaravritah
Slayer of the elephant-demon and of the daityas, Time itself, sustainer of the worlds, the mine of virtues; lion- and tiger-formed, wrapped in a fresh hide.
Verse 22
कालयोगी महानादः सर्वकामश्चतुष्पथः । निशाचरः प्रेतचारी भूतचारी महेश्वरः ॥ १९॥
Kalayogi mahanadah sarvakamashchatushpathah Nishacharah pretachari bhutachari maheshvarah
The yogi of the aeon, of mighty roar, fulfiller of all desire, of the four paths; ranging in the night, moving among spirits and ghosts, Maheshvara the great Lord.
Verse 23
बहुभूतो बहुधरः स्वर्भानुरमितो गतिः । नृत्यप्रियो नित्यनर्तो नर्तकः सर्वलालसः ॥ २०॥
Bahubhuto bahudharah svarbhanuramito gatih Nrityapriyo nityanarto nartakah sarvalalasah
Of manifold forms, bearing all, the eclipse-light (Svarbhanu), of measureless gait; fond of dance, ever dancing, the dancer, eager for all.
Verse 24
घोरो महातपाः पाशो नित्यो गिरिरुहो नभः । सहस्रहस्तो विजयो व्यवसायो ह्यतन्द्रितः ॥ २१॥
Ghoro mahatapah pasho nityo giriruho nabhah Sahasrahasto vijayo vyavasayo hyatandritah
The terrible, the great ascetic, the noose (Pasha), the eternal, born of the mountain, vast as the sky; of a thousand hands, the victor, resolute effort, the untiring.
Verse 25
अधर्षणो धर्षणात्मा यज्ञहा कामनाशकः । दक्षयागापहारी च सुसहो मध्यमस्तथा ॥ २२॥
Adharshano dharshanatma yajnaha kamanashakah Dakshayagapahari cha susaho madhyamastatha
The unassailable yet the assailing Self, destroyer of (Daksha's) sacrifice, slayer of desire; remover of Daksha's offering, the all-enduring, the central.
Verse 26
तेजोपहारी बलहा मुदितोऽर्थोऽजितोऽवरः । गम्भीरघोषा गम्भीरो गम्भीरबलवाहनः ॥ २३॥
Tejopahari balaha muditorthojitovarah Gambhiraghosha gambhiro gambhirabalavahanah
Remover of others' power, slayer of pride, the joyful, the goal, the unconquered, the most excellent; of deep voice and deep nature, of profound strength and bearing.
Verse 27
न्यग्रोधरूपो न्यग्रोधो वृक्षपर्णस्थितिर्विभुः । सुतीक्ष्णदशनश्चैव महाकायो महाननः ॥ २४॥
Nyagrodharupo nyagrodho vrikshaparnasthitirvibhuh Sutikshnadashanashchaiva mahakayo mahananah
Of banyan-form, the banyan, abiding on its leaf, the all-pervading; of sharp teeth, of vast body and vast face.
Verse 28
विष्वक्सेनो हरिर्यज्ञः संयुगापीडवाहनः । तीक्ष्णतापश्च हर्यश्वः सहायः कर्मकालवित् ॥ २५॥
Vishvakseno hariryajnah samyugapidavahanah Tikshnatapashcha haryashvah sahayah karmakalavit
Vishvaksena, Hari, the sacrifice, borne into the press of battle; of fierce heat, of tawny steeds, the helper, knower of action and time.
Verse 29
विष्णुप्रसादितो यज्ञः समुद्रो वडवामुखः । हुताशनसहायश्च प्रशान्तात्मा हुताशनः ॥ २६॥
Vishnuprasadito yajnah samudro vadavamukhah Hutashanasahayashcha prashantatma hutashanah
Propitiated by Vishnu, the sacrifice, the ocean and the mare's-mouth fire within it; companion of the fire, the tranquil Self, and the devouring fire itself.
Verse 30
उग्रतेजा महातेजा जन्यो विजयकालवित् । ज्योतिषामयनं सिद्धिः सर्वविग्रह एव च ॥ २७॥
Ugrateja mahateja janyo vijayakalavit Jyotishamayanam siddhih sarvavigraha eva cha
Of fierce splendour and mighty splendour, born of battle, knower of the hour of victory; the course of the lights (of heaven), perfection itself, and every form.
Verse 31
शिखी मुण्डी जटी ज्वाली मूर्तिजो मूर्धगो बली । वेणवी पणवी ताली खली कालकटङ्कटः ॥ २८॥
Shikhi mundi jati jvali murtijo murdhago bali Venavi panavi tali khali kalakatankatah
The crested, the shaven, the matted, the flaming, born of (His own) image, crowning the head, the mighty; player of flute, drum and cymbal, the threshing one — Kalakatankata.
Verse 32
नक्षत्रविग्रहमतिर्गुणबुद्धिर्लयो गमः । प्रजापतिर्विश्वबाहुर्विभागः सर्वगोमुखः ॥ २९॥
Nakshatravigrahamatirgunabuddhirlayo gamah Prajapatirvishvabahurvibhagah sarvagomukhah
Of star-bright intellect, of qualitied wisdom, dissolution and the goer; the lord of creatures, of universal arms, distribution itself, facing all as the cow-faced.
Verse 33
विमोचनः सुसरणो हिरण्यकवचोद्भवः । मेढ्रजो बलचारी च महीचारी स्रुतस्तथा ॥ ३०॥
Vimochanah susarano hiranyakavachodbhavah Medhrajo balachari cha mahichari srutastatha
The liberator, of good refuge, born of the golden armour (Hiranya-kavacha); the source of generation, ranging in strength, ranging the earth, the renowned (Sruta).
Verse 34
सर्वतूर्यनिनादी च सर्वातोद्यपरिग्रहः । व्यालरूपो गुहावासी गुहो माली तरङ्गवित् ॥ ३१॥
Sarvaturyaninadi cha sarvatodyaparigrahah Vyalarupo guhavasi guho mali tarangavit
Sounding all instruments, master of every music; serpent-formed, dwelling in the cave (Guha-vasi), the hidden, garlanded, knower of the wave (of existence).
Verse 35
त्रिदशस्त्रिकालधृक्कर्मसर्वबन्धविमोचनः । बन्धनस्त्वसुरेन्द्राणां युधि शत्रुविनाशनः ॥ ३२॥
Tridashastrikaladhrikkarmasarvabandhavimochanah Bandhanastvasurendranam yudhi shatruvinashanah
The thirty (gods), bearer of the three times, releaser from every bond of action; the binder of the asura-lords, slayer of foes in battle.
