॥ ॐ श्रीगणेशाय नमः ॥ अस्य श्रीरामरक्षास्तोत्रमन्त्रस्य बुधकौशिक ऋषिः । श्रीसीतारामचन्द्रो देवता । अनुष्टुप् छन्दः । सीता शक्तिः । श्रीमद् हनुमान् कीलकम् । श्रीरामचन्द्रप्रीत्यर्थे रामरक्षास्तोत्रजपे विनियोगः ॥

Om shriganeshaya namah Asya shriramarakshastotramantrasya budhakaushika rishih Shrisitaramachandro devata anushtup chhandah Sita shaktih shrimad hanuman kilakam Shriramachandraprityarthe ramarakshastotrajape viniyogah

Om, salutations to Sri Ganesha. Of this Ram Raksha Stotra mantra, the seer is Sage Budha Kaushika; the deity is Sri Sita-Ramachandra; the metre is Anushtup; Sita is the power (Shakti); Sri Hanuman is the pin (Kilaka). It is recited for the pleasure of Sri Ramachandra — herein lies its application.

अथ ध्यानम् ॥ ध्यायेदाजानुबाहुं धृतशरधनुषं बद्धपद्मासनस्थं पीतं वासो वसानं नवकमलदलस्पर्धिनेत्रं प्रसन्नम् । वामाङ्कारूढसीतामुखकमलमिलल्लोचनं नीरदाभं नानालङ्कारदीप्तं दधतमुरुजटामण्डनं रामचन्द्रम् ॥

Atha dhyanam Dhyayedajanubahum dhritasharadhanusham baddhapadmasanastham Pitam vaso vasanam navakamaladalaspardhinetram prasannam Vamankarudhasitamukhakamalamilallochanam niradabham Nanalankaradiptam dadhatamurujatamandanam ramachandram

Meditation: Let one meditate on Ramachandra — His arms reaching to His knees, holding bow and arrows, seated firm in the lotus posture, robed in yellow, His eyes rivalling fresh lotus-petals, serene; His gaze meeting the lotus-face of Sita seated on His left lap, dark as a rain-cloud, resplendent with many ornaments, crowned with a great mass of matted locks.

चरितं रघुनाथस्य शतकोटि प्रविस्तरम् । एकैकमक्षरं पुंसां महापातकनाशनम् ॥ १॥

Charitam raghunathasya shatakoti pravistaram Ekaikamaksharam pumsam mahapatakanashanam

The story of Raghunatha (Rama) extends over a hundred crore verses; each single syllable of it destroys even the gravest of sins.

ध्यात्वा नीलोत्पलश्यामं रामं राजीवलोचनम् । जानकीलक्ष्मणोपेतं जटामुकुटमण्डितम् ॥ २॥

Dhyatva nilotpalashyamam ramam rajivalochanam Janakilakshmanopetam jatamukutamanditam

Having meditated on Rama — dark as the blue lotus, lotus-eyed, accompanied by Janaki (Sita) and Lakshmana, adorned with a crown of matted hair —

सासितूणधनुर्बाणपाणिं नक्तञ्चरान्तकम् । स्वलीलया जगत्त्रातुमाविर्भूतमजं विभुम् ॥ ३॥

Sasitunadhanurbanapanim naktancharantakam Svalilaya jagattratumavirbhutamajam vibhum

— bearing sword, quiver, bow and arrow in hand, the ender of the night-roaming demons, who took birth of His own free will, unborn yet all-pervading, to protect the world —

रामरक्षां पठेत्प्राज्ञः पापघ्नीं सर्वकामदाम् । शिरो मे राघवः पातु भालं दशरथात्मजः ॥ ४॥

Ramaraksham pathetprajnah papaghnim sarvakamadam Shiro me raghavah patu bhalam dasharathatmajah

— let the wise recite the Ram Raksha, destroyer of sin and giver of every desire. May Raghava protect my head; may the son of Dasharatha protect my forehead.

कौसल्येयो दृशौ पातु विश्वामित्रप्रियः श्रुती । घ्राणं पातु मखत्राता मुखं सौमित्रिवत्सलः ॥ ५॥

Kausalyeyo drishau patu vishvamitrapriyah shruti Ghranam patu makhatrata mukham saumitrivatsalah

May the son of Kausalya protect my eyes; may the beloved of Vishvamitra protect my ears; may the protector of the sacrifice guard my nose; may the loving brother of Lakshmana (Saumitri) guard my mouth.

