श्री गायत्री चालीसा

Verse 1
ह्रीं श्रीं क्लीं मेधा प्रभा जीवन ज्योति प्रचंड ॥
शांति कांति जागृत प्रगति रचना शक्ति अखंड ॥
Hrim shrim klim medha prabha jivana jyoti prachamda
Shamti kamti jagrita pragati rachana shakti akhamda
Hrim, Shrim, Klim — O radiance of intellect and light, fierce flame of life! Peace, splendour, awakening and progress, creative and unbroken Power.
Verse 2
जगत जननी मंगल करनि गायत्री सुखधाम ।
प्रणवों सावित्री स्वधा स्वाहा पूरन काम ॥
Jagata janani mamgala karani gayatri sukhadhama
Pranavom savitri svadha svaha purana kama
Mother of the world, doer of all good, Gayatri, abode of joy; I bow to Savitri, Svadha and Svaha, fulfiller of every desire.
Verse 3
भूर्भुवः स्वः ॐ युत जननी ।
गायत्री नित कलिमल दहनी ॥
Bhurbhuvah svah Om yuta janani
Gayatri nita kalimala dahani
O Mother joined with Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah and Om; Gayatri, who daily burns away the impurities of the dark age.
Verse 4
अक्षर चौबीस परम पुनीता ।
इनमें बसें शास्त्र श्रुति गीता ॥
Akshara chaubisa parama punita
Inamem basem shastra shruti gita
Your twenty-four syllables are supremely holy; within them dwell the scriptures, the Vedas and the Gita.
Verse 5
शाश्वत सतोगुणी सत रूपा ।
सत्य सनातन सुधा अनूपा ॥
Shashvata satoguni sata rupa
Satya sanatana sudha anupa
Eternal, of the quality of purity (sattva), your very form is Truth; true, everlasting, peerless nectar.
Verse 6
हंसारूढ श्वेतांबर धारी ।
स्वर्ण कांति शुचि गगन-बिहारी ॥
Hamsarudha shvetambara dhari
Svarna kamti shuchi gagana-bihari
Mounted upon a swan, clad in white, with the lustre of gold, pure, roaming the open sky.
Verse 7
पुस्तक पुष्प कमंडलु माला ।
शुभ्र वर्ण तनु नयन विशाला ॥
Pustaka pushpa kamamdalu mala
Shubhra varna tanu nayana vishala
Bearing book, flower, water-pot and rosary; of bright hue, with a radiant body and large eyes.
Verse 8
ध्यान धरत पुलकित हित होई ।
सुख उपजत दुख दुर्मति खोई ॥
Dhyana dharata pulakita hita hoi
Sukha upajata dukha durmati khoi
Meditating upon you, the heart thrills with joy; happiness wells up, and sorrow and ill-will are lost.
Verse 9
कामधेनु तुम सुर तरु छाया ।
निराकार की अद्भुत माया ॥
Kamadhenu tuma sura taru chhaya
Nirakara ki adbhuta maya
You are the wish-granting cow (Kamadhenu), the shade of the celestial wish-tree; the wondrous Maya of the Formless One.
Verse 10
तुम्हरी शरण गहै जो कोई ।
तरै सकल संकट सों सोई ॥
Tumhari sharana gahai jo koi
Tarai sakala samkata som soi
Whoever takes refuge in you crosses safely beyond every calamity.
Verse 11
सरस्वती लक्ष्मी तुम काली ।
दिपै तुम्हारी ज्योति निराली ॥
Sarasvati lakshmi tuma kali
Dipai tumhari jyoti nirali
You are Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali; your matchless light shines forth.
Verse 12
तुम्हरी महिमा पार न पावैं ।
जो शारद शत मुख गुन गावैं ॥
Tumhari mahima para na pavaim
Jo sharada shata mukha guna gavaim
None can reach the end of your glory, though Sharada with a hundred mouths were to sing your virtues.
Verse 13
चार वेद की मात पुनीता ।
तुम ब्रह्माणी गौरी सीता ॥
Chara veda ki mata punita
Tuma brahmani gauri sita
Holy mother of the four Vedas; you are Brahmani, Gauri and Sita.