Verse 36
साङ्ख्यप्रसादो दुर्वासाः सर्वसाधुनिषेवितः । प्रस्कन्दनो विभागज्ञो अतुल्यो यज्ञभागवित् ॥ ३३॥
Sankhyaprasado durvasah sarvasadhunishevitah Praskandano vibhagajno atulyo yajnabhagavit
Grace of the Sankhya, Durvasas, served by all the holy; the leaper-forth, knower of distinctions, the incomparable, knower of the sacrificial share.
Verse 37
सर्ववासः सर्वचारी दुर्वासा वासवोऽमरः । हैमो हेमकरो यज्ञः सर्वधारी धरोत्तमः ॥ ३४॥
Sarvavasah sarvachari durvasa vasavomarah Haimo hemakaro yajnah sarvadhari dharottamah
Dwelling everywhere, ranging everywhere, Durvasas, Indra (Vasava), the immortal; the golden, the gold-maker, the sacrifice, bearer of all, the best of upholders.
Verse 38
लोहिताक्षो महाक्षश्च विजयाक्षो विशारदः । सङ्ग्रहो निग्रहः कर्ता सर्पचीरनिवासनः ॥ ३५॥
Lohitaksho mahakshashcha vijayaksho visharadah Sangraho nigrahah karta sarpachiranivasanah
Red-eyed, large-eyed, victory-eyed, the learned; gathering and restraining, the doer, clad in the serpent's slough.
Verse 39
मुख्योऽमुख्यश्च देहश्च काहलिः सर्वकामदः । सर्वकासप्रसादश्च सुबलो बलरूपधृत् ॥ ३६॥
Mukhyomukhyashcha dehashcha kahalih sarvakamadah Sarvakasaprasadashcha subalo balarupadhrit
The chief and the un-chief, the embodied, the drum (Kahali), giver of all desires; gracious to every cough and ailment, of great strength, bearer of strength's form.
Verse 40
सर्वकामवरश्चैव सर्वदः सर्वतोमुखः । आकाशनिर्विरूपश्च निपाती ह्यवशः खगः ॥ ३७॥
Sarvakamavarashchaiva sarvadah sarvatomukhah Akashanirvirupashcha nipati hyavashah khagah
The boon of all desires, the all-giving, facing every direction; formless as the sky, the swooping one, free and unbound, the sky-goer.
Verse 41
रौद्ररूपोंऽशुरादित्यो बहुरश्मिः सुवर्चसी । वसुवेगो महावेगो मनोवेगो निशाचरः ॥ ३८॥
Raudrarupomshuradityo bahurashmih suvarchasi Vasuvego mahavego manovego nishacharah
Of fierce form, the radiant Sun of many rays and brilliant glow; swift as the Vasus, of mighty speed, swift as the mind, ranging the night.
Verse 42
सर्ववासी श्रियावासी उपदेशकरोऽकरः । मुनिरात्मनिरालोकः सम्भग्नश्च सहस्रदः ॥ ३९॥
Sarvavasi shriyavasi upadeshakarokarah Muniratmaniralokah sambhagnashcha sahasradah
Dwelling in all, dwelling in prosperity (Shri), the giver of teaching, the inactive; the silent sage, self-luminous beyond sight, the sundered, the giver of thousands.
Verse 43
पक्षी च पक्षरूपश्च अतिदीप्तो विशाम्पतिः । उन्मादो मदनः कामो ह्यश्वत्थोऽर्थकरो यशः ॥ ४०॥
Pakshi cha paksharupashcha atidipto vishampatih Unmado madanah kamo hyashvatthorthakaro yashah
The bird and of bird-form, the intensely radiant, lord of the people; frenzy, the maddener, Desire, the holy fig (Ashvattha), maker of wealth, glory.
Verse 44
वामदेवश्च वामश्च प्राग्दक्षिणश्च वामनः । सिद्धयोगी महर्षिश्च सिद्धार्थः सिद्धसाधकः ॥ ४१॥
Vamadevashcha vamashcha pragdakshinashcha vamanah Siddhayogi maharshishcha siddharthah siddhasadhakah
Vamadeva, the lovely, of the eastern and southern (faces), the dwarf (Vamana); the perfected yogi, the great seer, of accomplished aim, fulfiller of the perfected.
Verse 45
भिक्षुश्च भिक्षुरूपश्च विपणो मृदुरव्ययः । महासेनो विशाखश्च षष्टिभागो गवाम्पतिः ॥ ४२॥
Bhikshushcha bhikshurupashcha vipano mriduravyayah Mahaseno vishakhashcha shashtibhago gavampatih
The mendicant and of mendicant-form, the trader, gentle and imperishable; the great general (Mahasena/Skanda), Vishakha, the sixth portion, lord of cattle.
Verse 46
वज्रहस्तश्च विष्कम्भी चमूस्तम्भन एव च । वृत्तावृत्तकरस्तालो मधुर्मधुकलोचनः ॥ ४३॥
Vajrahastashcha vishkambhi chamustambhana eva cha Vrittavrittakarastalo madhurmadhukalochanah
Thunderbolt in hand, the prop, and the stupefier of armies; maker of the cycle and its breaking, the rhythm (Tala), the sweet, of honeyed eyes.
Verse 47
वाचस्पत्यो वाजसनो नित्यमाश्रमपूजितः । ब्रह्मचारी लोकचारी सर्वचारी विचारवित् ॥ ४४॥
Vachaspatyo vajasano nityamashramapujitah Brahmachari lokachari sarvachari vicharavit
Lord of speech, the swift-darting, ever worshipped in the hermitages; the celibate, ranging the worlds, ranging all, knower of right deliberation.
Verse 48
ईशान ईश्वरः कालो निशाचारी पिनाकवान् । निमित्तस्थो निमित्तं च नन्दिर्नन्दिकरो हरिः ॥ ४५॥
Ishana ishvarah kalo nishachari pinakavan Nimittastho nimittam cha nandirnandikaro harih
Ishana the ruler, the Lord, Time, ranging the night, bearer of the Pinaka bow; standing as the cause and the very cause, Nandi and maker of joy, Hari.
