Bhagavad Gita Verses on Anger, Desire & the Senses

How desire breeds anger, anger breeds delusion, and delusion destroys. The Gita names lust, anger and greed the three gates to ruin.

Gita 2.62

ध्यायतो विषयान्पुंसः सङ्गस्तेषूपजायते। सङ्गात् संजायते कामः कामात्क्रोधोऽभिजायते॥

When one thinks of objects, attachment to them arises; from attachment, desire is born; from desire, anger arises.

Gita 2.63

क्रोधाद्भवति संमोहः संमोहात्स्मृतिविभ्रमः। स्मृतिभ्रंशाद् बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति॥

Anger leads to delusion, which causes loss of memory; this, in turn, leads to the destruction of discrimination, resulting in destruction.

श्री भगवानुवाच काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः। महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम्॥

The Blessed Lord said, "It is desire and it is anger, both of the quality of Rajas, all-devouring and all-sinful; know this as the foe here in this world."

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः।कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्॥

There are three gates to this hell, destructive of the self: lust, anger, and greed; therefore, one should abandon these three.