जिह्वां विद्यानिधिः पातु कण्ठं भरतवन्दितः । स्कन्धौ दिव्यायुधः पातु भुजौ भग्नेशकार्मुकः ॥ ६॥

Jihvam vidyanidhih patu kantham bharatavanditah Skandhau divyayudhah patu bhujau bhagneshakarmukah

May the treasure of wisdom guard my tongue; may He whom Bharata adores guard my throat; may the bearer of divine weapons guard my shoulders; may He who broke Shiva's bow guard my arms.

करौ सीतापतिः पातु हृदयं जामदग्न्यजित् । मध्यं पातु खरध्वंसी नाभिं जाम्बवदाश्रयः ॥ ७॥

Karau sitapatih patu hridayam jamadagnyajit Madhyam patu kharadhvamsi nabhim jambavadashrayah

May the Lord of Sita guard my hands; may the conqueror of Parashurama (Jamadagnya) guard my heart; may the slayer of Khara guard my middle; may He in whom Jambavan took refuge guard my navel.

सुग्रीवेशः कटी पातु सक्थिनी हनुमत्प्रभुः । ऊरू रघूत्तमः पातु रक्षःकुलविनाशकृत् ॥ ८॥

Sugriveshah kati patu sakthini hanumatprabhuh Uru raghuttamah patu rakshahkulavinashakrit

May the Lord of Sugriva guard my waist; may the master of Hanuman guard my hips; may the best of the Raghus, destroyer of the demon race, guard my thighs.

जानुनी सेतुकृत्पातु जङ्घे दशमुखान्तकः । पादौ बिभीषणश्रीदः पातु रामोऽखिलं वपुः ॥ ९॥

Januni setukritpatu janghe dashamukhantakah Padau bibhishanashridah patu ramokhilam vapuh

May the builder of the bridge guard my knees; may the slayer of the ten-faced Ravana guard my shins; may He who gave fortune to Vibhishana guard my feet — may Rama guard my entire body!

एतां रामबलोपेतां रक्षां यः सुकृती पठेत् । स चिरायुः सुखी पुत्री विजयी विनयी भवेत् ॥ १०॥

Etam ramabalopetam raksham yah sukriti pathet Sa chirayuh sukhi putri vijayi vinayi bhavet

Whoever, blessed with merit, recites this protection endowed with the strength of Rama becomes long-lived, happy, blessed with children, victorious and humble.

पातालभूतलव्योमचारिणश्छद्मचारिणः । न द्रष्टुमपि शक्तास्ते रक्षितं रामनामभिः ॥ ११॥

Patalabhutalavyomacharinashchhadmacharinah Na drashtumapi shaktaste rakshitam ramanamabhih

Those who move beneath the earth, on the earth, or through the sky, and those who roam in disguise — none of them can even look upon one who is guarded by the names of Rama.

रामेति रामभद्रेति रामचन्द्रेति वा स्मरन् । नरो न लिप्यते पापैः भुक्तिं मुक्तिं च विन्दति ॥ १२॥

Rameti ramabhadreti ramachandreti va smaran Naro na lipyate papaih bhuktim muktim cha vindati

Whoever remembers 'Rama, Rama-bhadra, Ramachandra' is never tainted by sin; he gains both worldly enjoyment and final liberation.

जगज्जैत्रैकमन्त्रेण रामनाम्नाभिरक्षितम् । यः कण्ठे धारयेत्तस्य करस्थाः सर्वसिद्धयः ॥ १३॥

Jagajjaitraikamantrena ramanamnabhirakshitam Yah kanthe dharayettasya karasthah sarvasiddhayah

He who wears upon his throat (in memory) the world-conquering single mantra — the name of Rama, the protector — holds all powers (siddhis) in the palm of his hand.

वज्रपञ्जरनामेदं यो रामकवचं स्मरेत् । अव्याहताज्ञः सर्वत्र लभते जयमङ्गलम् ॥ १४॥

Vajrapanjaranamedam yo ramakavacham smaret Avyahatajnah sarvatra labhate jayamangalam

Whoever recalls this Rama-armour, named the 'Diamond Cage' (Vajra-Panjara), goes everywhere with his commands unobstructed and attains victory and auspiciousness.