Verse 49
नन्दीश्वरश्च नन्दी च नन्दनो नन्दिवर्धनः । भगहारी निहन्ता च कालो ब्रह्मा पितामहः ॥ ४६॥
Nandishvarashcha nandi cha nandano nandivardhanah Bhagahari nihanta cha kalo brahma pitamahah
Nandishvara and Nandi, the joyous, increaser of joy; remover of fortunes (at dissolution), the slayer, Time, Brahma, the grandsire.
Verse 50
चतुर्मुखो महालिङ्गश्चारुलिङ्गस्तथैव च । लिङ्गाध्यक्षः सुराध्यक्षो योगाध्यक्षो युगावहः ॥ ४७॥
Chaturmukho mahalingashcharulingastathaiva cha Lingadhyakshah suradhyaksho yogadhyaksho yugavahah
The four-faced, of the great Linga and the lovely Linga; overseer of the Linga, of the gods, and of yoga, the bringer-on of the ages.
Verse 51
बीजाध्यक्षो बीजकर्ता अव्यात्माऽनुगतो बलः । इतिहासः सकल्पश्च गौतमोऽथ निशाकरः ॥ ४८॥
Bijadhyaksho bijakarta avyatmanugato balah Itihasah sakalpashcha gautamotha nishakarah
Overseer of the seed (of creation) and its maker, the indwelling, the followed, the strong; History itself, with the Kalpa, Gautama, and the night-maker (moon).
Verse 52
दम्भो ह्यदम्भो वैदम्भो वश्यो वशकरः कलिः । लोककर्ता पशुपतिर्महाकर्ता ह्यनौषधः ॥ ४९॥
Dambho hyadambho vaidambho vashyo vashakarah kalih Lokakarta pashupatirmahakarta hyanaushadhah
Pride and freedom from pride and the master of pride, the controllable and the controller, the strife (Kali); maker of the worlds, lord of creatures (Pashupati), great doer, needing no medicine.
Verse 53
अक्षरं परमं ब्रह्म बलवच्छक्र एव च । नीतिर्ह्यनीतिः शुद्धात्मा शुद्धो मान्यो गतागतः ॥ ५०॥
Aksharam paramam brahma balavachchhakra eva cha Nitirhyanitih shuddhatma shuddho manyo gatagatah
The imperishable supreme Brahman, the mighty Indra (Shakra); both law and beyond-law, the pure Self, the pure, the honoured, the goer-and-comer.
Verse 54
बहुप्रसादः सुस्वप्नो दर्पणोऽथ त्वमित्रजित् । वेदकारो मन्त्रकारो विद्वान्समरमर्दनः ॥ ५१॥
Bahuprasadah susvapno darpanotha tvamitrajit Vedakaro mantrakaro vidvansamaramardanah
Of abundant grace, of fair dreams, the mirror, conqueror of foes; maker of the Veda and of mantras, the wise, crusher in battle.
Verse 55
महामेघनिवासी च महाघोरो वशीकरः । अग्निर्ज्वालो महाज्वालो अतिधूम्रो हुतो हविः ॥ ५२॥
Mahameghanivasi cha mahaghoro vashikarah Agnirjvalo mahajvalo atidhumro huto havih
Dwelling in the great cloud, the greatly terrible, the subduer; the fire, the flame and the great flame, the deeply smoke-dark, the oblation offered.
Verse 56
वृषणः शङ्करो नित्यं वर्चस्वी धूमकेतनः । नीलस्तथाङ्गलुब्धश्च शोभनो निरवग्रहः ॥ ५३॥
Vrishanah shankaro nityam varchasvi dhumaketanah Nilastathangalubdhashcha shobhano niravagrahah
The bull (and the showerer of grace), Shankara the doer of good, the ever-radiant, smoke-bannered; the dark blue, the seeker of devotion, the beautiful, the unobstructed.
Verse 57
स्वस्तिदः स्वस्तिभावश्च भागी भागकरो लघुः । उत्सङ्गश्च महाङ्गश्च महागर्भपरायणः ॥ ५४॥
Svastidah svastibhavashcha bhagi bhagakaro laghuh Utsangashcha mahangashcha mahagarbhaparayanah
Giver of welfare, of welfare's nature, the sharer and maker of shares, the swift; of broad lap and mighty body, intent on the great cosmic womb.
Verse 58
कृष्णवर्णः सुवर्णश्च इन्द्रियं सर्वदेहिनाम् । महापादो महाहस्तो महाकायो महायशाः ॥ ५५॥
Krishnavarnah suvarnashcha indriyam sarvadehinam Mahapado mahahasto mahakayo mahayashah
Dark-hued and golden-hued, the very sense-power of all embodied beings; of great feet, great hands, great body and great fame.
Verse 59
महामूर्धा महामात्रो महानेत्रो निशालयः । महान्तको महाकर्णो महोष्ठश्च महाहनुः ॥ ५६॥
Mahamurdha mahamatro mahanetro nishalayah Mahantako mahakarno mahoshthashcha mahahanuh
Of great head, great measure, great eyes, the abode of night; the great ender, of great ears, great lips and mighty jaw.
Verse 60
महानासो महाकम्बुर्महाग्रीवः श्मशानभाक् । महावक्षा महोरस्को ह्यन्तरात्मा मृगालयः ॥ ५७॥
Mahanaso mahakamburmahagrivah shmashanabhak Mahavaksha mahorasko hyantaratma mrigalayah
Of great nose, great neck (conch-like) and mighty throat, frequenter of the cremation ground; of broad chest and breast, the inner Self, the resting-place of the deer.
Verse 61
लम्बनो लम्बितोष्ठश्च महामायः पयोनिधिः । महादन्तो महादंष्ट्रो महाजिह्वो महामुखः ॥ ५८॥
Lambano lambitoshthashcha mahamayah payonidhih Mahadanto mahadamshtro mahajihvo mahamukhah
Of pendant form and drooping lip, of great power of illusion (Maya), the ocean of milk; of great teeth and tusks, mighty tongue and great mouth.
Verse 62
महानखो महारोमा महाकेशो महाजटः । प्रसन्नश्च प्रसादश्च प्रत्ययो गिरिसाधनः ॥ ५९॥
Mahanakho maharoma mahakesho mahajatah Prasannashcha prasadashcha pratyayo girisadhanah
Of great nails, great hair, great locks and great matted mass; the gracious and grace itself, the conviction, accomplished on the mountain.