Verse 14
महामंत्र जितने जग माहीं ।
कोउ गायत्री सम नाहीं ॥
Mahamamtra jitane jaga mahim
Kou gayatri sama nahim
Of all the great mantras in the world, none is the equal of the Gayatri.
Verse 15
सुमिरत हिय में ज्ञान प्रकासै ।
आलस पाप अविद्या नासै ॥
Sumirata hiya mem jnana prakasai
Alasa papa avidya nasai
Remembering you, knowledge dawns within the heart; sloth, sin and ignorance are destroyed.
Verse 16
सृष्टि बीज जग जननि भवानी ।
कालरात्रि वरदा कल्याणी ॥
Srishti bija jaga janani bhavani
Kalaratri varada kalyani
Seed of creation, Mother of the world, Bhavani; Kalaratri, boon-giver, the auspicious one.
Verse 17
ब्रह्मा विष्णु रुद्र सुर जेते ।
तुम सों पावें सुरता तेते ॥
Brahma vishnu rudra sura jete
Tuma som pavem surata tete
Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and all the gods, from you they receive their divine power.
Verse 18
तुम भक्तन की भक्त तुम्हारे ।
जननिहिं पुत्र प्राण ते प्यारे ॥
Tuma bhaktana ki bhakta tumhare
Jananihim putra prana te pyare
You belong to your devotees and they to you, dear to you as a son to his mother, dearer than life itself.
Verse 19
महिमा अपरम्पार तुम्हारी ।
जय जय जय त्रिपदा भयहारी ॥
Mahima aparampara tumhari
Jaya jaya jaya tripada bhayahari
Boundless is your glory; victory, victory, victory to you, three-versed Tripada, remover of all fear.
Verse 20
पूरित सकल ज्ञान विज्ञाना ।
तुम सम अधिक न जगमें आना ॥
Purita sakala jnana vijnana
Tuma sama adhika na jagamem ana
Full of all knowledge and wisdom; none greater than you has ever come into the world.
Verse 21
तुमहिं जानि कछु रहै न शेषा ।
तुमहिं पाय कछु रहै न क्लेसा ॥
Tumahim jani kachhu rahai na shesha
Tumahim paya kachhu rahai na klesa
Knowing you, nothing remains unknown; attaining you, no affliction remains.
Verse 22
जानत तुमहिं तुमहिं व्है जाई ।
पारस परसि कुधातु सुहाई ॥
Janata tumahim tumahim vhai jai
Parasa parasi kudhatu suhai
Knowing you, one becomes you, as base metal is turned to beauty at the touch of the philosopher's stone.
Verse 23
तुम्हरी शक्ति दिपै सब ठाई ।
माता तुम सब ठौर समाई ॥
Tumhari shakti dipai saba thai
Mata tuma saba thaura samai
Your power shines in every place; O Mother, you pervade all places.
Verse 24
ग्रह नक्षत्र ब्रह्मांड घनेरे ।
सब गतिवान तुम्हारे प्रेरे ॥
Graha nakshatra brahmamda ghanere
Saba gativana tumhare prere
The countless planets, stars and universes all move, impelled by you.
Verse 25
सकल सृष्टि की प्राण विधाता ।
पालक पोषक नाशक त्राता ॥
Sakala srishti ki prana vidhata
Palaka poshaka nashaka trata
Life-giver and ordainer of all creation; protector, nourisher, destroyer and saviour.
Verse 26
मातेश्वरी दया व्रत धारी ।
तुम सन तरे पातकी भारी ॥
Mateshvari daya vrata dhari
Tuma sana tare pataki bhari
Mother-goddess, holding the vow of compassion; by you even the gravest sinners are saved.
Verse 27
जापर कृपा तुम्हारी होई ।
तापर कृपा करें सब कोई ॥
Japara kripa tumhari hoi
Tapara kripa karem saba koi
On whomever your grace falls, upon him every other being shows grace.
Verse 28
मंद बुद्धि ते बुधि बल पावें ।
रोगी रोग रहित हो जावें ॥
Mamda buddhi te budhi bala pavem
Rogi roga rahita ho javem
The dull-witted gain the strength of intellect; the sick become free of their disease.