आदिष्टवान् यथा स्वप्ने रामरक्षामिमां हरः । तथा लिखितवान् प्रातः प्रबुद्धो बुधकौशिकः ॥ १५॥

Adishtavan yatha svapne ramarakshamimam harah Tatha likhitavan pratah prabuddho budhakaushikah

Just as Lord Shiva (Hara) commanded it in a dream, so, on waking at dawn, did Budha Kaushika write down this Ram Raksha.

आरामः कल्पवृक्षाणां विरामः सकलापदाम् । अभिरामस्त्रिलोकानां रामः श्रीमान् स नः प्रभुः ॥ १६॥

Aramah kalpavrikshanam viramah sakalapadam Abhiramastrilokanam ramah shriman sa nah prabhuh

Rama is the grove of wish-fulfilling (Kalpa) trees, the cessation of all calamities, the delight of the three worlds; that glorious Rama is our Lord.

तरुणौ रूपसम्पन्नौ सुकुमारौ महाबलौ । पुण्डरीकविशालाक्षौ चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरौ ॥ १७॥

Tarunau rupasampannau sukumarau mahabalau Pundarikavishalakshau chirakrishnajinambarau

Youthful, of perfect beauty, tender yet of great strength, with eyes wide as lotuses, clad in bark and black antelope-skin,

फलमूलाशिनौ दान्तौ तापसौ ब्रह्मचारिणौ । पुत्रौ दशरथस्यैतौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥ १८॥

Phalamulashinau dantau tapasau brahmacharinau Putrau dasharathasyaitau bhratarau ramalakshmanau

— living on fruit and roots, self-controlled, ascetic, observing celibacy, these two sons of Dasharatha, the brothers Rama and Lakshmana,

शरण्यौ सर्वसत्त्वानां श्रेष्ठौ सर्वधनुष्मताम् । रक्षः कुलनिहन्तारौ त्रायेतां नो रघूत्तमौ ॥ १९॥

Sharanyau sarvasattvanam shreshthau sarvadhanushmatam Rakshah kulanihantarau trayetam no raghuttamau

— the refuge of all creatures, the foremost of all archers, destroyers of the demon race: may these two best of the Raghus protect us.

आत्तसज्जधनुषाविषुस्पृशावक्षयाशुगनिषङ्गसङ्गिनौ । रक्षणाय मम रामलक्ष्मणावग्रतः पथि सदैव गच्छताम् ॥ २०॥

Attasajjadhanushavishusprishavakshayashuganishangasanginau Rakshanaya mama ramalakshmanavagratah pathi sadaiva gachchhatam

With bows strung and ready, hands touching the arrows, bearing inexhaustible quivers — may Rama and Lakshmana ever walk before me on the path to protect me.

सन्नद्धः कवची खड्गी चापबाणधरो युवा । गच्छन्मनोरथोऽस्माकं रामः पातु सलक्ष्मणः ॥ २१॥

Sannaddhah kavachi khadgi chapabanadharo yuva Gachchhanmanorathosmakam ramah patu salakshmanah

Armoured, sword in hand, bearing bow and arrows, the youthful Rama with Lakshmana, fulfilling our every wish as He walks — may He protect us.

रामो दाशरथिः शूरो लक्ष्मणानुचरो बली । काकुत्स्थः पुरुषः पूर्णः कौसल्येयो रघूत्तमः ॥ २२॥

Ramo dasharathih shuro lakshmananucharo bali Kakutsthah purushah purnah kausalyeyo raghuttamah

Rama, son of Dasharatha, the valiant, followed by the mighty Lakshmana, of the Kakutstha line, the Perfect Being, son of Kausalya, the best of the Raghus;

वेदान्तवेद्यो यज्ञेशः पुराणपुरुषोत्तमः । जानकीवल्लभः श्रीमान् अप्रमेय पराक्रमः ॥ २३॥

Vedantavedyo yajneshah puranapurushottamah Janakivallabhah shriman aprameya parakramah

— knowable through Vedanta, Lord of sacrifice, the Supreme Being of the Puranas, beloved of Janaki, glorious, of immeasurable valour:

इत्येतानि जपन्नित्यं मद्भक्तः श्रद्धयान्वितः । अश्वमेधाधिकं पुण्यं सम्प्राप्नोति न संशयः ॥ २४॥

Ityetani japannityam madbhaktah shraddhayanvitah Ashvamedhadhikam punyam samprapnoti na samshayah

He who daily chants these names, my devotee filled with faith, surely attains merit greater than that of the Ashwamedha sacrifice.