Verse 63
स्नेहनोऽस्नेहनश्चैव अजितश्च महामुनिः । वृक्षाकारो वृक्षकेतुरनलो वायुवाहनः ॥ ६०॥
Snehanosnehanashchaiva ajitashcha mahamunih Vrikshakaro vrikshaketuranalo vayuvahanah
The loving and the loveless (beyond attachment), the unconquered, the great sage; tree-formed, tree-bannered, the fire, borne by the wind.
Verse 64
गण्डली मेरुधामा च देवाधिपतिरेव च । अथर्वशीर्षः सामास्य ऋक्सहस्रामितेक्षणः ॥ ६१॥
Gandali merudhama cha devadhipatireva cha Atharvashirshah samasya riksahasramitekshanah
Of the cheek-ornament, abiding on Meru, and the very lord of the gods; whose head is the Atharva, whose face the Sama, of measureless vision through a thousand Rik verses.
Verse 65
यजुःपादभुजो गुह्यः प्रकाशो जङ्गमस्तथा । अमोघार्थः प्रसादश्च अभिगम्यः सुदर्शनः ॥ ६२॥
Yajuhpadabhujo guhyah prakasho jangamastatha Amogharthah prasadashcha abhigamyah sudarshanah
Whose feet and arms are the Yajus, the secret, the manifest, the moving; of unfailing purpose, grace, easy of approach, of beautiful sight (Sudarshana).
Verse 66
उपकारः प्रियः सर्वः कनकः काञ्चनच्छविः । नाभिर्नन्दिकरो भावः पुष्करस्थपतिः स्थिरः ॥ ६३॥
Upakarah priyah sarvah kanakah kanchanachchhavih Nabhirnandikaro bhavah pushkarasthapatih sthirah
The benefactor, the beloved, the All, gold, of golden lustre; the navel (centre), maker of joy, Being itself, abiding firm on the lotus.
Verse 67
द्वादशस्त्रासनश्चाद्यो यज्ञो यज्ञसमाहितः । नक्तं कलिश्च कालश्च मकरः कालपूजितः ॥ ६४॥
Dvadashastrasanashchadyo yajno yajnasamahitah Naktam kalishcha kalashcha makarah kalapujitah
The twelve (Adityas), of the lion-seat, the primal, the sacrifice fully gathered; night, strife and Time, the Makara, worshipped through the ages.
Verse 68
सगणो गणकारश्च भूतवाहनसारथिः । भस्मशयो भस्मगोप्ता भस्मभूतस्तरुर्गणः ॥ ६५॥
Sagano ganakarashcha bhutavahanasarathih Bhasmashayo bhasmagopta bhasmabhutastarurganah
With His hosts and their maker, charioteer drawn by the host of spirits; reposing on ashes, guardian of ashes, become ash, the tree, the Gana.
Verse 69
लोकपालस्तथा लोको महात्मा सर्वपूजितः । शुक्लस्त्रिशुक्लः सम्पन्नः शुचिर्भूतनिषेवितः ॥ ६६॥
Lokapalastatha loko mahatma sarvapujitah Shuklastrishuklah sampannah shuchirbhutanishevitah
Guardian of the worlds, the world, the great Self, worshipped by all; the white, the thrice-white, the perfect, the pure, served by all beings.
Verse 70
आश्रमस्थः क्रियावस्थो विश्वकर्ममतिर्वरः । विशालशाखस्ताम्रोष्ठो ह्यम्बुजालः सुनिश्चलः ॥ ६७॥
Ashramasthah kriyavastho vishvakarmamatirvarah Vishalashakhastamroshtho hyambujalah sunishchalah
Abiding in the hermitage, established in action, of cosmic-architect mind, the best; of spreading branches, copper-lipped, lotus-netted, perfectly still.
Verse 71
कपिलः कपिशः शुक्ल आयुश्चैवि परोऽपरः । गन्धर्वो ह्यदितिस्तार्क्ष्यः सुविज्ञेयः सुशारदः ॥ ६८॥
Kapilah kapishah shukla ayushchaivi paroparah Gandharvo hyaditistarkshyah suvijneyah susharadah
Tawny and brown and white, life-span itself, the higher and the lower; the Gandharva, Aditi, Garuda (Tarkshya), easily known, of fine wisdom.
Verse 72
परश्वधायुधो देव अनुकारी सुबान्धवः । तुम्बवीणो महाक्रोध ऊर्ध्वरेता जलेशयः ॥ ६९॥
Parashvadhayudho deva anukari subandhavah Tumbavino mahakrodha urdhvareta jaleshayah
Wielding the battle-axe, the god, the imitator, the good kinsman; of the gourd-lute, of great wrath, of upward seed, reposing on the waters.
Verse 73
उग्रो वंशकरो वंशो वंशनादो ह्यनिन्दितः । सर्वाङ्गरूपो मायावी सुहृदो ह्यनिलोऽनलः ॥ ७०॥
Ugro vamshakaro vamsho vamshanado hyaninditah Sarvangarupo mayavi suhrido hyanilonalah
The fierce, maker of the lineage, the lineage and its sound, the unblamed; whole-formed, the magician (master of Maya), the kind friend, the wind and the fire.
Verse 74
बन्धनो बन्धकर्ता च सुबन्धनविमोचनः । स यज्ञारिः स कामारिर्महादंष्ट्रो महायुधः ॥ ७१॥
Bandhano bandhakarta cha subandhanavimochanah Sa yajnarih sa kamarirmahadamshtro mahayudhah
The bond and its maker and the releaser from every bond; the foe of (Daksha's) sacrifice, the foe of Desire, of great tusks and mighty weapons.
Verse 75
बहुधानिन्दितः शर्वः शङ्करः शङ्करोऽधनः । अमरेशो महादेवो विश्वदेवः सुरारिहा ॥ ७२॥
Bahudhaninditah sharvah shankarah shankarodhanah Amaresho mahadevo vishvadevah surariha
Variously praised, Sharva, Shankara the giver of peace, the unattached; lord of the immortals, the great God (Mahadeva), god of the universe, slayer of the gods' foes.
Verse 76
अहिर्बुध्न्योऽनिलाभश्च चेकितानो हविस्तथा । अजैकपाच्च कापाली त्रिशङ्कुरजितः शिवः ॥ ७३॥
Ahirbudhnyonilabhashcha chekitano havistatha Ajaikapachcha kapali trishankurajitah shivah
Ahirbudhnya (the serpent of the deep), of windless lustre, Chekitana, the oblation; Ajaikapad, Kapali, Trishanku, the unconquered, Shiva the auspicious.
