Benefits of Chanting सुखकर्ता दुःखहर्ता आरती

The most beloved aarti of Lord Ganesha across India, sung to invoke his grace, remove obstacles, and fulfil the heart's desires.

Composed by the saint Samarth Ramdas, it praises Ganesha as Sukhkarta-Dukharta (giver of joy, remover of sorrow) and Mangalmurti, deepening devotion.

Believed that by his mere darshan (sight) every wish is fulfilled, and that singing it in danger brings his protection 'at the final hour'.

The signature aarti of Ganesh Chaturthi and Ganeshotsav, sung morning and evening before the Ganpati idol, and at the start of any auspicious work.

Chanted with the Ganesh Chalisa, Ganesha Pancharatnam and Vakratunda Mahakaya to complete the worship of Lord Ganesha.

Instructions

Stand before the image or idol of Lord Ganesha with a lit lamp (and camphor), and sing the aarti while gently circling the flame before the Lord. Offer durva grass, red flowers and modak. It is the central aarti of Ganesh Chaturthi, sung morning and evening, and concluded with 'Ganpati Bappa Morya'.

Spiritual Significance

Devotees hold that the aarti's promise is literally true — 'darshan-matre mankamana purti', that by the mere sight of Ganesha the heart's desires are fulfilled — and so it is sung first at every Ganeshotsav and every auspicious beginning, trusting the Lord to remove the obstacles before them.

Origin & History

Source: Composed by Samarth Ramdas

Author: Samarth Ramdas

Sukhkarta Dukharta was composed by the Marathi saint Samarth Ramdas, the guru who inspired the Maratha spirit of his age. In three loving verses he beholds Ganesha adorned with vermilion, pearls and a diamond crown, and signs himself 'Das Ramacha' (Ramdas, the servant), waiting at the Lord's door and begging his protection in calamity. It has become the heartbeat aarti of Ganesh Chaturthi.
