Who is Lord Shani?
Lord Shani (शनि देव) is the deity governing the planet Saturn — the cosmic administrator of karma, justice, discipline and life lessons. He is the son of Surya (the Sun God) and Chhaya (Shadow), half-brother of Yama (God of Death). His name means "the slow-moving one." He is the supreme cosmic judge: rewarding honesty and hard work, and delivering the natural consequences of unrighteous action with perfect precision.
The Shani Chalisa narrates the great mythological events in which Saturn shaped the fates of kings, sages and even the gods — from Lord Rama's exile to King Vikramaditya's suffering to the Pandavas' trials. It is the primary devotional text for Shani worship and the most important prescribed practice during Shani Sade Sati (the 7.5-year Saturn transit).

Listen & Chant Along
Hearing the correct pronunciation and rhythm before chanting on your own makes the practice far more effective. Listen on Saturdays for maximum resonance.
🙏 Chant along every Saturday. For the prescribed 40-day practice, begin on a Saturday and do not miss a day.
Benefits of Chanting the Shani Chalisa
The Phalashruti states: 40 consecutive days of recitation carries one across the ocean of worldly existence. Specific benefits include:
The primary purpose — softens the 7.5-year Saturn transit, converting hardship into accelerated karmic growth and transformation.
Shani is the cosmic judge. Pleased devotees receive justice in legal, workplace and life situations where truth has been suppressed.
Saturn governs discipline and earned wealth. His blessings remove hidden karmic blocks to financial stability and create legitimate prosperity.
Saturn's energy builds extraordinary patience and strength through difficulty. Worship accelerates this fortification creating strength that lasts a lifetime.
Shani administers karma. His devotees receive accelerated karmic clearing — working through difficult patterns more quickly under his purifying influence.
Regular Saturday worship transforms Shani's energy from harsh disciplinarian to supportive guide — the devotee's greatest ally in navigating karma.
How to Chant — Step by Step
Saturday is Shani's sacred day
Before sunrise on Saturday is most powerful. Any Saturday morning works. Regular daily chanting throughout the week is also highly beneficial.
Wear black or dark blue clothing
These are Shani's colours. Wearing them during worship creates natural resonance with his energy.
Offer black sesame and a mustard oil lamp
Black sesame (kala til) and a mustard oil diya are Shani's traditional offerings. Pour water to the Peepal tree if one is accessible.
Face west — Shani's direction
Sit facing west while chanting — Shani Dev is associated with the western direction in Vedic tradition.
Chant all 40 chaupais + both dohas completely
Begin with the opening Doha, chant all 40 Chaupais in order, close with the Phalashruti Doha. Never stop midway through.
Practise for 40 consecutive days
The Phalashruti prescribes 40 days of unbroken daily recitation. Start on a Saturday. This is the most complete and transformative practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Shani Chalisa?
The Shani Chalisa is a 40-verse devotional hymn praising Lord Shani — the deity governing Saturn, the lord of karma and justice in Vedic tradition. It narrates legendary events where Saturn's influence shaped the fates of Lord Ram, King Vikramaditya, King Harishchandra, King Nala, the Pandavas and even Lord Shiva. Regular chanting mitigates Saturn's malefic effects and invites his justice and blessings.
What is Shani Sade Sati and how does this Chalisa help?
Shani Sade Sati is a 7.5-year period when Saturn transits the three zodiac signs around one's natal Moon sign. It brings significant challenges, delays and life transformations. Shani Chalisa chanting is the most prescribed traditional remedy — it doesn't eliminate karma but transforms the experience from raw suffering into accelerated growth and purification.
On which day should I chant the Shani Chalisa?
Saturday is most sacred for Shani worship. Chanting before sunrise on Saturday, offering black sesame and a mustard oil lamp, and pouring water at the Peepal tree are the traditional practices. The Chalisa can be chanted on any day with benefit, but Saturday is most powerful.
How many times should I chant the Shani Chalisa?
Once daily is deeply beneficial. The Phalashruti specifically prescribes 40 consecutive days — ideally starting on a Saturday. For specific Saturn difficulties, 5 or 11 readings on Saturdays are recommended. The unbroken 40-day practice is the most complete and transformative.
Is Shani Dev harmful?
No. Shani is the supreme cosmic judge who administers karma with perfect precision. He rewards righteousness, hard work, humility and honesty, and delivers the natural results of unrighteous action to those who harm others. He is not a deity of arbitrary punishment but of perfect justice. His sincere devotees find him their greatest protector through life's most difficult passages.
Why is the King Vikramaditya story in the Shani Chalisa?
King Vikramaditya was the greatest king of his era — renowned for justice, wisdom and power. Yet even he was brought to the lowest point by Saturn's transit: accused of theft, imprisoned, mutilated and made to work an oil press. His story demonstrates that no one — regardless of greatness — is exempt from Saturn's administration of karma. The story also shows that sincere devotion (his prayer with a lamp) ultimately restored everything. This is the most important lesson of Shani worship.