Verse 77
धन्वन्तरिर्धूमकेतुः स्कन्दो वैश्रवणस्तथा । धाता शक्रश्च विष्णुश्च मित्रस्त्वष्टा ध्रुवो धरः ॥ ७४॥
Dhanvantarirdhumaketuh skando vaishravanastatha Dhata shakrashcha vishnushcha mitrastvashta dhruvo dharah
Dhanvantari, the comet, Skanda, Vaishravana (Kubera); the upholder Dhata, Shakra, Vishnu, Mitra, Tvashta, the fixed (Dhruva), the upholder.
Verse 78
प्रभावः सर्वगो वायुरर्यमा सविता रविः । उषङ्गुश्च विधाता च मान्धाता भूतभावनः ॥ ७५॥
Prabhavah sarvago vayuraryama savita ravih Ushangushcha vidhata cha mandhata bhutabhavanah
Power and the all-pervader, the Wind, Aryaman, Savitr, the Sun; Ushanas, the ordainer Vidhata, Mandhata, the source of beings.
Verse 79
विभुर्वर्णविभावी च सर्वकामगुणावहः । पद्मनाभो महागर्भश्चन्द्रवक्त्रोऽनिलोऽनलः ॥ ७६॥
Vibhurvarnavibhavi cha sarvakamagunavahah Padmanabho mahagarbhashchandravaktronilonalah
The all-pervading, of varied light, bearer of all desires and qualities; the lotus-naveled, the great womb, moon-faced, the wind and the fire.
Verse 80
बलवांश्चोपशान्तश्च पुराणः पुण्यचञ्चुरी । कुरुकर्ता कुरुवासी कुरुभूतो गुणौषधः ॥ ७७॥
Balavamshchopashantashcha puranah punyachanchuri Kurukarta kuruvasi kurubhuto gunaushadhah
The mighty and the deeply tranquil, the ancient, of holy renown; maker, dweller and being of the Kuru land, the medicine of the qualities.
Verse 81
सर्वाशयो दर्भचारी सर्वेषां प्राणिनां पतिः । देवदेवः सुखासक्तः सदसत्सर्वरत्नवित् ॥ ७८॥
Sarvashayo darbhachari sarvesham praninam patih Devadevah sukhasaktah sadasatsarvaratnavit
The refuge of all, ranging on the sacred grass, lord of all living creatures; God of gods, abiding in bliss, knower of being, non-being and all jewels.
Verse 82
कैलासगिरिवासी च हिमवद्गिरिसंश्रयः । कूलहारी कूलकर्ता बहुविद्यो बहुप्रदः ॥ ७९॥
Kailasagirivasi cha himavadgirisamshrayah Kulahari kulakarta bahuvidyo bahupradah
Dwelling on Mount Kailasa and resorting to the Himalaya; destroyer and maker of shores (limits), of manifold knowledge, the giver of much.
Verse 83
वणिजो वर्धकी वृक्षो बकुलश्चन्दनश्छदः । सारग्रीवो महाजत्रुरलोलश्च महौषधः ॥ ८०॥
Vanijo vardhaki vriksho bakulashchandanashchhadah Saragrivo mahajatruralolashcha mahaushadhah
The merchant, the carpenter, the tree, the Bakula, sandal and leaf; of firm neck and mighty collar, the un-restless, the great healing herb.
Verse 84
सिद्धार्थकारी सिद्धार्थश्छन्दोव्याकरणोत्तरः । सिंहनादः सिंहदंष्ट्रः सिंहगः सिंहवाहनः ॥ ८१॥
Siddharthakari siddharthashchhandovyakaranottarah Simhanadah simhadamshtrah simhagah simhavahanah
Maker and possessor of the perfected aim, supreme in metre and grammar; of the lion's roar and lion's fang, lion-gaited, lion-borne.
Verse 85
प्रभावात्मा जगत्कालस्थालो लोकहितस्तरुः । सारङ्गो नवचक्राङ्गः केतुमाली सभावनः ॥ ८२॥
Prabhavatma jagatkalasthalo lokahitastaruh Sarango navachakrangah ketumali sabhavanah
Of powerful Self, Time of the world, the cup, the world's benefactor, the tree; the dappled (Saranga), of the new wheel of nine, garlanded with banners, of fair intent.
Verse 86
भूतालयो भूतपतिरहोरात्रमनिन्दितः ॥ ८३॥
Bhutalayo bhutapatirahoratramaninditah
The abode of all beings, lord of beings, day-and-night itself, the unblamed.
Verse 87
वाहिता सर्वभूतानां निलयश्च विभुर्भवः । अमोघः संयतो ह्यश्वो भोजनः प्राणधारणः ॥ ८४॥
Vahita sarvabhutanam nilayashcha vibhurbhavah Amoghah samyato hyashvo bhojanah pranadharanah
The bearer of all beings, the resting-place, the all-pervading Bhava; the unfailing, the controlled, the swift steed, the food, the upholder of life-breath.
Verse 88
धृतिमान्मतिमान्दक्षः सत्कृतश्च युगाधिपः । गोपालिर्गोपतिर्ग्रामो गोचर्मवसनो हरिः। हिरण्यबाहुश्च तथा गुहापालः प्रवेशिनाम् । प्रकृष्टारिर्महाहर्षो जितकामो जितेन्द्रियः ॥ ८५॥
Dhritimanmatimandakshah satkritashcha yugadhipah Gopalirgopatirgramo gocharmavasano harih Hiranyabahushcha tatha guhapalah praveshinam Prakrishtarirmahaharsho jitakamo jitendriyah
Of firm resolve, of wisdom, the able, the well-honoured, lord of the aeon; the cowherd, the cow-lord, the village, clad in cow-hide, Hari; of golden arms, guardian of the cave for those who enter, the great foe-queller, the greatly joyful, conqueror of desire and the senses.
Verse 89
गान्धारश्च सुवासश्च तपःसक्तो रतिर्नरः । महागीतो महानृत्यो ह्यप्सरोगणसेवितः ॥ ८६॥
Gandharashcha suvasashcha tapahsakto ratirnarah Mahagito mahanrityo hyapsaroganasevitah
Of the Gandhara (note), of fair dwelling, intent on penance, delight and the (cosmic) Man; of great song and great dance, served by the hosts of Apsaras.