रामं दूर्वादलश्यामं पद्माक्षं पीतवाससम् । स्तुवन्ति नामभिर्दिव्यैः न ते संसारिणो नराः ॥ २५॥

Ramam durvadalashyamam padmaksham pitavasasam Stuvanti namabhirdivyaih na te samsarino narah

Those who praise Rama — dark as a blade of durva grass, lotus-eyed, clad in yellow — with these divine names, are no longer bound to the cycle of birth.

रामं लक्ष्मणपूर्वजं रघुवरं सीतापतिं सुन्दरम् । काकुत्स्थं करुणार्णवं गुणनिधिं विप्रप्रियं धार्मिकम् । राजेन्द्रं सत्यसन्धं दशरथतनयं श्यामलं शान्तमूर्तिम् । वन्दे लोकाभिरामं रघुकुलतिलकं राघवं रावणारिम् ॥ २६॥

Ramam lakshmanapurvajam raghuvaram sitapatim sundaram Kakutstham karunarnavam gunanidhim viprapriyam dharmikam Rajendram satyasandham dasharathatanayam shyamalam shantamurtim Vande lokabhiramam raghukulatilakam raghavam ravanarim

I bow to Rama — elder brother of Lakshmana, best of the Raghus, lord of Sita, the beautiful one; of the Kakutstha line, an ocean of compassion, the treasure of virtues, dear to the Brahmins, the righteous; the king of kings, true to his word, son of Dasharatha, dark-hued, of serene form; I bow to Raghava, the delight of the worlds, the crest-jewel of the Raghu line, the foe of Ravana.

रामाय रामभद्राय रामचन्द्राय वेधसे । रघुनाथाय नाथाय सीतायाः पतये नमः ॥ २७॥

Ramaya ramabhadraya ramachandraya vedhase Raghunathaya nathaya sitayah pataye namah

Salutations to Rama, to Rama-bhadra, to Ramachandra the creator; to the Lord of the Raghus, the Master, the husband of Sita — salutations.

श्रीराम राम रघुनन्दन राम राम श्रीराम राम भरताग्रज राम राम । श्रीराम राम रणकर्कश राम राम श्रीराम राम शरणं भव राम राम ॥ २८॥

Shrirama rama raghunandana rama rama Shrirama rama bharatagraja rama rama Shrirama rama ranakarkasha rama rama Shrirama rama sharanam bhava rama rama

Sri Rama, Rama, delight of the Raghus, Rama Rama; Sri Rama, Rama, elder of Bharata, Rama Rama; Sri Rama, Rama, fierce in battle, Rama Rama; Sri Rama, Rama, be my refuge, Rama Rama.

श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ मनसा स्मरामि श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ वचसा गृणामि । श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ शिरसा नमामि श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥ २९॥

Shriramachandracharanau manasa smarami Shriramachandracharanau vachasa grinami Shriramachandracharanau shirasa namami Shriramachandracharanau sharanam prapadye

The feet of Sri Ramachandra I remember with my mind; the feet of Sri Ramachandra I praise with my speech; the feet of Sri Ramachandra I bow to with my head; to the feet of Sri Ramachandra I surrender.

माता रामो मत्पिता रामचन्द्रः स्वामी रामो मत्सखा रामचन्द्रः । सर्वस्वं मे रामचन्द्रो दयालु- र्नान्यं जाने नैव जाने न जाने ॥ ३०॥

Mata ramo matpita ramachandrah Svami ramo matsakha ramachandrah Sarvasvam me ramachandro dayalu- Rnanyam jane naiva jane na jane

Rama is my mother, Ramachandra my father; Rama is my master, Ramachandra my friend; the compassionate Ramachandra is my all — I know no other, none other at all, none other.

