How to Chant सूर्य नमस्कार मंत्र
Instructions
Each of the 12 mantras corresponds to one pose of Surya Namaskar. Start facing east at sunrise. Chant mantra 1 (Om Mitraya Namah) while doing pose 1 (Pranamasana/prayer pose). Continue through all 12 poses with their corresponding mantras. One full cycle = 12 mantras + 12 poses. Ideally do 12 cycles (144 total mantras) for a complete practice. The combination of physical movement, breath, and sacred sound makes this one of the most powerful daily practices.
Spiritual Significance
The Rigveda declares: 'Surya Atma Jagatastasthushashcha' — the Sun is the soul of all that moves and all that is still. Modern science confirms that all energy on Earth ultimately comes from the sun — food, fossil fuels, wind, and even the atoms in our bodies were forged in stars. The ancient rishis intuited this truth thousands of years before science, encoding it in these 12 mantras that honor the sun not just as a celestial body but as the source of all life and consciousness.
Origin & History
Source: Traditional yoga and Vedic sun worship
Author: Ancient Yogic tradition
The 12 names of the Sun used in Surya Namaskar come from the Vedic tradition of sun worship. Each name reveals a different aspect of solar energy — from the physical (light, warmth) to the cosmic (creator, illuminator of consciousness). The physical poses were codified in the Hatha Yoga tradition, and the combination of mantra + asana creates a complete sadhana (spiritual practice) that millions practice daily worldwide.