Verse 90
महाकेतुर्महाधातुर्नैकसानुचरश्चलः । आवेदनीय आदेशः सर्वगन्धसुखावहः ॥ ८७॥
Mahaketurmahadhaturnaikasanucharashchalah Avedaniya adeshah sarvagandhasukhavahah
Of the great banner and great element, of many ridges, the moving; worthy to be made known, the command, bringer of every fragrance and joy.
Verse 91
तोरणस्तारणो वातः परिधी पतिखेचरः । संयोगो वर्धनो वृद्धो अतिवृद्धो गुणाधिकः ॥ ८८॥
Toranastarano vatah paridhi patikhecharah Samyogo vardhano vriddho ativriddho gunadhikah
The arch and the deliverer, the wind, the enclosure, lord of sky-rangers; union, increase, the aged, the very ancient, surpassing in virtue.
Verse 92
नित्य आत्मसहायश्च देवासुरपतिः पतिः । युक्तश्च युक्तबाहुश्च देवो दिवि सुपर्वणः ॥ ८९॥
Nitya atmasahayashcha devasurapatih patih Yuktashcha yuktabahushcha devo divi suparvanah
The eternal, self-helped, lord of gods and asuras, the master; the joined and joined-armed, the god of the well-jointed in heaven.
Verse 93
आषाढश्च सुषाण्ढश्च ध्रुवोऽथ हरिणो हरः । वपुरावर्तमानेभ्यो वसुश्रेष्ठो महापथः ॥ ९०॥
Ashadhashcha sushandhashcha dhruvotha harino harah Vapuravartamanebhyo vasushreshtho mahapathah
Ashadha and Sushandha, the fixed Dhruva, the deer (Harina), Hara; of body beyond the revolving (worlds), best of the Vasus, the great path.
Verse 94
शिरोहारी विमर्शश्च सर्वलक्षणलक्षितः । अक्षश्च रथयोगी च सर्वयोगी महाबलः ॥ ९१॥
Shirohari vimarshashcha sarvalakshanalakshitah Akshashcha rathayogi cha sarvayogi mahabalah
The head-bearer (of skulls), reflection itself, marked with every auspicious mark; the axis and the chariot-yoked, the all-yogi, of mighty strength.
Verse 95
समाम्नायोऽसमाम्नायस्तीर्थदेवो महारथः । निर्जीवो जीवनो मन्त्रः शुभाक्षो बहुकर्कशः ॥ ९२॥
Samamnayosamamnayastirthadevo maharathah Nirjivo jivano mantrah shubhaksho bahukarkashah
The tradition and beyond tradition, god of the sacred fords, the great charioteer; the lifeless and life-giving, the Mantra, of auspicious eyes, the very rugged.
Verse 96
रत्नप्रभूतो रत्नाङ्गो महार्णवनिपानवित् । मूलं विशालो ह्यमृतो व्यक्ताव्यक्तस्तपोनिधिः ॥ ९३॥
Ratnaprabhuto ratnango maharnavanipanavit Mulam vishalo hyamrito vyaktavyaktastaponidhih
Born of jewels, jewel-limbed, knower of the great ocean's depths; the root, the vast, the immortal, manifest-and-unmanifest, the treasure of penance.
Verse 97
आरोहणोऽधिरोहश्च शीलधारी महायशाः । सेनाकल्पो महाकल्पो योगो युगकरो हरिः ॥ ९४॥
Arohanodhirohashcha shiladhari mahayashah Senakalpo mahakalpo yogo yugakaro harih
The ascent and the over-ascent, bearer of right conduct, of great fame; ordainer of the army, of the great aeon, Yoga itself, maker of the ages, Hari.
Verse 98
युगरूपो महारूपो महानागहनो वधः । न्यायनिर्वपणः पादः पण्डितो ह्यचलोपमः ॥ ९५॥
Yugarupo maharupo mahanagahano vadhah Nyayanirvapanah padah pandito hyachalopamah
Of the form of the ages, of mighty form, slayer of the great serpent, the slayer; the dispenser of justice, the foot, the wise, like the unmoving mountain.
Verse 99
बहुमालो महामालः शशी हरसुलोचनः । विस्तारो लवणः कूपस्त्रियुगः सफलोदयः ॥ ९६॥
Bahumalo mahamalah shashi harasulochanah Vistaro lavanah kupastriyugah saphalodayah
Of many garlands and the great garland, the moon, of the beautiful eye that is Hara's; expansion, the salt-ocean, the well, of the three ages, of fruitful rising.
Verse 100
त्रिलोचनो विषण्णाङ्गो मणिविद्धो जटाधरः । बिन्दुर्विसर्गः सुमुखः शरः सर्वायुधः सहः ॥ ९७॥
Trilochano vishannango manividdho jatadharah Bindurvisargah sumukhah sharah sarvayudhah sahah
The three-eyed (Trilochana), of drooping limb, jewel-pierced, bearing matted locks; the dot (Bindu) and its release (Visarga), of fair face, the arrow, all weapons, the enduring.
Verse 101
निवेदनः सुखाजातः सुगन्धारो महाधनुः । गन्धपाली च भगवानुत्थानः सर्वकर्मणाम् ॥ ९८॥
Nivedanah sukhajatah sugandharo mahadhanuh Gandhapali cha bhagavanutthanah sarvakarmanam
The announcer, born of ease, of fair Gandhara, the great bow; keeper of fragrance, the Lord, the uprising of all actions.
Verse 102
मन्थानो बहुलो वायुः सकलः सर्वलोचनः । तलस्तालः करस्थाली ऊर्ध्वसंहननो महान् ॥ ९९॥
Manthano bahulo vayuh sakalah sarvalochanah Talastalah karasthali urdhvasamhanano mahan
The churning-stick, the abundant, the Wind, the whole, the all-eyed; the surface, the rhythm, cup in hand, of upward frame, the great.
Verse 103
छत्रं सुच्छत्रो विख्यातो लोकः सर्वाश्रयः क्रमः । मुण्डो विरूपो विकृतो दण्डी कुण्डी विकुर्वणः। हर्यक्षः ककुभो वज्रो शतजिह्वः सहस्रपात् । सहस्रमूर्धा देवेन्द्रः सर्वदेवमयो गुरुः ॥ १००॥
Chhatram suchchhatro vikhyato lokah sarvashrayah kramah Mundo virupo vikrito dandi kundi vikurvanah Haryakshah kakubho vajro shatajihvah sahasrapat Sahasramurdha devendrah sarvadevamayo guruh
The parasol and fair parasol, the renowned, the world, the refuge of all, the stride; the shaven and deformed and mis-shapen, the staff-bearer, the ring-bearer, the transformer; of the lion-eye, the peak, the thunderbolt, of a hundred tongues, thousand-footed, thousand-headed Indra of gods, made of all gods, the Guru.