दक्षिणे लक्ष्मणो यस्य वामे तु जनकात्मजा । पुरतो मारुतिर्यस्य तं वन्दे रघुनन्दनम् ॥ ३१॥

Dakshine lakshmano yasya vame tu janakatmaja Purato marutiryasya tam vande raghunandanam

Him who has Lakshmana on His right and the daughter of Janaka (Sita) on His left, and Hanuman (Maruti) before Him — that delight of the Raghus I adore.

लोकाभिरामं रणरङ्गधीरं राजीवनेत्रं रघुवंशनाथम् । कारुण्यरूपं करुणाकरं तं श्रीरामचन्द्रम् शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥ ३२॥

Lokabhiramam ranarangadhiram Rajivanetram raghuvamshanatham Karunyarupam karunakaram tam Shriramachandram sharanam prapadye

The delight of the worlds, steadfast in the arena of battle, lotus-eyed, lord of the Raghu dynasty, the very form of compassion, the abode of mercy — to that Sri Ramachandra I surrender.

मनोजवं मारुततुल्यवेगं जितेन्द्रियं बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठम् । वातात्मजं वानरयूथमुख्यं श्रीरामदूतं शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥ ३३॥

Manojavam marutatulyavegam Jitendriyam buddhimatam varishtham Vatatmajam vanarayuthamukhyam Shriramadutam sharanam prapadye

Swift as thought, equal to the wind in speed, master of the senses, foremost among the wise, son of the wind, chief of the monkey host — to that messenger of Rama (Hanuman) I surrender.

कूजन्तं रामरामेति मधुरं मधुराक्षरम् । आरुह्य कविताशाखां वन्दे वाल्मीकिकोकिलम् ॥ ३४॥

Kujantam ramarameti madhuram madhuraksharam Aruhya kavitashakham vande valmikikokilam

Cooing sweetly 'Rama, Rama' in honeyed, melodious syllables, perched upon the branch of poetry — I worship Valmiki, the cuckoo (whose song is the Ramayana).

आपदामपहर्तारं दातारं सर्वसम्पदाम् । लोकाभिरामं श्रीरामं भूयो भूयो नमाम्यहम् ॥ ३५॥

Apadamapahartaram dataram sarvasampadam Lokabhiramam shriramam bhuyo bhuyo namamyaham

The remover of calamities, the giver of all prosperity, the delight of all the worlds — to that Sri Rama I bow again and again.

भर्जनं भवबीजानामर्जनं सुखसम्पदाम् । तर्जनं यमदूतानां रामरामेति गर्जनम् ॥ ३६॥

Bharjanam bhavabijanamarjanam sukhasampadam Tarjanam yamadutanam ramarameti garjanam

The burning-up of the seeds of rebirth, the gathering of all happiness and wealth, the terror of the messengers of Death — such is the roar of 'Rama, Rama!'

रामो राजमणिः सदा विजयते रामं रमेशं भजे रामेणाभिहता निशाचरचमू रामाय तस्मै नमः । रामान्नास्ति परायणं परतरं रामस्य दासोऽस्म्यहं रामे चित्तलयः सदा भवतु मे भो राम मामुद्धर ॥ ३७॥

Ramo rajamanih sada vijayate ramam ramesham bhaje Ramenabhihata nishacharachamu ramaya tasmai namah Ramannasti parayanam parataram ramasya dasosmyaham Rame chittalayah sada bhavatu me bho rama mamuddhara

Rama, the jewel among kings, is ever victorious; I worship Rama, the Lord of Lakshmi. By Rama the army of night-demons was destroyed; to that Rama I bow. There is no higher refuge than Rama; I am Rama's servant; may my mind ever dissolve in Rama. O Rama, uplift me!

रामरामेति रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे । सहस्रनामतत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने ॥ ३८॥

Ramarameti rameti rame rame manorame Sahasranamatattulyam ramanama varanane

'Rama, Rama' — thus I delight in the delightful Rama. O fair-faced one, the name of Rama is equal to (chanting) the thousand names of Vishnu.

इति श्रीबुधकौशिकविरचितं श्रीरामरक्षास्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ॥ ॥ श्रीसीतारामचन्द्रार्पणमस्तु ॥

Iti shribudhakaushikavirachitam shriramarakshastotram sampurnam Shrisitaramachandrarpanamastu
