Complete Translation

She who is radiant as the jasmine, the moon and a garland of snow. She who is dressed in pure white garments. She whose hands are adorned with the veena. She who is seated on a white lotus. She who is always worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and all the gods — may that Goddess Saraswati, who removes all forms of ignorance, protect me. I bow to that supreme Goddess Sharada (Saraswati) — who is pure white, who is the essence of divine knowledge, who is the first and all-pervading, who holds the veena and the book, who bestows fearlessness, who removes the darkness of ignorance, who holds a crystal rosary in her hand, who is seated on a lotus — she who bestows intelligence and wisdom.

Origin & History

Source: Found in various Puranas and the Saraswati Stotram tradition

Author: Ancient Sanskrit tradition

Period: Ancient (exact date unknown)

Saraswati is described in the Rigveda as a mighty river goddess, but over centuries evolved into the goddess of knowledge, arts and wisdom. This particular shloka describes her in her iconic form — white-clad, seated on a lotus, holding a veena and book, worshipped even by the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It became the universal school prayer across India and is recited by millions of students every morning before the first class.