Verse 104
सहस्रबाहुः सर्वाङ्गः शरण्यः सर्वलोककृत् । पवित्रं त्रिककुन्मन्त्रः कनिष्ठः कृष्णपिङ्गलः। ब्रह्मदण्डविनिर्माता शतघ्नीपाशशक्तिमान् । पद्मगर्भो महागर्भो ब्रह्मगर्भो जलोद्भवः ॥ १०१॥
Sahasrabahuh sarvangah sharanyah sarvalokakrit Pavitram trikakunmantrah kanishthah krishnapingalah Brahmadandavinirmata shataghnipashashaktiman Padmagarbho mahagarbho brahmagarbho jalodbhavah
Of a thousand arms, whole of limb, the refuge, maker of all worlds; the holy, of the three peaks, the Mantra, the youngest, dark-and-tawny (Krishna-pingala); maker of Brahma's staff, wielding the Shataghni, noose and spear; lotus-wombed, great-wombed, Brahma-wombed, born of the waters.
Verse 105
गभस्तिर्ब्रह्मकृद्ब्रह्मी ब्रह्मविद्ब्राह्मणो गतिः । अनन्तरूपो नैकात्मा तिग्मतेजाः स्वयम्भुवः ॥ १०२॥
Gabhastirbrahmakridbrahmi brahmavidbrahmano gatih Anantarupo naikatma tigmatejah svayambhuvah
The ray of light, maker of Brahman and the Brahman, knower of Brahman, the Brahmana, the goal; of endless forms, of many Selves, of fierce splendour, self-existent.
Verse 106
ऊर्ध्वगात्मा पशुपतिर्वातरंहा मनोजवः । चन्दनी पद्मनालाग्रः सुरभ्युत्तरणो नरः ॥ १०३॥
Urdhvagatma pashupatirvataramha manojavah Chandani padmanalagrah surabhyuttarano narah
Of upward-moving Self, lord of creatures (Pashupati), swift as the wind, swift as the mind; the sandal-anointed, tip of the lotus-stalk, the deliverer of the divine cow, the Man.
Verse 107
कर्णिकारमहास्रग्वी नीलमौलिः पिनाकधृत् । उमापतिरुमाकान्तो जाह्नवीधृगुमाधवः ॥ १०४॥
Karnikaramahasragvi nilamaulih pinakadhrit Umapatirumakanto jahnavidhrigumadhavah
Garlanded with great Karnikara flowers, blue-crested, bearing the Pinaka; lord and beloved of Uma, bearer of the Ganga (Jahnavi), the consort of Uma.
Verse 108
वरो वराहो वरदो वरेण्यः सुमहास्वनः । महाप्रसादो दमनः शत्रुहा श्वेतपिङ्गलः ॥ १०५॥
Varo varaho varado varenyah sumahasvanah Mahaprasado damanah shatruha shvetapingalah
The boon and the Boar (Varaha), the boon-giver, the most worthy, of mighty sound; of great grace, the subduer, slayer of foes, white-and-tawny.
Verse 109
पीतात्मा परमात्मा च प्रयतात्मा प्रधानधृत् । सर्वपार्श्वमुखस्त्र्यक्षो धर्मसाधारणो वरः ॥ १०६॥
Pitatma paramatma cha prayatatma pradhanadhrit Sarvaparshvamukhastryaksho dharmasadharano varah
The golden Self, the supreme Self, the controlled Self, upholder of the Pradhana; facing every side, three-eyed, the common ground of dharma, the excellent.
Verse 110
चराचरात्मा सूक्ष्मात्मा अमृतो गोवृषेश्वरः । साध्यर्षिर्वसुरादित्यो विवस्वान्सविताऽमृतः। व्यासः सर्गः सुसङ्क्षेपो विस्तरः पर्ययो नरः । ऋतु संवत्सरो मासः पक्षः सङ्ख्यासमापनः ॥ १०७॥
Characharatma sukshmatma amrito govrisheshvarah Sadhyarshirvasuradityo vivasvansavitamritah Vyasah sargah susankshepo vistarah paryayo narah Ritu samvatsaro masah pakshah sankhyasamapanah
Self of the moving and unmoving, the subtle Self, the immortal, lord of the bull and cow; the Sadhya-sage, Vasu, Aditya, Vivasvan, Savitr, the immortal; Vyasa, creation, fine abridgement and expansion, recurrence, the Man; season, year, month, fortnight, the completion of all reckoning.
Verse 111
कला काष्ठा लवा मात्रा मुहूर्ताहःक्षपाः क्षणाः । विश्वक्षेत्रं प्रजाबीजं लिङ्गमाद्यस्तु निर्गमः ॥ १०८॥
Kala kashtha lava matra muhurtahahkshapah kshanah Vishvakshetram prajabijam lingamadyastu nirgamah
The kala, kashtha, lava, matra, muhurta, day, night and instant (the divisions of time); the field of the universe, the seed of beings, the emblem (Linga), the primal, the going-forth.
Verse 112
सदसद्व्यक्तमव्यक्तं पिता माता पितामहः । स्वर्गद्वारं प्रजाद्वारं मोक्षद्वारं त्रिविष्टपम् ॥ १०९॥
Sadasadvyaktamavyaktam pita mata pitamahah Svargadvaram prajadvaram mokshadvaram trivishtapam
Being and non-being, manifest and unmanifest, father, mother and grandsire; the door of heaven, the door of beings, the door of liberation, the celestial abode.
Verse 113
निर्वाणं ह्लादनश्चैव ब्रह्मलोकः परा गतिः । देवासुरविनिर्माता देवासुरपरायणः ॥ ११०॥
Nirvanam hladanashchaiva brahmalokah para gatih Devasuravinirmata devasuraparayanah
Liberation (Nirvana) and the gladdener, the world of Brahma, the supreme goal; maker of gods and asuras, the refuge of gods and asuras.
Verse 114
देवासुरगुरुर्देवो देवासुरनमस्कृतः । देवासुरमहामात्रो देवासुरगणाश्रयः ॥ १११॥
Devasuragururdevo devasuranamaskritah Devasuramahamatro devasuraganashrayah
Guru of gods and asuras, the God, saluted by gods and asuras; the great minister of gods and asuras, the support of their hosts.
