Origin & Story

Hindu devotional tradition · Unknown (folk tradition) · Medieval period

The Saraswati Aarti follows the tradition of deity-specific aartis that developed during the Bhakti movement. Saraswati worship is particularly strong in eastern and northern India, where Basant Panchami is one of the major festivals. The aarti captures the essential attributes of Saraswati — her white garments (symbolizing purity), her veena (music and arts), and her role as the ultimate source of all knowledge.

As told in scripture

During Basant Panchami, it is traditional for young children to write their first words as an initiation into learning (Vidyarambh Sanskar). Countless parents testify that children who begin their education with Saraswati's blessing show remarkable aptitude for learning. The goddess is also credited with inspiring great scholars — Kalidasa, considered the greatest Sanskrit poet, is said to have been an illiterate woodcutter until Saraswati blessed him with extraordinary poetic genius.
