Pitra Dosh (Pitru Dosh)
The ancestral karmic debt — meaning, signs & remedies
Responsible graha: Sun & Rahu (with the ancestors / Pitr)
Pitra Dosh (or Pitru Dosh) is a karmic affliction said to arise when the ancestors (pitr) are unsatisfied — through neglected last rites, unfulfilled duties, or carried-forward family karma — often shown in the chart by an afflicted Sun or Rahu in certain houses. It is remedied not by fear but by gratitude: by honouring the ancestors with shraddh, tarpan and charity. The remedies are given below.
Signs of Pitra Dosh
Families affected often report recurring obstacles despite effort, difficulty in having or raising children, repeated quarrels or ill-health in the family, stalled progress, and a sense that nothing 'completes'. Traditionally it is also indicated by the Sun afflicted by Rahu, Saturn or Ketu, or malefics in the 9th house (the house of father and forefathers). Only a qualified astrologer can confirm it in a chart.
Remedies
The heart of the remedy is honouring the ancestors. Perform tarpan and shraddh for them — especially during Pitru Paksha (the fortnight before Sharad Navratri) and on every Amavasya. Offer water and food to the departed, feed Brahmins, cows, crows and the needy in their name, and plant a Peepal tree and offer it water. Recite the Gayatri Mantra and the Vishnu Sahasranama, and a shraddh at Gaya is the most revered remedy of all.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Pitra Dosh?
Pitra (Pitru) Dosh is a karmic affliction held to arise when the ancestors are unsatisfied — through neglected last rites or carried-forward family karma — and is shown in the chart by an afflicted Sun or Rahu, or malefics in the 9th house. It is remedied by honouring the ancestors with shraddh, tarpan and charity.
How is Pitra Dosh removed?
By honouring the ancestors: performing tarpan and shraddh (especially during Pitru Paksha and on Amavasya), feeding Brahmins, cows, crows and the needy in their name, offering water to a Peepal tree, reciting the Gayatri Mantra and Vishnu Sahasranama, and ideally performing shraddh at Gaya.
When should Pitru Paksha rituals be done?
Pitru Paksha is the fortnight (Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada/Ashwin) just before Sharad Navratri, the most important time for shraddh and tarpan. Monthly Amavasya, and the ancestor's tithi of passing, are also observed for the pitr.