Verse 115
देवासुरगणाध्यक्षो देवासुरगणाग्रणीः । देवातिदेवो देवर्षिर्देवासुरवरप्रदः ॥ ११२॥
Devasuraganadhyaksho devasuraganagranih Devatidevo devarshirdevasuravarapradah
Overseer of the hosts of gods and asuras, foremost among them; God beyond the gods, the divine sage, giver of boons to gods and asuras.
Verse 116
देवासुरेश्वरो विश्वो देवासुरमहेश्वरः । सर्वदेवमयोऽचिन्त्यो देवतात्माऽऽत्मसम्भवः ॥ ११३॥
Devasureshvaro vishvo devasuramaheshvarah Sarvadevamayochintyo devatatmatmasambhavah
Lord of gods and asuras, the universe, great Lord of gods and asuras; made of all gods, the inconceivable, the very soul of deity, self-born.
Verse 117
उद्भित्त्रिविक्रमो वैद्यो विरजो नीरजोऽमरः ॥ ईड्यो हस्तीश्वरो व्याघ्रो देवसिंहो नरर्षभः ॥ ११४॥
Udbhittrivikramo vaidyo virajo nirajomarah Idyo hastishvaro vyaghro devasimho nararshabhah
The sprung-forth, Trivikrama, the physician, the passionless, the dustless, the immortal; the praiseworthy, lord of elephants, the tiger, the divine lion, the bull among men.
Verse 118
विबुधोऽग्रवरः सूक्ष्मः सर्वदेवस्तपोमयः । सुयुक्तः शोभनो वज्री प्रासानां प्रभवोऽव्ययः ॥ ११५॥
Vibudhogravarah sukshmah sarvadevastapomayah Suyuktah shobhano vajri prasanam prabhavovyayah
The wise, foremost and best, the subtle, the all-god, made of penance; the well-joined, the resplendent, the thunderbolt-bearer, source of the lances, imperishable.
Verse 119
गुहः कान्तो निजः सर्गः पवित्रं सर्वपावनः । शृङ्गी शृङ्गप्रियो बभ्रू राजराजो निरामयः ॥ ११६॥
Guhah kanto nijah sargah pavitram sarvapavanah Shringi shringapriyo babhru rajarajo niramayah
The hidden (Guha), the beloved, the very own, creation, the holy, purifier of all; the horned, fond of the horn, the tawny (Babhru), king of kings, the diseaseless.
Verse 120
अभिरामः सुरगणो विरामः सर्वसाधनः । ललाटाक्षो विश्वदेवो हरिणो ब्रह्मवर्चसः ॥ ११७॥
Abhiramah suragano viramah sarvasadhanah Lalataksho vishvadevo harino brahmavarchasah
The delightful, the host of gods, cessation, the means of all attainment; the fore-head-eyed (Lalataksha), the all-god, the deer, of Brahmic splendour.
Verse 121
स्थावराणां पतिश्चैव नियमेन्द्रियवर्धनः । सिद्धार्थः सिद्धभूतार्थोऽचिन्त्यः सत्यव्रतः शुचिः ॥ ११८॥
Sthavaranam patishchaiva niyamendriyavardhanah Siddharthah siddhabhutarthochintyah satyavratah shuchih
Lord of all unmoving things, increaser of the disciplined senses; of accomplished aim, of accomplished being and purpose, the inconceivable, of true vows, the pure.
Verse 122
व्रताधिपः परं ब्रह्म भक्तानां परमा गतिः । विमुक्तो मुक्ततेजाश्च श्रीमान्श्रीवर्धनो जगत् ॥ ११९॥
Vratadhipah param brahma bhaktanam parama gatih Vimukto muktatejashcha shrimanshrivardhano jagat
Lord of vows, the supreme Brahman, the highest goal of devotees; the liberated, of liberated splendour, the glorious, increaser of glory — He who is the world itself.

Verse 124
शिवमेभिः स्तुवन्देवं नामभिः पुष्टिवर्धनैः । नित्ययुक्तः शुचिर्भक्तः प्राप्नोत्यात्मानमात्मना ॥ एतद्धि परमं ब्रह्म परं ब्रह्माधिगच्छति ॥
Shivamebhih stuvandevam namabhih pushtivardhanaih Nityayuktah shuchirbhaktah prapnotyatmanamatmana Etaddhi paramam brahma param brahmadhigachchhati
Praising the God Shiva with these names that increase well-being, the ever-devoted, pure devotee attains the Self by the Self. For this is the supreme Brahman, and by it one attains the supreme Brahman.
Verse 125
इदं पुण्यं पवित्रं च सर्वदा पापनाशनम् । योगदं मोक्षदं चैव स्वर्गदं तोषदं तथा ॥ एवमेतत्पठन्ते य एकभक्त्या तु शङ्करम् । या गतिः साङ्ख्ययोगानां व्रजन्त्येतां गतिं तदा ॥
Idam punyam pavitram cha sarvada papanashanam Yogadam mokshadam chaiva svargadam toshadam tatha Evametatpathante ya ekabhaktya tu shankaram Ya gatih sankhyayoganam vrajantyetam gatim tada
This hymn is meritorious and holy, ever destroying sin; it bestows yoga, liberation, heaven and contentment. Those who recite it with single-pointed devotion to Shankara attain that very goal which the masters of Sankhya and Yoga reach.
Verse 126
स्तवमेतं प्रयत्नेन सदा रुद्रस्य सन्निधौ । अब्दमेकं चरेद्भक्तः प्राप्नुयादीप्सितं फलम् ॥ एतद्रहस्यं परमं ब्रह्मणो हृदि संस्थितम् ।
Stavametam prayatnena sada rudrasya sannidhau Abdamekam charedbhaktah prapnuyadipsitam phalam Etadrahasyam paramam brahmano hridi samsthitam
The devotee who earnestly recites this hymn for one whole year in the presence of Rudra obtains the fruit he longs for. This is the supreme secret, set in the very heart of Brahma.
Verse 127
इति श्रीमहाभारते अनुशासनपर्वणि श्रीशिवसहस्रनामस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ॥ ॐ नमः शिवाय ॥
Iti shrimahabharate anushasanaparvani shrishivasahasranamastotram sampurnam Om namah shivaya