Verse 29
दरिद्र मिटै कटै सब पीरा ।
नाशै दुख हरै भव भीरा ॥
Daridra mitai katai saba pira
Nashai dukha harai bhava bhira
Poverty is erased and all pain cut away; sorrow is destroyed and the fear of worldly existence removed.
Verse 30
गृह क्लेश चित चिंता भारी ।
नासै गायत्री भय हारी ॥
Griha klesha chita chimta bhari
Nasai gayatri bhaya hari
Household strife and the heavy anxiety of the mind, Gayatri, remover of fear, destroys them all.
Verse 31
संतति हीन सुसंतति पावें ।
सुख संपति युत मोद मनावें ॥
Samtati hina susamtati pavem
Sukha sampati yuta moda manavem
The childless gain good offspring, and rejoice, blessed with happiness and wealth.
Verse 32
भूत पिशाच सबै भय खावें ।
यम के दूत निकट नहिं आवें ॥
Bhuta pishacha sabai bhaya khavem
Yama ke duta nikata nahim avem
Ghosts and goblins are all consumed by fear; the messengers of Yama come not near.
Verse 33
जो सधवा सुमिरें चित लाई ।
अछत सुहाग सदा सुखदाई ॥
Jo sadhava sumirem chita lai
Achhata suhaga sada sukhadai
The married woman who remembers you with a focused heart keeps her wifehood unbroken, ever a source of joy.
Verse 34
घर वर सुख प्रद लहैं कुमारी ।
विधवा रहें सत्य व्रत धारी ॥
Ghara vara sukha prada lahaim kumari
Vidhava rahem satya vrata dhari
The maiden gains a home and a good, joy-giving husband; the widow abides, holding fast to the vow of truth.
Verse 35
जयति जयति जगदंब भवानी ।
तुम सम ओर दयालु न दानी ॥
Jayati jayati jagadamba bhavani
Tuma sama ora dayalu na dani
Victory, victory, O Jagadamba Bhavani; there is none so merciful or so giving as you.
Verse 36
जो सतगुरु सो दीक्षा पावे ।
सो साधन को सफल बनावे ॥
Jo sataguru so diksha pave
So sadhana ko saphala banave
Whoever receives initiation from a true guru makes his spiritual practice bear fruit.
Verse 37
सुमिरन करे सुरूचि बडभागी ।
लहै मनोरथ गृही विरागी ॥
Sumirana kare suruchi badabhagi
Lahai manoratha grihi viragi
The fortunate one who remembers you with pure love attains his heart's desire, be he householder or renunciate.
Verse 38
अष्ट सिद्धि नवनिधि की दाता ।
सब समर्थ गायत्री माता ॥
Ashta siddhi navanidhi ki data
Saba samartha gayatri mata
Giver of the eight siddhis and the nine treasures; all-capable is Mother Gayatri.
Verse 39
ऋषि मुनि यती तपस्वी योगी ।
आरत अर्थी चिंतित भोगी ॥
Rishi muni yati tapasvi yogi
Arata arthi chimtita bhogi
Sages, seers, ascetics, the penitent and yogis; the afflicted, the supplicant, the worried and the pleasure-seeker —
Verse 40
जो जो शरण तुम्हारी आवें ।
सो सो मन वांछित फल पावें ॥
Jo jo sharana tumhari avem
So so mana vamchhita phala pavem
Whoever comes to your refuge, each and every one gains the fruit his heart desires.
Verse 41
बल बुधि विद्या शील स्वभाउ ।
धन वैभव यश तेज उछाउ ॥
Bala budhi vidya shila svabhau
Dhana vaibhava yasha teja uchhau
Strength, intellect, learning, good character and disposition; wealth, splendour, fame, radiance and high spirits —
Verse 42
सकल बढें उपजें सुख नाना ।
जे यह पाठ करै धरि ध्याना ॥
Sakala badhem upajem sukha nana
Je yaha patha karai dhari dhyana
All these increase, and manifold joys arise, for whoever recites this with meditative attention.
Verse 43
यह चालीसा भक्ति युत पाठ करै जो कोई ।
तापर कृपा प्रसन्नता गायत्री की होय ॥
Yaha chalisa bhakti yuta patha karai jo koi
Tapara kripa prasannata gayatri ki hoya
Whoever recites this Chalisa with devotion, upon him fall the grace and the good pleasure of Gayatri.
